Tour of Vancouver - Stage 2
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_000.png

The first road race is a flat circuit from Vancouver through Richmond and then back to a long and wide finishing stretch in Vancouver. 157km in total, the profile features a short climb, that has to be ridden three times. Certainly not enough to get rid off the pure sprinters, but with some notable crosswinds today, it's definitely a challenging stage.

Silvestre, Keukeleire, Guardini, Bouhanni and Moser as the most promising sprinters, while also some other guys like Aregger will fancy their chances, if the climb somehow destroys the less allrounded sprinters. GC and KoM leader Amador has less to fear today, but of course it's still about avoiding splits or crashes.

A group of 7 riders went clear early into the stage, but the group is yet not allowed to establish a bigger gap. They reach the first intermediate sprint still ahead of the peloton, but it looks like some teams are willing to pull the group back quickly:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png denz
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png sipos

It's indeed just a short-lived attempt, as the first breakaway group is swallowed by the pack with still 126km remaining..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_002.jpg

Soon after the first attempt has been reeled in, a next group with 4 riders goes clear. And this time, they are given a comfortable gap quickly. We've found the break of the day then:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png ebejer
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png moscon
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png craven
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png richardson

Ebejer takes the first mountain sprint ahead of craven, who then takes the second intermediate sprint ahead of ebejer and moscon. Ebejer keeps rolling, as he also takes the second mountain sprint ahead of moscon, and the third intermediate sprint ahead of craven and moscon. The group's lead peaks at something like four minutes until the peloton would start to chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png izagirre is leading the peloton into the final 21km of the stage, supported by teams like Indosaat, Fablok and of course UBS. The wind blows at 55kmh at this moment, where the breakaway only has a 1'21" advantage on the hard chasing pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png ebejer also takes the third and last mountain sprint, beating craven and moscon yet again. It's now just 10km to go and the peloton is about a minute in arrears, but still hard on the chase. Ebejer did pretty well to take all three mountain sprints today, but it's still too less to take the provisional lead in the KoM ranking:

As we approach the long finishing stretch, the breakaway is finally caught by the pack. The sprinter teams (mainly Euskaltel and Fablok) delivered their leaders a bunch sprint decision and here we have the names at the front:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png moser

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_006.jpg

Moser seemed a bit late at the party, but ji is pulling an impressive pace to move forward past all the others at the front. Still a way to go, but now moser is certainly in a better position than just a few moments before.

Behind the new leading duo, the battle for the best positions is on, with euskaltel now already pulling the final leadout man for bouhanni. Bad positioning from silvestre, who's losing contact to the very front, same goes for aregger, who has yet to hang on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_007.jpg

Ji still pulling moser as we reach the flamme rouge. There's a gap on the following sprinters, where we do have some changes now:

Guardini, king, pelucchi, barbari and hayakawa and bouhanni in the most promising positions, while silvestre has yet to find his top speed. Aregger ahead of keukeleire, who struggles to be competitive.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_008.jpg

Once moser had to go on his own, he's struggling to hold off the contenders: pelucchi, king looking good now, while guardini and hayakawa are a bit further behind.

Bouhanni still in contention for line honours and there's finally silvestre moving forward. Too late?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_009.jpg

Oh, this is going to be thrilling finish! The five best sprinters of the day are almost head-to-head with just a few hundred metres to go:

King with a small advantage over pelucchi, a still fighting moser, guardini, hayakawa!

Bouhanni is boxed in and won't fight for line honours and the surprisingly strong barbari can't compete with the very best. Also silvestre definitely kicked too late to fight for the stage. While keukeleire is totally cracking.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_010.jpg

We're approaching the line and it's still a tight battle:

Guardini and hayakawa now with the better speed over pelucchi and a struggling king! Also moser probably had too many metres in the lead, as he can't hang on with the best.

Silvestre and aregger strong now, but surely too late for the podium today..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_011.jpg

..and the winner is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png guardini! A thrilling decision, as he beats pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png hayakawa by a few inches. Both timed their sprint to perfection, but the Italian had the better end. This is what he came for. And he delivered.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png pelucchi completes the podium in a photo finish against pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png moser. The latter might have went too early, but still, there's some credit to give to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png ji, who certainly proved his strong skills on the flat here.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png king 5th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png aregger and a strong pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png barbari.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/vancouver/MG17_vancouver_2_012.jpg

No notable changes in the gc and so pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png amador stays in yellow for another day. Guardini sprinting to a shared lead in the points classification, but obviously the stage-win is the biggest news for fablok today. In a tight sprint like today's, it surely feels even better to come away with the victory of a pre-stage favorite.
