Tour of Romandie - Stage 6
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_000.png

The Tour de Romandie concludes with a prologue-ish ITT from Quinto to Ambri: 8km in total, the flat parcours probably won't lead to bigger gaps, but in addition to the battle between those TT specialists, who survived the mountains (Cornu as the big favorite for the stage), we have a thrilling fight for yellow today:

Sicard vs Kwiatkowski. Seperated by only 2 seconds. Equally strong in prologues. Big show.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_001.jpg

Let's go through the early starters and most promising guys for the stage-win rather quickly:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brändle had a notable best time, when he beat other promising times from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Haga (3 seconds) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kuboki (6 seconds) on his mission to take that final stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_002.jpg

With Ford and Sergent both already out of the race, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Cornu remains the big favorite for the stage and the Belgian timetrial champion delivers:

beating Brändle by 8 seconds, no other stage contender would come even close to his time eventually:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_004.jpg

Most of the GC positions inside the Top-20 wouldn't change much today, as the gaps were too big for a short timetrial to make a difference. Anyway, the battle for the Top-5 would still be one of today's more interesting questions:

Marquez (+ 1.53) as 6th, Van den Broeck (+ 1.42) and Brajkovic (+ 1.37) with an important run here.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Marquez with the first start of those three and he's obviously way behind Cornu, which won't matter anyway:

+ 38" as 65th eventually. Will this put some pressure on Van den Broeck?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Van den Broeck with a similar performance and so, he succesfully defends his Top-5 position:

+ 39" to finish a second slower, but no danger to lose a spot..

..but also not overperforming to put pressure on the better prologue rider Brajkovic..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brajkovic unsurprisingly with a much better time and even though he misses out on a Top-10 on the stage narrowly, he just secured himself another strong Romandie result:

+ 11" on Cornus as 11th on the stage..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_007.jpg

And now for the Top-3 in the GC. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Barguil just 26 seconds behind Sicard, but he's definitely the weakest prologue rider of the those three at the top of the GC. Only a special day would help him attacking Kwiatkowski or Sicard, but let's keep things short:

+ 28" on Cornu as 33rd on the stage, this ain't too special to improve in the GC. Still a great overall result for him in this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_008.jpg

So, now for the thrilling battle between the Top-2 guys. Just as a reminder: just 2 seconds difference. Any mistake or slow down can be crucial today. Any corner.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kwiatkowski obviously as the first of the two to cross the first split 3km before the finish line..

..the time stops at:

5'42" - that's 11 seconds off Cornu's best time, but he won't care..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_009.jpg

..and here comes pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard!

He crosses the split and the time is:

5'41"! That's a second faster than his challenger and so Kwiatkowski needs to improve now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_010.jpg

He's fighting to keep his chances for yellow alive. We do not notice any technical mistakes and he finishes the stage as provisional 13th:

10'25" at the finish, 20 seconds lost on Cornu. Would it be enough to gain those 3-4 seconds on Sicard, that he would need to grab the GC?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_011.jpg

Sicard is approaching the line.. just like Kwiatkowski, he didn't show any weakness in the final kilometres..

..where does the clock stop for him?

10'21"..

10'22"..

10'23"! That's two seconds faster than Kwiatkowski and the GC win is secured!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_012.jpg

As said before, not much chances to see any notable changes in the Top-15 of the GC. With Sicard defending his lead, it all remains the same after this final stage here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Cornu celebrating the stage-win, for which he came her. After five challenging days, the TT specialist recovered well to bring home a comfortable win on this final day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_014.jpg

Another mission completed: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard takes the overall GC win by the small margin of just 4 seconds! Overall, that's obviously a deserved victory, as he delivered on every key stage here. Though missing out on a stage-win, he came here to win yellow. And he did. Well done.

A narrow runner-up for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kwiatkowski ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Barguil. Both should be happy with this final result. Kwiatkowski did well on all key stages, while Barguil impressively rode to a key result in the mountain stage, moving from 10th to 3rd in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brajkovic and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Van den Broeck completing the Top-5 ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Marquez, who took the queen stage in style. That's some strong GC results for those climbers. The same goes for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky, who attacked on both key stages and despite missing out on a huge GC result, this 7th place in the GC is fair enough for the US boy.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Roglic, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Chiarello and a surprising 10th for KoM winner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Maillet, who finishes just ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Henao Montoya. The premium climber lost this race in the hilly stage and also couldn't deliver a special mountain stage like Marquez did.

Local favorite pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schelling saved his race from being a disaster in the mountain stage, eventually finishing 12th ahead of stage-winner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Roche, who lost his GC podium in the same stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_015.jpg

A shared win in the points competition: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kwiatkowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre scored minor points today, as both finish the race with 35pts in the classification. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kuboki (34) with a narrow 3rd then.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Maillet with a comfortable KoM win over Marquez and Schelling. His long breakaway in the tough mountain stage obviously as the key stage, that also made him move up to 10th in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_6_017.jpg

Despite cracking in the mountains yesterday, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Potocki takes the U25 win and finishes a still solid 18th place in the GC. He surely must have hoped for more, as he rode a strong hilly stage one day before. But with Brajkovic doing so well, the team can probably live with the young gun finishing solid enough.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Berg Cycles a commanding winner in the team's ranking: two in the Top-10 and Nazaret adding a 22nd place in the GC.
