Tour of Romandie - Stage 3
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_000.png

Next flat but also "hillyish" stage, that features a tricky parcours around Fribourg. Four mountain sprints and six climbs, we really shouldn't expect someone like Drapac doing better than yesterday.

Appollonio will aim to repeat his stage-win, but it's guys like Kuboki, Geschke or maybe even Navardaukas, who will fancy their chances as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_001.jpg

It's again a quite action-packed first quarter of the race: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Ramos Ticona took the first mountain sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Thill, who's therefore in the provisional KoM-lead. The duo would not be allowed to stay clear though and so it took another two attempts to finally find the break of the day.

Ovechkin, Prado, Yates, Thill, Chtioui and Kanepejs failed to go clear, but the next attempt is succesful:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Thill
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Prado
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Vila
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Beukeboom
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates

Yates crashed yesterday and while some would have rated him as a contender in a possible bunch sprint today, he's obviously willing to go for an aggressive race now. Thill obivously aiming to take the KoM-lead, while Beukeboom can actually gain the race-lead through bonifications!

Yates takes the next mountain sprint and Beukeboom finishes 1st and 2nd in the two intermediate sprints. Which is the provisional race-lead!

With now 23km remaining, the peloton is led by Berg Cycles, Carlsberg and Meiji. So we should expect Silvestre and also Appollonio to feel fine so far.

The breakaway is leading by a minute at this point, so they will also contest for the last mountain sprint and are still hoping to upset the peloton..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_003.jpg

Yates takes the sprint ahead of Ramos Ticona (who took the second mountain sprint today). And while Thill collects only 8pts towards the KoM ranking (Yates 18), he still managed to slip into the sole KoM-lead for one day at least:

KoM: Thill 22, Yates 18, Velits 14, Ramos Ticona 10

The peloton is still a minute behind with now 18km remaining..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_004.jpg

9km left and the gap is down to half a minute. The fast pace on the final descent makes it a dangerous ride now and we see the first big name hitting the turf hard:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Nazaret crashes with also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang going down. Both will be on the bike a few seconds later, but Nazaret is probably out of any GC hopes, as he would not make it back to the peloton and lose 5 minutes eventually.

A few minor crashes happened as well and it's bad news for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schär, who has to abandon today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_005.jpg

Meiji as the hardest working team (again) and they finally reel in the escaping group with only 3.5km to go!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Hatanaka is riding his bones off, leading out pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Hayakawa/Kuboki

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Matthews
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Kolesnikov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Cohen / Lavoine
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Fernandez

on the further positions..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kuboki explodes with still 2km to go!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Navardauskas caught up to Silvestre/Matthews in the meantime..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Roglic now also showing up in the mix for a stage result, while Kuboki sprinted a big gap as he reaches the flamme rouge..

Hayakawa trying to slow down Silvestre/Matthews, who're faster than Kuboki now! Lavoine, Kolesnikov, Cohen kicking as well, while Navardauskas struggles to keep his earlier speed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Geschke made his way to front as well and it's getting closer again:

Kuboki slows down, he looks totally cracked after going so early!

Matthews quickly catching up and dropping Silvestre/Hayakawa that way. Cohen looking stronger than Lavoine, while Geschke is clearly the fastest in that group behind Silvestre now..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_009.jpg

Matthews though even more impressive and the Aussie storms towards the line once he passed an exhausted Kuboki! The Japanese now desperately trying to hold off Silvestre..

Geschke on fourth position in the meantime, with Roglic and Cohen right behind him..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Matthews takes the stage in a dominant fashion! Perfect sprint and quite impressive to beat Silvestre that easily. Well done.

The fight for 2nd is still alive, as Kuboki seems to recover a bit..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_011.jpg

..and he does: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kuboki finishes 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre! He clearly went too early, but it's still enough for a runner-up spot today. Silvestre with another podium finish, even though he might have hoped for more once he kicked off the sprint with Matthews at his wheel.

Geschke with a late, but fast finish to 4th place ahead of Hayakawa, a strong looking Roglic and Cohen/Lavoine. Fernandez and Kolesnikov hang on for a Top-10 finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_3_012.jpg

As already said, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Beukeboom slips into yellow for one day. He probably will lose it in tomorrow's tough hilly stage, but he did well to join the break for a special day in yellow.

Matthews narrowly takes over the points lead by one point ahead of Silvestre and five on Lavoine. Appollonio (56th) couldn't compete today, so he's slipping down to 5th here. Potocki still leading the U25 competition and he will fancy his chances to keep it until the end.
