Final stage and we get another challenging flat stage with more than 200km in total, some climbs (and the fight for the KoM) and the usual crosswinds for this week in Germany (up to 60kmh again). Yesterday, the peloton failed to catch the break, where Agostini took the stage to move up to 4th in the GC.
For GC leader Robert and all other GC contenders, it's all about finishing safely in the pack. Robert had his problems yesterday, where he finished as one of the last in the first main group. Today's stage ain't much easier. Let's get it on.
Nine riders broke clear early, forming the break of the day. Probably bad news for KoM leader Taborre, as one of his biggest contenders made it into the group:
Marentes (GC 37th, + 1.36 and KoM 2nd, 20pts)
Turchi (GC 32nd, + 1.28)
Mottin
Van der Ploeg (GC 38th, + 1.38)
Biondo
Goddaert
Hofer
Petrache
Roman
Marentes takes the first two Cat2 mountain sprints and already has a comfortable (aka save) lead in the classification:
KoM: Marentes 40, Taborre 22, Agostini 16
He also takes the first intermediate sprint ahead of Van der Ploeg..
Van der Ploeg keeps collecting bonifications when winning the next intermediate sprint ahead of Marentes.
We're jumping straight into the final 10km of the race, where the early break still holds on to a 1'24" gap on the peloton. Like yesterday, it's a dangerous situation for the pack, that really struggles to control the escaping group.
Van der Ploeg takes the last intermediate sprint, while Marentes also took the third mountain sprint of the day.
Roman got dropped from the early break soon after, but the 8-men-group still leads as we're in the final 5km of the race. The peloton is chasing hard now, narrowing the gap down to 45", so at least we may not see a breakaway rider entering the Top-10 in the GC today.
Goddaert now attacking from the leading group, 2.5km before the finish! A promising attack, as he opens up a gap quickly.
The situation at the front of the peloton ain't looking too organized, as we see a few teams still trying to limit the damage. And now that the gap is still at something like 30 seconds, a few sprinters move forward to the front:
Brus as the first in the row, followed by Thwaites.
There's Harrison, Pellaud and several more names trying to have a decent position. They may at least catch some riders of the early break, even though it's looking promising for Goddaert and his chasers!
Goddaert enters the final few hundred metres with a 15" gap on Biondo, Petrache and Hofer! It's a 900m "uphill" finish, featuring an average 4% slopes.
The peloton still more than half a minute behind..
Harrison now sprinting to the front of the pack, with still Thwaites and now also Havik not far behind..
Mezgec, Gatto, Van Hoff, Bennett and Croket as other promising names a few metres behind..
And now - unfortunately - some real drama in the middle of the pack! Salleh with a nasty fall! The points leader goes down and causes some real chaos in the pack, just on the tricky uphill finish close to a corner.
It's hard to catch all the drama, but apparently, it's mainly due to this crash, that a split occurs in this 129-men pack. At least that's what the race radio reports soon after the finish, just a few seconds from here.
Robert is on the wrong side of the split! Also Durasek, Kreuziger, Van Zandbeek, Uwizeyimana and a few more names will certainly panic and wait for the race directors to decide over this situation later on!
Goddaert takes the stage in the meantime, holding on to his gap until the finish!
+ 22" for Biondo, who takes 2nd ahead of Petrache!
The peloton, still led by Harrison, is closing the gap to the remaining escapees, but Hofer and Marentes complete the Top-5 with the same time as Biondo/Petrache..
Harrison coming in as 6th ahead of Turchi, Mottin, Thwaites and Van der Ploeg. Havik, Mezgec, Gatto, Von Hoff and Bennett completing the Top-15 of the stage then.
That's all minor news though, as the race directors announce their decision as for the split in the peloton prior to the podium celebration:
We see Robert close to crying, as his group with Salleh and Durasek gets a + 1'53" eventually! Tough news for the race leader, who significally drops in the GC in this final stage of the race. It's been quite a chaos and the cameras struggle to catch all the action (and honestly missed the split - that definitely did not look like a minutes gap anyway). Huge drama for Robert in particular. That's maybe the toughest way to lose yellow.
Three further riders did not finish the stage: Yzeiraj, Lovik and Dall'Antonia.
Laizer as the one, who truly benefits from the drama today. The Tansanian moves up to 1st in the GC and it's definitely the biggest achievement of a cyclist from his country so far. His strong showing in the ITT and a solid ride safely in the peloton made him earn yellow. Congratulations.
Jallays and Agostini round up the podium. Great results for all those three, especially Agostini probably would never had hoped for a result like that here.
Dennis as 4th prevents his team from a complete disaster, as Tennant (11th) and Robert (17th) at least add two Top-20 results eventually. Those tricky stages and crosswinds definitely made some one-dimensional TT horses suffer.
U25-winner Mullen a strong 5th ahead of Vandousselaere, Reus and Hacecký. Bouet and Kireva complete the Top-10.
A great day for some breakaway riders today, as Van der Ploeg (14), Marentes (15) and Turchi (16) moved up to Top-20 results.
Salleh with a tough day, but he finished the stage to secure his well deserved points jersey. Two stage-wins speak for themselves.
Marentes grabbing the mountain jersey thanks to 30pts today. Taborre and Biondo on the further positions.
Mullen with a comfortable win in the U25 competition, 57 seconds ahead of Turchi and Harrison as goes as 3rd.
