Giro d'Italia - Stage 3
SportingNonsense
Stage 3 to Novi Ligure is another one for the sprinters. A Top 3 finish would be enough for either Guarnieri or Groenewegen to take the Maglia Rosa. All of the other sprinters will be hoping to get into the Top 2 in their place though, as there are not a lot of opportunities for them in this race.

A breakaway of three quickly formed:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.pngAlexis GougeardIberia - Team Degenkolb
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.pngPim LigthartHugo Boss
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.pngMikhail KochetkovNemiroff - ABBYY

Ligthart shone in the opening time trial, but got himself dropped on Stage 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-2.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard only managed to pick up 2 KoM points in the breakaway yesterday, despite being the strongest climber. Today there is an even bigger gap in climbing skill between him, and the rest of the breakaway, and he has no problem winning both climbs. Thus, he will move into the lead of the competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-3.jpg

Kochetkov and Ligthart shared 2nd places, to go joint 3rd overall.

Once again Puma, Spotify and Strava lead the peloton - the faith is being kept in Ciolek and Ahlstrand, along with Guarnieri.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-4.jpg

The gap was down to a minute with 20km to go, as Gougeard attacks the breakaway and goes solo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-5.jpg

There's suddenly a lull in the peloton, and the gap jumps out to 2 minutes. Finally pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Lövkvist recognises the danger, and starts driving the gap down to 1'30 approaching the final 10 kilometres.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-6.jpg

Huge crash in the peloton!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-7.jpg

Identified are the following, but there may have been a couple more:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Te Brake
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Formolo
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png De Luna
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png O'Shea
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Zhupa
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Roelandts
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Silva
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Avelino
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Kragh Andersen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Fonseca
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger

There seems to be two simultaneous incidents. On one side it is Zhupa and Olivier, and the other side it is O'Shea, Morton and Groenewegen. GC riders mixing with the sprinters then, with Morton, Olivier, Reis and Konig the Top GC riders involved, with a number of sprinters from Groenewegen, Avelino, Coquard, Ewan and Roelandts to lead out men Fonseca and Kragh Anderson. Particularly bad for Aegon, Porto and Jayco then - surely not another Italian disaster for Morton?

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Bol tried to keep the peloton going, reducing the gap to 1'15, but without finding much support - the crash having disrupted an already badly organised peloton.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard leads by 1'30, gap going up, with just 3km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hermans is up alongside Bol, while the foremost lead-out as such is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Bonnin for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Cattaneo are also well placed.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek leads the other sprinters a little further back, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri nearby - but nobody to properly lead them out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-9.jpg

Eventually pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Van Poppel decides to go off on a long sprint, and catch out everybody else.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-10.jpg

The stage win is long gone though. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Alexis Gougeard has benefited in part from circumstance, but may have been difficult to catch regardless. He takes the clean sweep, winning the stage, gaining the Maglia Rosa, and also leading the Points, KoM and U25 classifications!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-11.jpg

Chasing after Van Poppel are teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu, as well as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-12.jpg

Other sprinters are not too far behind, but it is enough for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Van Poppel to cling on to 2nd place, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard finish closely behind in 3rd.

It's then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand in 4th from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi3-13.jpg

No time losses for the crashes, except for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen, who caught the tail end of the crash and was already suspected to be struggling with an injury from the previous stage. There'll be some bruised bodies going into the TTT though, if nothing worse.
