KBC De Panne Stage 2

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%201.jpg

This stage has five cobbled sections, each on a uphill section of the course. This will pose a different kind of challenge compared to the last stage. However, the top cobblers still remain favourites for the win on this stage. Any sprinter who is able to hang on to the front through the hills and cobbles can hope of winning the stage in a sprint. To add to the terrain, the winds are now pushing past 40 km/hr.

Overnight leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris and his teammates will have quite a job on their hands protecting the Leader's Jersey. Their top contender in the cobbles, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Van Keirsbulck lost more than 15 minutes on Stage 1, so the team's sole purpose will be to safeguard pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris's position. Among the pre-race favourites, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Altur has put himself into the best position to push for a GC win, if he can distance pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris here. The likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Harrison, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Vanbilsen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Thomas, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Matthews, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Giaux, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Wisnowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Debesay and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Burghardt will consider themselves still in with a shot at the overall crown. It would take something special for anyone outside of the names mentioned to put themselves back in contention for the top spot.

After a couple of failed attempts from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Van der Poel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Navadianto and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png De Vreese, the day's break is formed by four riders:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Van Der Poel
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Jans
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Domene
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Kossouhorou

Among them, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Domene is really strong in the cobbles, and once again, the peloton will want to keep a tab on the break because of this reason.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%202.jpg

Past the first intermediate sprint, it pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Kossouhorou taking maximum points ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Jans and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Domene. Their lead is 6 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%203.jpg

90 km to go and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Goldcorp are doing the leg-work. The gap is down to 5'13".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%204.jpg

There is a crash involving six riders a couple of kilometers later. They are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Joseph, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Zaraliev, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Jallays, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Lindgren, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Drapac. They manage to make it back to the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%205.jpg

70 km left. Riders have started getting dropped as the peloton goes past the first cobbled section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%206.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Carlsberg are leading the peloton at the 60 km mark. They must believe their leaders can get time back on the day. Conversely, they have pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Ostergaard in 4th place and would like to hold on to that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%207.jpg

They pick up the pace and manage to split the peloton almost exactly in half. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Nepomnyachsniy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden are caught on the wrong side of the split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%208.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Kossouhorou is dropped from the break. 53 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%209.jpg

Just 23 riders left in the peloton as we approach the penultimate cobbled section. They are 2'52" behind the three man break at the moment, and 56" behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Kossouhorou.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Nolf, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Giaux, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Peeters, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Breschel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Lindeman are among riders recently dropped by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Puccio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kamyshev have been dropped! Also in this group are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Grashev, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Kuulpi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Albert and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Lindeman. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Kossouhorou has been caught by the peloton. 38 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Domene wins the second intermediate sprint by rolling over the line ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Jans and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Van der Poel. Their lead is 2'44".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2013.jpg

16 km. And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Jans is dropped! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Van der Poel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Domene already have 40 seconds to the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Isostar rider. Their lead to the peloton has increased to 3'8".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Vanbilsen attacks from the pack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kamyshev and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Kuulpi had made their way back to the peloton but are now dropped again. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Farrar is also dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2016.jpg

10 km to go. The situation on the road is as follows:
E1 -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Domene, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Van der Poel
E2 (1'5" ) -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Jans
E3 (1'53" ) -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Vanbilsen
Peloton (2'19" ) -> 19 riders

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Ostergaard has been dropped!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2017.jpg

8 km. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Vanbilsen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Jans are caught by the peloton. The break is at 1'4". Will they be caught?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2018.jpg

Nothing happens in the peloton over the next 5 km or so. The break's lead has gone up to 1'44". Only 2.5 km left. It looks like they will survive again. Did the peloton give up?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2019.jpg

600 meters. The breakaway riders start their sprint to the line. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Domene leads out pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Van der Poel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Domene looks to be in control with 300 meters left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2021.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Domene it is! The pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Newton Foundation rider is today's winner! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Van der Poel takes 2nd behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2022.jpg

The peloton is going past the 1 km banner. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Vanbilsen attackes again. There is more apathy from the peloton as no one looks to counter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Vanbilsen takes an easy 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Harrison wins the sprint for 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Burghardt outsprints pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Nepomnyachsniy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Van Asbroeck for 5th. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Thomas and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Matthews round out the top 10 for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Podium Ambition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris comes home safely in 20th, losing no time to his rivals. He keeps the jersey for another day. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Okbamariam is also in this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS2%2027.jpg

Today's winner - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Ramon Domene. He also leads the Points Jersey classification after today.
