Third day in Germany, again some (less strong) crosswinds, a few challenging hills in the first third of the a rather short stage, that should once again see a bunch sprint for line honours. Salleh took the opener, but Haller surely wants to fight back today. For the GC contenders, it's all about staying safely in the pack from now on.
Two Cat2 mountain sprints on the menu, so we may see a new KoM leader, if Taborre ain't at it today. The action kicks off on the first early climb then:
Marentes (GC 65th, + 1.52)
Joeaar (GC 33rd, + 1.16)
Petrus
Afonso
as the first to attack. Marentes takes the first mountain sprint ahead of Joeaar and Petrus..
Marentes also taking the second mountain sprint (ahead of Joeaar) and while the early break is already going into pieces on those climbs, Marentes is virtually leading the KoM now!
Taborre probably knows that and attacked on that second climb to secure his leader shirt. The Italian flies past Petrus/Afonso, just like Vanthourenhout did a few moments before. He crosses the sprint as 4th and secures his KoM lead that way:
KoM: Taborre 22, Marentes 20, Schlegel 14
The race settles down then and with the most recent attack from the mentioned duo (and the other two early escapees dropped behind), this is the break of the day:
Marentes
Joeaar
Taborre
Vanthourenhout
Marentes would go and pretty much dominate the three intermediate sprints as well, taking two of them (coming 2nd in another). He collects 16pts towards those sprints, Vanthourenhout 14, while Joeaar (as best placed in the GC) could only sprint for 2pts eventually..
The escapees' lead peaked at 5 minutes, but as we're now entering the final 20km of the stage, we see the same teams chasing down the break like they did in the opening stage:
Sauber, Aereopostal and cycleYorkshire share the work and cut down the disadvantage to now already a minute. There's no doubt that the break will be caught and it's another bunch sprint decision today..
Strange things happening now though: 2.5km left and just as we were going to see, who's lining up at the front of the pack, there's a slow-down in the peloton. Maybe it's the shock of heavy crosswinds now (70kmh), or just a weird play of tactics. Either way, it's not too smart, because three riders wouldn't join the slow-down:
Manan - Awang - Salleh as a lonely train at the front!
The trio may not believe what's happening here, but they are in full-sprint mode to open up a 30" gap quickly. Awang with some kind of a leadout for Salleh, who's a few bike length behind though. The winner of the first stage is now accelerating with 600metres to go.
Finally, the remaining sprinters came to live. Definitely too late to sprint for line honours, but there's still a few points up for grabs:
Thwaites
Von Hoff
Krieger
Andriato
Angarita
Kip
Brus
Castañeda
Nizzolo
as those names at the front of the peloton, entering the finishing stretch..
Salleh went past Awang to win the team sprint competition. His second stage-win here and if it wasn't for today's easy going competition, this would have been great news. Anyway, he won't care.
The duo with a clear gap on Manan, who's still ahead of the sprinting peloton though..
Manan indeed completes the triple, finishing 32" behind Salleh eventually..
..so we have a sprint for the 4th place here: Krieger in the leading position ahead of Van Hoff, Thwaites and Andriatio.. Nizzolo and Castaneda significally faster at this point, still a few hundred metres to go..
..and it's indeed Nizzolo, who went past the others to finish 4th on this disappointing stage..
Von Hoff rounds up the Top-5 ahead of Castaneda, Krieger, Brus, Andriato and Thorsen. Haller with an even worse non-show than those guys, finishing 21st eventually.
Except of Salleh/Awang gaining some unexpected time on the peloton, there's no major changes in the GC: Awang moves up to 28th, Salleh to 72nd. Robert finished safely in the pack to retain the GC lead.
Salleh taking the lead in the points competition, now leading with 50pts. Awang moving up to 2nd (30pts), Haller drops from 1st to 3rd (26), Robert (25) and Castaneda (24) on the further positions with now two stages remaining.
