KBC De Panne Stage 3

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%201.jpg

This stage on paper looks to strongly favour the sprinters and is likely to end in a bunch sprint. The peloton have failed to chase down the break in both stages so far. It remains to be seen if the teams of sprinters can take the initiative here. The weather report indicates another extremely windy day awaits the riders, but it is expected to stay clear.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris's Jersey should be in less danger than the last stage but the team need to be careful about possible echelons, especially given the weather conditions. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Ramon Domene's grip on the the Points classification could be loosened or even broken if the favourites have their way.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden start as top favourites for this stage. The high winds might shift the onus towards those with a high flat stat and better acceleration. If this turns out to be true, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Rowe and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Van Asbroeck might be the ones who take advantage.

The racing is underway. Weather conditions are still quite calm, with the breeze holding to around 20 km/hr.

The day's break is formed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Kuulpi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Benoot. None of them are any danger to the GC.

They pass the first intermediate sprint in the order mentioned above.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%202.jpg

The peloton get themselves somewhat organized and start pulling the gap down. It is now 4'19" having gone above 5 minutes for a few kilometers. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Eritel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Lierse and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Goldcorp doing the chasing. 70 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%203.jpg

35 km to go, and the break now has 2'33" lead. Wind speeds, as predicted, have picked up to 60 km/hr!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%204.jpg

20 km left and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Grieg has joined the chase in the peloton. 30 riders have been dropped but there are no big names there.

The break are now visible to the peloton. The deficit is down to 1'16".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%205.jpg

11 more riders are dropped soon after. The highest placed in the GC is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Ostergaard, who was 4th after surviving from the break on Stage 1, and is currently 19th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%206.jpg

With 8 km left and the break have managed to extend their lead to 1'47" seconds over the peloton. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%207.jpg

5 km to go and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Kuulpi makes the transition. The peloton has started drifting back even further. I can't recall having seen such a passive peloton in a long long time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%208.jpg

With 5 km to go for the peloton, there is hardly any co-ordination as a number of teams try to take control.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%209.jpg

Up ahead, the breakaway are back together now have just 3 km to go. Their lead has shot back up to 2'52". pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Benoot looks tired after the latest effort.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2010.jpg

When the peloton reach the same point, their slowness allows the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Lierse sprint train of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Joseph - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Peeters - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Van Asbroeck to get a gap and ride away. The riders previously dropped have mostly made their way back to the pack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Kuulpi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes launch their sprints with 800 meters to go. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Benoot has nothing left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2012.jpg

It is clear that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes is much stronger with just 300 meters to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2013.jpg

And the Minions rider wins! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Kenny De Haes takes the plaudits in what is the third consecutive breakaway win of this race. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Kuulpi finishes on his wheel in 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Benoot drags himself past the line in 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2015.jpg

The peloton approaches the 1 km banner. The pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Lierse train has a significant gap up ahead, while seven more riders have gone off the front. They are:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Drapac
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Nepomnyachsniy
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Brus
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Castenada
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Vanderaerden
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Hopman
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Rowe

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2016.jpg

500 meters. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Van Asbroeck has launched his sprint and gone past pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Peeters. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Joseph has dropped off the train but still has a gap to the peloton. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Vanderaeden is back in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Van Asbroeck takes 4th ahead of teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Peeters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Joseph hangs on for 6th, to make it a bonanza of points for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Lierse. Behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Rowe leads pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Nepomnyachsniy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Brus and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Drapac. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Castaneda tries to stay in touch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Rowe hangs on to 7th with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Nepomnyachsniy 8th. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Drapac comes past pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Brus to take 9th. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Castaneda has to settle for 11th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Maksimov is 12th followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Hopman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Wisnowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Harrison rounds out the top 15. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Jans and GC leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris come in next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Kenny De Haes climbs to the top of the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS3%2023.jpg

Despite the odds, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris hangs on to his lead in the GC. Only the ITT remains and barring an absolute disaster, he should hold on for a sensational win. There is some change at the top of the Points standings as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Harrison moves slightly closer to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Domene, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes launches himself into 3rd place. There is no change in the U25 standings from Stage 2.
