Giro d'Italia - Stage 9
SportingNonsense
The first mountain stage is followed by a foray into the hills. Talansky is the strongest of the GC contenders, with 77 Hill, but then Morton, Velits, Monsalve, Nibali, Brambilla, Olivier and Formolo all do have 76 Hill. It's potentially an area to strike back in Alarcon, but with so many evenly matched riders, it could play out in a number of ways.

There are a few puncheurs to watch out for too, in Siskevicius, Prevar and Barbin - if they are given a chance to ride for it. Indeed, the Lithuanian was rated as a 3 star favourite for the day: alongside Monsalve and Formolo.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hermans got himself into the breakaway, alongside two weaker climbers: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Schädlich and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Neilands. He had no trouble then in winning the first two climbs of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-2.jpg

On the first climb, a Cat 2, both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Rosskopf and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Marzuki renewed their aggressive racing to pick up some minor points. They returned to the peloton, but later set off on separate mid-stage attacks, crossing the gap to the breakaway.

This gives Strava a numeric advantage, which is even more apparent into the final 50km, when the other two were finally dropped for good.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-3.jpg

Despite taking over the race lead, and leading the teams classification, Hugo Boss have not had much need to do work today. Instead, there is ambition being shown from Jayco, Ayubowan, Podium Ambition and Pendleton's. This bodes well for later in the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-4.jpg

But when Hugo Boss do stretch their legs, with 35km to go, immediately we see a split!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Benito split it, with the likes of Alarcon, Morton, Henao Montoya, Nibali, Talansky, Monsalve, Yates, Ewan and Kolesnikov making the cut.

But Wiesenhof and Moser quickly surge forward to prevent the gap from lasting.

A few kilometres later, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Siskevicius plays his cards.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-6.jpg

It's a popular attack, with Novikov, Nesset, Konrad, Ivanov, Lovkvist, Kirsch, Ignatenko, Carthy, Kolesnikov, Prevar, Aru and Koep all looking to follow.

It just isn't so well timed, just before a descent. And with the long line of attackers, no gap forms - and it only ends up being a brief sign of intent.

That was all until 13km to go, at the start of the tough 8km climb of Colle Molella. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Rosskopf and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Marzuki have left Hermans behind, and lead by 1'30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-7.jpg

The gaps hovers at that mark for more than half the climb, with no team looking to drive the pace too hard now. Instead, it is up to the leaders to pay back their team's faith. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky attacks, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve follows.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Bongiorno is on to it, matching an early move again, and now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton too - but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon is paying close attention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-9.jpg

The breakaway is caught, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky presses on to reach the top first. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton is with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-10.jpg

Alarcon follows in 3rd, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve following. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Nibali has attacked too, and is alongside pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Bongiorno. Then it's the breakaway, and then it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky keeps on leading, as Morton tucks in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon with the chase, Monsalve making up the second pair. Nibali and Bongiorno being the third pairing on the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits catches up with them - while Alarcon has made the junction up front, for a lead group of 4. Behind these 7 are a group of 14. Vosekalns and Reis are the best placed riders missing from that group, and the pure puncheurs are missing out too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-14.jpg

Into the sprint from the stage, and the best place to be is the back. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve takes advantage, jumps, and seems to catch them all out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-15.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-16.jpg

And yes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yonathan Monsalve wins the stage! Perfectly timed move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky takes a well earnt second, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton got mugged the most - beaten by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon for 3rd, and the always helpful time bonuses.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits takes 5th, beating Nibali and Bongiorno - but losing 31 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-18.jpg

The next group aren't far behind, close enough to also be given that deficit of 31. Ferrero show their power again, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Kolesnikov and Henao Montoya winning that sprint, ahead of Formolo, Olivier, Brambilla and Galta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi9-19.jpg

Marzuki trailed across the line at 1'14, followed a little later by companion Rosskopf, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis ensured that the next group were close enough too, to limit his losses.

The Portugese rider slips 6 places to 17th, while Vosekalns is down 2 to 7th. Positions wise, Talansky gains the most: up 4 to 11th, while Monsalve is up 3 to 5th. Alarcon extends his lead on Morton by the time bonus of 8 seconds, but the Australian is now more comfortable in 2nd at least.

No change in Points or KoM leader, although Alarcon and co continue to close the gaps. Morton of course remains the U25 lead. Ferrero the top team today, gaining 4 and a half minute on Hugo Boss - who were only the 15th best. They keep their lead though, despite nearly 4 minute losses to closest rivals Spotify and Gazelle.
