The hardest stage of the race comes up first. The favourites will be looking to make their presence felt. For those who aren't the best on the cobbles, their motive for the day will be survival and to limit time losses.
Name COB STA Kamyshev 82 81 Burghardt 82 77 Vanbilsen 80 80 Nolf 80 77 Daniel 80 76 Altur 80 75 Wisniowski 79 75 Thomas 79 75 Polanc 78 78 Van Keirsbulck 78 75
The weather is warm and sunny but also quite windy. Wonder if that'll play a part later!
The break of the day consists of three riders - Okbamariam, Lebris and Ostergaard. This is a strange decision by the peloton to let them ride away as all three are quite strong on the cobbles. The peloton will need to be vigilant.
The break is at 5'36" after the first cobbled section.
Riders have already been dropped here but they make it back to the peloton in the non-cobbled section.
Ostergaard wins the first intermediate sprint ahead of Okbamariam and Lebris.
We get a report that Afewerki has to retire already. No crash was picked up by our cameras so there must be some other problem for him. Eritel lose their support to Van Heerden.
The peloton is down to 96 riders, trailing the break at 6'16". Castaneda and Peeters are two big names not in the peloton.
Nolf is surprsingly dropped next. Still 88 km left.
70 km left. Breschel is also dropped. The whole Carlsberg team drops back to pace their cobbles leader back to the peloton.
But they're unsuccessful as the peloton picks up the pace in the following kilometers. Farrar doing a lot of work at the front. This is somewhat of a surprise as Goldcorp have a rider in the break. Probably a sign that Van Keirsbulck is feeling really good today.
The high tempo sheds more riders and the peloton reduces in size to just 36 riders at the 63 km to go mark. The latest riders dropped include Lindeman and Farrar, the latter's job done for the day.
Our cameras miss the riders as they go past the second intermediate sprint. This time Okbamariam takes first place ahead of Ostergaard with Lebris third again.
With 30 km to go, the break's lead is down to 2'30". Laengen and Verhelst have been dropped by the peloton. Grand is even further back on the road.
Rowe is the next to be dropped.
And then Van Heerden. The peloton is now 26 strong while the break still has a lead slightly more than two minutes. 25 kilometers to go.
With 20 km left, Wisnowski takes a tumble. It's all going wrong for Greig! Fortunately for them, he recovers to get back to the peloton.
12 km. Lebris drops the others in the break and extends the gap to 3 minutes to the peloton.
Altur attacks and goes solo in search of the break. The speed of the peloton is obviously too slow for him.
Vanbilsen is the next one out of the peloton at the 9 km mark. Behind him, the peloton has split up into fragments.
Up ahead, Lebris has just 6 km left now. Can he make it? The race situation is as follows:
E1 -> Lebris
E2 (1'8" ) -> Okbamariam, Ostergaard
E3 (2'44" ) -> Altur
E4 (3'15" ) -> Vanbilsen
E5 (3'26" ) -> Thomas, Burghardt, Wisnowski, Harrison, Debesay, Matthews, Giaux
E6 -> Hristov, Vanthourenhout, Polanc, Joseph, Nepomnyachsniy, Daniel, Kamyshev, Grashev, Oba
E7 -> Zaraliev, Tsatevich, Wyss, Van Asbroeck
(E5)
(E6)
(E7)
2 km left for Lebris now. He has 1'26" to the next group...
...where Altur has caught up to Okbamariam and Ostergaard.
Behind them, Harrison has attacked out of the group and caught up to Vanbilsen. They're 2'12" behind Lebris.
Thomas is alone behind them at 2'28". The next group has Burghardt, Wisnowski, Debesay, Matthews and Giaux, around three minutes behind Lebris. E6 is the same as it was with 6 km left. Their deficit is four minutes!
Lebris wins! He raises his arms in glory after a superb rider from the day's break. Goldcorp have pulled off a massive upset here.
Altur drops the other two breakaway riders in closing stages to take 2nd. This effort puts him in pole position among the race favourites.
Harrison has made up a lot of ground in the final kilometers and comes home in 3rd. He is followed to the line by Okbamariam and Vanbilsen.
Ostergaard is 6th.
Thomas finishes 7th, ahead of teammate Matthews. Giaux and Wisnowski complete the top 10, with Debesay 11th and Burghardt 12th.
Today's winner and overnight GC leader is Cedric Lebris.
A total of 18 riders missed the time-limit!
