Giro d'Italia - Stage 5
SportingNonsense
Stage 5 is where the Giro starts to hit the uphill roads, with 8 categorised climbs along the way. No chance of recovery then, after yesterday's Team Time Trial.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-1.jpg

Jersey wearers start the stage at the front of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard leads in Points and KoM, and wears the red points jersey. This means that initial KoM leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Potts is in the Blue KoM jersey. They take advantage of their privileged positions to immediately attack. This is a day ripe for KoM points after all!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-2.jpg

They lead by 2 minutes before anyone else responds, with the first climb already underway. The next attackers are:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Bolivar
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Villella
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Kochetkov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Marzuki
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Declerq

Potts wins the first climb to close the gap, and with the exception of Kochetkov, the other attackers do catch up, for a 6 man breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-3.jpg

Onto the 2nd climb, when the attacks for points go, Declerq and Villela don't follow - falling back to the pack. Potts again wins the climb, with Gougeard only 3rd. This takes the Irishman to 26 points, and into a provisional lead - the Frenchman has only moved on to 23.

And the peloton has been torn apart!

66 remain in the front group.

The next group features some big names: Velits, Aru, Lovkvist, Ignatenko, Vasyliv, Brambilla, Abal, Bongiorno, Monsalve, Reis and Konig included amongst the 62 here.

A group further back includes many sprinters, and Siskevicius seems to be the strongest climber in there - hardly utilising his hill strengths.

The peloton aren't hanging around - and swallow up the entire break. Group Velits and co trails by 4 minutes!! There is a chase, of many teams, and they'll need to work hard now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-4.jpg

Maglia rosa pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Fiedler had made the split at the front, but now is getting dropped too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-5.jpg

There's no way that this pace can be maintained for the entire race though, and it all comes back together.

Three of the earlier attackers return to the front:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Potts
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Marzuki
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard

Again Gougeard struggles though, as Potts extends his lead on the next climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-6.jpg

They do not regroup, and Potts stays alone, with Marzuki in a futile chase, and Gougeard dropping back to the peloton. Potts takes the next 3 climbs.

He is caught at the foot of the long penultimate climb. It is category 2, we have 32km to go, and the opportunity is there now for the top riders to go on the attack. Hugo Boss lead the pace setting.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-7.jpg

A splinter group forms! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton leads the way, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Cattaneo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Benito was on the front causing the split, and now drops back to wait for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon. Who doesn't waste much time in catching up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-9.jpg

At this point the group is down to 38, but nobody takes on the pace, and it swells again. No further attacks all climb, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Dyball leading the race over the top - followed by Ablenado, Vesely, Morton and Egger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-10.jpg

There's a false flat over the top, before the descent, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Vosekalns attacks. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Heider and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Brown try to follow, as they head downhill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-11.jpg

Only Vosekalns gets a gap, and onto the final climb there isn't much of a chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-12.jpg

He crosses the summit with a 2'30 lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Nibali finally launches a move in the final kilometre of the climb. Velits and Cattaneo follow, but all three are swept up on the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-14.jpg

Evonik only beat Strava in the TTT, so Andris Vosekalns started the day 2'40 down on GC. That is going to close for sure, as he completes the final descent to win the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-15.jpg

The peloton is short on organisation, butpcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Van der Lijke has survived the climbs and is towards the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-16.jpg

But he doesn't sprint! Instead, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Kolesnikov takes a leadout from Henao to finish 2nd on the stage, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Formolo 3rd and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi5-17.jpg

Some consolation for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vesuvio is that some of their other well placed riders did sprint. Paterski, Konig and Kirsch taking 5th, 6th and 8th.

80 riders in the peloton, but Fiedler is not amongst them - finishing in a group 9 minutes behind. He won't be keeping the race lead.

Vosekalns gap at the finish was 2'12, and with the time bonus added, this is enough for him to move into the maglia rosa! Jayco miss out again, with Canty 2nd at just 8 seconds, and Morton 3rd at 9. This also means that Vosekalns takes the U25 jersey from Canty.

No points for Gougeard today but he keeps his lead there. He is down to joint 2nd with Marzuki in the KoM though, on 25 points - with Potts now leading the way on 48.
