KBC De Panne Stage 1

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%201.jpg

The hardest stage of the race comes up first. The favourites will be looking to make their presence felt. For those who aren't the best on the cobbles, their motive for the day will be survival and to limit time losses.

The weather is warm and sunny but also quite windy. Wonder if that'll play a part later!

The break of the day consists of three riders - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Okbamariam, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Ostergaard. This is a strange decision by the peloton to let them ride away as all three are quite strong on the cobbles. The peloton will need to be vigilant.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%202.jpg

The break is at 5'36" after the first cobbled section.

Riders have already been dropped here but they make it back to the peloton in the non-cobbled section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%203.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Ostergaard wins the first intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Okbamariam and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%204.jpg

We get a report that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Afewerki has to retire already. No crash was picked up by our cameras so there must be some other problem for him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Eritel lose their support to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%205.jpg

The peloton is down to 96 riders, trailing the break at 6'16". pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Castaneda and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Peeters are two big names not in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%206.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Nolf is surprsingly dropped next. Still 88 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%207.jpg

70 km left. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Breschel is also dropped. The whole pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Carlsberg team drops back to pace their cobbles leader back to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%208.jpg

But they're unsuccessful as the peloton picks up the pace in the following kilometers. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Farrar doing a lot of work at the front. This is somewhat of a surprise as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Goldcorp have a rider in the break. Probably a sign that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Van Keirsbulck is feeling really good today.

The high tempo sheds more riders and the peloton reduces in size to just 36 riders at the 63 km to go mark. The latest riders dropped include pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Lindeman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Farrar, the latter's job done for the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2011.jpg

Our cameras miss the riders as they go past the second intermediate sprint. This time pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Okbamariam takes first place ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Ostergaard with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris third again.

With 30 km to go, the break's lead is down to 2'30". pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Laengen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Verhelst have been dropped by the peloton. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Grand is even further back on the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Rowe is the next to be dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2013.jpg

And then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden. The peloton is now 26 strong while the break still has a lead slightly more than two minutes. 25 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2014.jpg

With 20 km left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Wisnowski takes a tumble. It's all going wrong for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Greig! Fortunately for them, he recovers to get back to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2015.jpg

12 km. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris drops the others in the break and extends the gap to 3 minutes to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Altur attacks and goes solo in search of the break. The speed of the peloton is obviously too slow for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Vanbilsen is the next one out of the peloton at the 9 km mark. Behind him, the peloton has split up into fragments.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2018.jpg

Up ahead, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris has just 6 km left now. Can he make it? The race situation is as follows:

E1 -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris
E2 (1'8" ) -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Okbamariam, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Ostergaard
E3 (2'44" ) -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Altur
E4 (3'15" ) -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Vanbilsen
E5 (3'26" ) -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Thomas, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Burghardt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Wisnowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Harrison, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Debesay, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Matthews, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Giaux

2 km left for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris now. He has 1'26" to the next group...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2022.jpg

...where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Altur has caught up to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Okbamariam and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Ostergaard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2023.jpg

Behind them, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Harrison has attacked out of the group and caught up to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Vanbilsen. They're 2'12" behind Lebris.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Thomas is alone behind them at 2'28". The next group has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Burghardt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Wisnowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Debesay, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Matthews and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Giaux, around three minutes behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris. E6 is the same as it was with 6 km left. Their deficit is four minutes!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Lebris wins! He raises his arms in glory after a superb rider from the day's break. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Goldcorp have pulled off a massive upset here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2029.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Altur drops the other two breakaway riders in closing stages to take 2nd. This effort puts him in pole position among the race favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Harrison has made up a lot of ground in the final kilometers and comes home in 3rd. He is followed to the line by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Okbamariam and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Vanbilsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Ostergaard is 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Thomas finishes 7th, ahead of teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Matthews. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Giaux and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Wisnowski complete the top 10, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Debesay 11th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Burghardt 12th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/De%20Panne/DPS1%2028.jpg

Today's winner and overnight GC leader is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Cedric Lebris.
