Giro d'Italia - Stage 7
SportingNonsense
Stage 7 is the most sprinter friendly of the race, and with the mountains on the horizon, this is an opportunity they surely have to take. We've had 3 sprint finishes so far, with only 2 sprint victories. Many sprinters had high hopes for this opening week, and this is their last chance to deliver for some time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-1.jpg

Let's remind ourselves how the sprinters have performed in the race to date:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Van Poppel122240
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Modolo333513

Across all three stages, consistency has not been easy to achieve - with some of course hindered by the crash on Stage 3. Ciolek, Van der Lijke and Petit have managed it - but haven't broken in to the Top 5. Howard's early moves have brought him two podiums and the points jersey, while Grosu has had two good stages - with Van Poppel shining for eBuddy on the other. Guarnieri and particularly Groenewegen have struggled to back it up from Stage 2, while Coquard will be hoping to build from his much improved Stage 6.

There's an initial break of 6, of course featuring Marc Potts.

But they are quickly chased down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-2.jpg

Orlov attacks again, and the Nemiroff rider takes the top of the first KoM of the day solo. On the descent, two others join him, making this today's breakaway:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-3.jpg

There's a crash mid-stage! As ever, it features some of the climbers who would have rather hoped for an incident free day today. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Carapaz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kirsch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-4.jpg

Also affected are Feillu, Craddock, Gretsch, De Luna, Johansson, De Gendt and Potts. The last two were the slowest to get going again, and unable to hitch a ride with the rest of them as they made their way back to the peloton. They will finish a long way down - a potential blow to Potts' hopes of keeping the KoM jersey for as long as he can.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Rosskopf took the points at the 2nd climb of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-5.jpg

Porto - Prio and Puma - SAP are taking responsibility for chasing down the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-6.jpg

RBC's American would be the last to be caught, now with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Sotify - Haglofs being the sole pace setting team. It is in fact their GC leader Abal who leads the field at 7.5km to go, with the breakaway over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-7.jpg

Abal was also then the last 'domestique' to pull away with 3km to go, with Spotify converting chasing into leadout, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Lövkvist and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Kvist for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand - with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Avelino following the Swede.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-8.jpg

eBuddy have the more popular train, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Van Poppel has come to the front with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu in tow. Lining up behind are:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Roelandts
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Van der Lijke
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Petit
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger

And until Kvist started sprinting, Van Poppel was pulling away from the Spotify train.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard continues to buck convention, alone and sprinting from a long way out already. And again it fires him right into the lead, into the final kilometre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-9.jpg

It's not going to work today though, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek lead the charge from behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri tried to go around the right of Howard, but found himself boxed and stuck behind the Aussie, while Groenewegen, Coquard and Ahlstrand are finding more success in the middle, with Van der Lijke and Ewan on the other side of the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu looks good, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek are storming through with an extra kick towards the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dylan Groenewegen takes it! A second stage win for him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek is 2nd, his best of the race, with Grosu 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-13.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi7-14.jpg

It is 4th for Coquard, ahead of Vesely, Ahlstrand, Zabel and Van der Lijke. Avelino and Ewan close out the Top 10, with Howard falling back to 14th - and taking Guarnieri down to 15th with him.

With two sets of 25 points for stage wins, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen moves into the points jersey lead. But with a win or bust record, his grand total is just 51. This means his lead is only minimal, with both Howard and Grosu on 49, then Ciolek on 47, Coquard on 44 and Vesely on 42. It's quite likely then that the Points jersey will be on the back of a GC rider by the end of the race.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Vosekalns defends his lead for another day, but now it's time for the mountains to begin.
