We're into the mountains on Stage 8, and a day that will be a key indicator on just who is going to win this race. There's the long climb of Cippo di Carpegna first, before another climb to follow, the summit finish at Montecopiolo.
Time trials have spread the field of favourites going into this stage, but almost all of the best mountain climbers in the race are within 2 minutes of each other still. At the top Morton and Velits have gathered a minute's advantage on Alarcon, and will be keen to hold on to that. They'll both have eyes on taking the maglia rosa today. Vosekalns can certainly climb, but it will take something for him to defend his narrow lead.
# Rider GC MO 25 Alarcon+ 1'22 84 3 Morton+ 9 83 9 Velits+ 25 83 20 Cattaneo+ 1'01 82 39 Henao Montoya+ 1'44 82 10 Abal+ 32 81 12 Nibali+ 39 81 19 Galta+ 59 81 36 Monsalve+ 1'40 81 6 Reis+ 19 80 18 Carapaz+ 51 80 26 Bongiorno+ 1'23 79 33 Talansky+ 1'37 79 40 König+ 1'44 79 41 Brambilla+ 1'44 79 64 Olivier+ 3'09 79 1 Vosekalns22h23'46 78
9 riders made their way into the breakaway:
Gerts
Gougeard
Zubov
Van Baarle
Rosskopf
Schädlich
Jungels
Rajapakshage
Marzuki
Gougeard has slipped to 8th in the Points classification now, but picks up 4 more points at the sprint. More by chance though, as Marzuki was the only one to sprint for it.
And Marzuki, along with Rosskopf, emerges as the strongest of the breakaway as the big climbing gets underway. 2nd in the KoM competition, the Malaysian will hope to close the gap.
Jayco's timetriallists controlled the pace for the flatter part of the day, but they don't have the strength to do so on the climbs. Benito for Hugo Boss and Stybar for Moser took some turns, but with 7km still to climb Alarcon lets loose!
The response isn't much. No counter attacks, and it is wildcards Ferrero - Samruk who come forwards. It is Kolesnikov with an aggressive riding style, leading his team leader Henao Montoya.
When Alarcon attacked, Marzuki and Rosskopf were 4 minutes ahead. Now he has joined them!
At 2'30 are Kolesnikov and Henao - the Ferrero pair having ridden clear of the peloton. They are at 3'20, with Dyball doing what he can - supported by Kennaugh and Ludvigsson.
Alarcon reaches the summit first, really looking to put his stamp down on the race.
Rosskopf is 2nd, over 2 minutes behind, while Henao Montoya is 3 minutes behind, passing Marzuki for 3rd.
There's finally been a response from the other contenders, with Morton 5th over the summit, 4 minutes behind his big rival. Bongiorno and Vosekalns are with him, with Monsalve coming across past Kolesnikov. Cattaneo and Velits have attacked to, and are at 4'30, with the rest still in the peloton - 5 minutes behind Alarcon,
Going down the descent, Alarcon's lead does decrease a little. Henao Montoya bridging to Rosskopf at 2 minutes. Morton has company, but does all the work in cutting the gap to 3 minutes. Abal and Nibali joined the other attackers - with them all trying their best to stick with the Italian on the downhill roads.
10km to the summit now for Alarcon.
Henao Montoya immediately attacks the slope, dropping Rosskopf, and looking to close the gap.
No such aggression from Morton, or his followers Bongiorno, and Vosekalns. Instead, first the Nibali, Velits, Cattaneo, Abal and Monsalve group catch up - and then comes the new wave of attackers from the peloton. Olivier, Talansky, König, Brambilla, Vasyliv and Formolo.
Now Morton does attack!
Behind the Australian, the strongest end up being Monsalve, Olivier, Cattaneo, Abal and Bongiorno. Formolo leads the next group, with Velits, Talansky and Nibali. Race leader Vosekalns has fallen back.
Alarcon continues to lead, his gap reducing a little, but still at 1'40 over Henao and 2'30 on Morton.
A very strong ride from Formolo sees the Gazelle rider ride up to the lead chasing group - gratefully followed Velits, as they edge in front of Bongiorno - another Italian going well.
Olivier has the most time to make up and he now attacks this group. In the background, it seems Velits may be struggling again!
Jose Alarcon wins the stage for Hugo Boss! He is the only contender in the race to have won a Grand Tour before, and that experience seems to be showing. How much will he have gained today?
Henao Montoya highlighted the value of a strong teammate - something many other contenders are lacking - in the launch pad that got him clear. He takes 2nd place, fading a little in the closing stages - a gap of 1'57.
Olivier joined Morton but the pair struggled over the final kilometre. Morton will take 3rd, but is 3 minutes behind Alarcon. A flying Formolo regains contact on the line to pip Olivier for 4th, with Abal in 6th.
A small gap then, with Monsalve and Cattaneo at 3'16.
Having slipped back earlier in the climb, Vosekalns surges back in the closing stages to end his race lead spell with a flourish - and only lose 3'38.
But Velits struggled in the closing stages, falling back with Bongiorno to Nibali - who had struggled earlier on the mountain. They finish behind Brambilla, in with Aru, Talansky, Konig and Scarponi at over 4 minutes behind.
It was worse for some of the other contenders. Clearly a bad day for Galta and Reis, losing 5 and a half minutes. Sosnitskiy is in this group too, along with Alarcon's teammates Ablenado and Carapaz - who weren't needed at all today.
So Alarcon is straight into the Maglia Rosa - with Jayco holding firm on that 2nd position in GC. Morton now trails the Venezuelan by 2 minutes, with Henao Montoya at 2'27, Abal at 2'31 and Vosekalns now in 5th at 2'36. Velits cuts a disappointing 7th - while Galta is now the lowest placed of the riders listed at the top of the stage, in 20th place.
Alarcon moves up to 2nd in the KoM, 19 points off Potts, and Hugo Boss are far and away the strongest team. Spotify and Gazelle the next best, but nearly 5 minutes behind. Morton takes the U25 lead, Groenewegen remains the Points leader.
