The opening TTT has two clear favorites: Generali - EDF and Team UBS. Their biggest challenger may be Orange Pro Cycling, as many other teams lack the real depth in TTTs. Anyway, a few surprises can always happen, so it should be an interesting battle for the first man in yellow today. Windy conditions, but nothing spectacular.
Isostar - Adriatic is setting a first notable best time at the first split. The team with Brajkovic surely would love to give it's GC captain a good start into the race and they ain't looking bad so far:
6'38" after 5.5km, a second faster than Euskaltel, three seconds ahead of Ferrero and Minions.
Novatek-Panarmenian.net with their TT horse Michael Ford can't beat Isostar at the first check, but they ain't far behind:
+ 3" as provisional third at the split..
Netia - Vónin with Kwiatkowski now. Definitely an important stage, as every second will count for their GC man. The team is going strong in the first sector, setting a new best time:
6'32" and therefore six seconds faster than Isostar!
Team UBS as the first top-favorite to hit the road and it's obviously the big goal to take the opening TTT and gain a notable advantage for their GC rider Schelling. They ain't dominating the first sector though, but it's enough for a provisional 2nd:
+ 1" on Netia after 5.4km. Some work to do for the favorites!
Berg Cycles with a fine first sector as well:
+ 2" on Netia as provisional 3rd at the split..
Generali - EDF as the last promising team on the road and with Roglic as their GC threat, there's not only the stage-win that counts today. Obviously, the team is top motivated and they crush the competition at the first split:
6'21" for the lead and more than ten seconds faster than Netia and UBS!
Orange Pro Cycling hadn't the best first sector, but the team is looking better at the second split after 13.2km:
15'33" for the provisional lead, now faster than Isostar, Novatek, Euskaltelt and also Netia, who kinda paid for their early efforts and find themselves more than ten seconds behind Orange at this split.
Euskaltel still doing fine and they are now faster than Netia and Berg:
+ 10" on Orange as provisional fourth at the split..
Team UBS with a great middle sector to fly past Generali by 5 seconds! With Orange already 16 seconds behind, the fight for yellow will happen between the two top-teams. Will Generali manage to gain those seconds back?
The team is still living up to their role as a favorite and they finish the course 14 seconds faster than Orange Pro Cycling, which will finish 3rd eventually. Generali crosses the finish line with a time of 21'50" and now have to wait for UBS..
..which holds on to their lead until the end! Team UBS takes the TTT by 8 seconds on Generali and 22 seconds on Orange! Isostar (31), Euskaltel (36), Novatek (38), Netia (39) and Berg (40) on the further positions and many teams lost about a minute or more today.
Chtioui crossed the line first and will wear the leader's shirt for at least one day. It has to be said though, that Schelling did not benefit from his team's stage-win, as the GC contender had a bad day and eventually finished 1'50" slower than his teammates!
The same goes for Roglic, who's + 1'58" on the GC, so the two best TTT teams couldn't really help their GC guys to gain an advantage over other contenders today. So as for the GC favorites, Sicard is today's big winner, as he crossed the line first for Orange with only 22" lost on Chtioui. Other notable GC contenders were Brajkovic (+ 0.31), Van den Broeck (0.36), Kwiatkowski (0.39) and Marquez/Nazaret (0.40).
Just like Roglic/Schelling, also some other climbers lost big time: Cunego (2.00), Panatano Gómez (3.42), Rujano (1.41), Talansky (1.25) or Sanchez Gil (1.23) as maybe the most notable names here.
