Tour of Romandie - Stage 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_2_000.png

The first of two consecutive flat stages, that ain't really that flat, to be honest. Today's stage features a quite challenging middle sector and it's questionable whether some pure flat sprinters will survive the stage in the front group.

Anyway, the favorites on paper are Appollonio, Silvestre and guys like Kuboki or Geschke should do well, too. Lavoine/Drapac as the worst climbers amongst the top sprinters here. Will this be too much climbing for them?

Several attacks right from the start, but it takes quite a while until a group is allowed to go clear:

Attempt #1: Prado, Sterbini, Selander, Benoot, M Van Niekerk, Kulimbetov
Attempt #2: Ovechkin, Wang, Thill, M Velits, Mraouni, Kasperkiewicz, Bettiol
Attempt #3: Ovechkin, Wang, Thill, Vila, De Vos
Attempt #4: Ovechkin, Thill, M Velits, De Vos, Selander, Pedersen

After 50km of an action packed race with several attempts to build a breakaway, three riders finally do so:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Bettiol
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Thill
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Velits

Just right in time for the first intermediate sprint, which is taken by Velits ahead of Thill..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_2_002.jpg

The trio would battle for the two remaining mountain sprints and the second intermediate sprint. Velits appears to be the fittest and takes the Cat2 mountain sprint to lead the provisional rankings after all sprints have been contested:

Points: Velits 12, Bettiol 8, Thill 4
KoM: Velits 14, Thill 14, Bettiol 8

With 41km to go, the breakaway leads by 3 minutes with the peloton already on the pursuit. It's raining and we have notable crosswinds. It's an undulating route as well. Will the peloton be in control?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_2_003.jpg

It looks like they are, as teams like Meiji, UBS, Fablok and Carlsberg share the work nicely. With now about 10km left, the escapees are soon to be caught. It's a fast and hard race now and it ain't too surprising to see a pure sprinter dropped from the pack:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Drapac couldn't hang on and won't be a factor today!

The slicky roads also make for some drama just ahead of Drapac, as there's a nasty fall of several riders, who won't make it back to the peloton until the finish:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Dillier
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Geniez
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Ivars
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Sergent

as the biggest names. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Sergent with some tough luck, as he has to quit the race at this point. Given that there's still an ITT up for grabs, this surely hurts (even though those late timetrials tend to see the GC contenders taking over the command). Anyway, always sad to see crashes happen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_2_004.jpg

The guys at the front won't care too much, as they enter the final kms: Meiji's Hatanaka leading the bunch under the 5km banner and it's still Carlsberg and Fablok with some prominent numbers at the front here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_2_005.jpg

And here we go with the bunch sprint: Carlsberg with the only real train, while Fablok's strong duo is going on it's own..

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Juul-Jensen - Bertilsson - Appollonio pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Geschke pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Matthews pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Räim

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Hayakawa already on his own as his "leadout" finished it's work after some hard chasing..

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Stepniak - Lavoine (and Cohen)

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Mørkøv pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Kolesnikov pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini

As those names in the mix. Carlsberg with some good looking support for Appollonio..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_2_006.jpg

Bertilsson/Appollonio now being passed by Stepniak/Lavoine though! Hayakawa with some good speed now, too. Geschke still waiting behind Appollonio, Kolesnikov is moving forward on the left side!

Also Zardini has some great kick at this point, but it's still a way to go..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_2_007.jpg

Lavoine is released and sprints to a small advantage! Appollonio a little bit boxed in by his own leadout, with still Silvestre and Geschke at his wheel..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_2_008.jpg

Lavoine still leading, but Appollonio has finally find a way through and moves ahead with some great speed now! Silvestre still at his wheel, while Geschke/Raim won't have an easy way through now.

Hayakawa struggles now, while Kolesnikov is still in a great looking position ahead of Morkov/Zardini. The latter can't compete with the fast guys anymore..

..this is going to be a fast finish between Appollonio, Lavoine and maybe Silvestre..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_2_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Appollonio takes it! He continues to impress this month, taking another stage-win thanks to an almost perfectly timed sprint today. When he looked boxed, some may have feared he won't make it, but he did. Impressive work by Carlsberg today.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Lavoine holds on to a respectable 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre, who couldn't outsprint Appollonio despite being at his wheel for quite while. Obviously, a podium is still a nice achievement.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Geschke with a strong 4th ahead of an impressive pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Kolesnikov, who finishes ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Hayakawa to complete the Top-5!

Raim, Matthews, a strong Zardini and Morkov round up the Top-10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/romandie/MG17_romandie_2_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Goncalves takes over the race-lead from Chtioui thanks to his 34th place in today's stage. The points lead goes to Appollonio, the KoM to Velits and Potocki leads the U25 rankings for now.
