Verona plays host to the Team Time Trial, and 30.5km for the time trial favoured teams to really press their advantage.
Here are the favourites for the day:
And a breakdown of those top 6 rated team's TT stats:
#1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 #7 #8 Jayco - Cobra9 81 79 79 77 77 75 73 73 Hugo Boss 80 78 77 74 73 72 72 66 Porto - Prio 83 80 78 77 76 70 64 57 Gazelle 77 76 74 73 72 71 69 64 Aegon - Lavazza 78 78 77 74 72 69 64 61 Spotify - Haglöfs 79 77 77 75 72 65 64 60
Clearly Jayco have the depth, and anything less than a win today would be a disappointment. Every rider can contribute to the performance. Hugo Boss are strong too, but their weak link is Alarcon, who they can't drop - so may need to wait for? Porto have the strongest time triallist, on paper at least, Fiedler.
With the teams classification having been set by Stage 1 - with only Iberia rising up, with Gougeard's victory yesterday, we can confidently say that the early teams are not going to feature in the battle for victory.
Here they all are:
Having been given a 2-star stage rating, it is no surprise to see that Gazelle top the standings after the first 14 teams.
1 Gazelle 37'02 2 Aker - MOT + 15 3 Festina - Dexia + 28 4 Wiesenhof-Andritz + 38 5 Podium Ambition + 40 6 RBC Pro Cycling + 42 7 Ferrero - Samruk + 43 8 eBuddy s.t. 9 Tinkoff Sport Academy + 45 10 Nemiroff - ABBYY + 50 11 Vesuvio - Accumalux + 52 12 Ayubowan! + 56 13 Evonik - ELKO + 1'27 14 Strava + 1'36
Of the leading GC riders to have finished (those with 80+ MO), Galta is best placed. 23 seconds gained on Cattaneo, whose team lacked the TT strength he showed on Stage 1. Henao Montoya and Monsalve with further losses.
But every team is also now through the first intermediate, and we can see that Gazelle only place 5th here.
Jayco - Cobra9 and Porto - Prio having started the strongest, and with a good gap on Hugo Boss and the other teams being quite bunched together.
Here are all of the remaining teams, out on course:
That 4 second lead for Jayco has turned by the second split, with Porto now leading by 1 second! Neither team has really pressed on their advantage. Spotify are now up to 3rd, and matched Porto over this section, holding on to a 22 second deficit. They are level with Aegon, with Moser and Puma within 2 seconds. Hugo Boss falling back a bit.
It's time for them to now finish their rides. King Lok Cheung leads in Pendleton's with Nibali and 2 National Champions, Pereyra and Downey, in their final 5. They take the lead, 5 seconds faster than Gazelle.
No lead for Puma - SAP, they go into 2nd place. Like Gazelle, finding themselves losing time to Pendleton's in the closing stages.
The lead does change soon though. Aegon - Lavazza cut 10 seconds from the fastest time, with Boom, Koep, Craddock, Frison and Dumoulin.
Good for the stage, but not so good for GC. Olivier has had a nightmare, still has a kilometre to go, and will finish 2'26 behind his team!
He barely makes it to the line before Spotify, as team leader Abal led the Swedes over the line. But they've faded from the 2nd split, and go 3rd, between Pendleton's and Puma.
Moser are next, and they've finished strongly to take 2nd, 3 seconds behind Aegon. Stage 1 star Danacik leads them on the line, with Velits in here. His 2 biggest rivals yet to finish.
Here come Porto - Prio to set the benchmark time then. 18 seconds faster than Aegon, with Oliveira leading them over the line rather than star rider Fiedler. Reis safely in their front 5.
All eyes on Jayco now, who have kept their squad together impressively well. No weak riders in here, and only in the final kilometre do Olman and Hepburn sit up, having put in big last turns. O'Shea will lead them over the line, with Morton 6th.
And they win the stage! They've battled back against Porto, and finish 2 seconds faster.
Hugo Boss haven't lived up to their 3-star status, and will only finish 8th. 35 seconds down. But Jose Alarcon ships an extra 20 seconds, being dropped at the end!
Alexis Gougeard needed his team to help him finish no more than 50 seconds behind, to guarantee he keep the Maglia Rosa.
But his spell in pink will only last one day, as they finish 21st of the 23 teams, losing 1'37.
Hepburn was the best placed Jayco rider, but dropped off in the closing stages, so their next best is Porte. However, he was more than 2 seconds behind Fiedler on Stage 1 - so Porto's German rider will take the race lead. 5 Jayco riders in the Top 6, all 8 in the Top 12.
Morton lost 2 seconds to his team, with only the first 5 credited on the same time. Still, he is 6th overall at 17 seconds and the leading GC rider. Not quite the U25 leader though, as that is teammate Canty. (Who started the day 1 second behind Morton!)
Reis is 9th at 27 seconds, with Velits and Abal in the Top 20 at 33 and 40 seconds respectively. Nibali at 47, Galta 1'07, Cattaneo 1'09, Alarcon 1'30, Monsalve at 1'48, with Henao Montoya, Brambilla and Konig all at 1'52. Olivier is at 3'17.
