A historic start to the Giro d'Italia this year, as Stage 1 consists of a prologue in the centre of Rome.
From the Fori Imperiali to the Vatican City, and a finish line in front of St Peter's Basilica.
The 7th rider to finish sets an early benchmark. Ligthart completes the course in 7'07.
Other early rides come in from one of the race favourites Velits, Puma duo Van Baarle and Sütterlin, as well as Oz' first time triallist Porte. Sütterlin disappoints to only go 4th, 9 seconds down - slower than his teammate Van Baarle who is 2nd at 7 seconds. Porte is at 8 seconds, while Velits has put in a great ride. 5th at 10 seconds for now.
Olman finishes 11 seconds behind, while Nibali clocks in at 18.
Two more 80 stat time triallists are next, but Schädlich disappoints to finish 13 seconds down. And Gonzalez Salas can only get to within 9 seconds of his teammate. This early benchmark is proving hard to beat!
Oliveira now goes 2nd! Still 5 seconds off Ligthart.
The gap is closed further by Hepburn, who is just 1 second behind.
Fellow Jayco rider Durbridge has the 2nd best TT stat in the field, but it's not his day either. 9 seconds down for a provisional 8th place, alongside the as-yet unmentioned time of teammate O'Shea.
In Norwegian news, Haugard disappoints for Spotify to lose 13 seconds. Three seconds slower than the earlier time of Laengen, while Cancellara comes in to match Haugard.
Velit's current provisional 10th is looking increasingly impressive, but there's better news yet for Moser - Sygic. A sensational ride by Danacik, who takes the new lead! Less than a second faster than Ligthart, but he will take it for sure.
One of the strongest GC riders against the clock, Abal matches the time of Velits. Cheung and Boom ride into the provisional Top 10, 8 and 9 seconds behind respectively.
We're into the final riders of each team, and it's time for Alarcon and Morton to begin their race. Morton finishes 17 seconds down, Alarcon 38.
Prologue specialist Stoltz takes 4th place! 3 seconds down.
Stage favourite Fiedler is next on course. He is fast, but not fast enough! He can only match the time of Danacik and Ligthart, slotting between them into 2nd place.
76 Prologue defies 82 Prologue, with just three riders left to finish.
Here comes Cattaneo.
He is fastest! A clear 2 seconds better than anyone else. He has never won a race previously, but could be heading to a first win and Maglia Rosa today.
Wildcard threat Ignatiev can only manage 6th place. 5 seconds behind.
The final rider is Coquard, and the Frenchman makes it into the Top 10 in 10th. Level on time with Van Baarle - with the Dutchman slightly faster, and taking the U25 jersey lead.
So Mattia Cattaneo takes this opening stage, denying a shock win for Jakub Danacik. La Gazzetta della Sport will have his picture painted over their front pages tomorrow.
Jayco - Cobra9 and Hugo Boss are tied in the teams classification, with Porto - Prio 4 seconds behind, then 14 to Moser - Sygic. An early indication for Stage 4's TTT perhaps, although that is of course much longer, and requires contributions from more than just 3 riders. Wiesenhof were 20 seconds behind, so don't count on Cattaneo holding the jersey for too long - even if sprinters such as Coquard (10 seconds) and Guarnieri (17 seconds) don't pick up sufficient time bonuses on the next two stages.
