Vuelta al Pais Vasco Stage 3
Overnight GC leader Peter Sagan will be looking for a repeat of his performance from Stage 2. He has been in superb form this early season. Just 2 seconds behind him is Trofimov, who is also one of favourites to take this stage. The top 6 - Hagen, Van Garderen, Rolland and Bakelants being the others, are separated by less than a minute! It will be interesting to see if Rolland can hang onto his more illustrious neighbours, given his relative weakness.
Bobridge will be disappointed not to be nearer to the top after a getting a big advantage in the TTT. Riders like Ponzi, Gastauer, Ginanni and Skuijns, each a contender for the top spot in this race, will be looking to move up the standings.
Overnight White Jersey holder Calvin Watson currently sits in a comfortable position, and it would need a really bad day for him to lose it. Four contenders sit within two minutes of the Grieg rider's time, but the big name not challenging for the moment is Mohoric!
And now, we're off. And, it's raining...
A five man break of Umerbekov, Nardin, Bekmanis, Paterski and De Souza is allowed to get away at the first go. The Evonik rider is the best placed in the GC, just 3 minutes off Sagan.
The first three riders mentioned above go past the first KOM of the day, in that order.
We have an early retirement. Minguez Ayala gets off his bike and walks into the team car.
Laurent Didier breaks away from the peloton and tries to catch the break.
The break is now at the top of the second climb. The order through the KOM sprint is De Souza, Umerbekov, Bekmannis, Paterski and Nardin.
De Souza wins the third KOM sprint too. Paterski, Bekmanis, Umerbekov and Nardin follow. Didier is still in between the break and the peloton.
Caruso is dropped from the peloton already. He must have a injury or is unwell.
De Souza takes the points in the first intermediate sprint too. Paterski takes 2nd with Nardin 3rd.
Chernetskiy and Quevedo have now been dropped from the peloton and are already 90 seconds behind the peloton. We have 35 km to go and Didier is back in the peloton too.
32 km left now, and Gougeard and Duchesne attack. They catch up to the break. Houle also joins his teammate Duchesne in the break. Mohoric breaks away from the pack and is in the break now. Hoelgaard also attempts the same but is unsuccessful.
The riders pass the fourth KOM sprint of the day in the following order - De Souza, Houle, Mohoric, Gougeard, Bekmanis. De Souza gets a slight gap as he accelerates for the sprint.
20 km left now, the situation is as follows:
E1 -> De Souza
E2 (30" ) -> Houle, Duchesne, Mohoric
Peloton (1'40" ) -> 63 riders.
The other riders in the original break have been caught. Pello Bilbao has been dropped.
De Souza wins the second intermediate sprint. Houle 2nd and Mohoric 3rd. Duchesne has been dropped from the break.
At the 15 km to go mark, we see Siskevicius, Konig and Le Gac have been dropped.
Bilbao, Ulissi and Rolland are together, further behind. Rolland's hopes of keeping pace are well and truly over. Generali's race is coming apart after the high of the TTT.
With 12 km to go, De Souza has been dropped from the break after an immense effort.
Watson has been dropped by the peloton, opening up the White Jersey race for the moment!
The break is finally caught with 10 km to go.
The first attack from among the favourites comes with 8 km to go. It's Ponzi who initiated it, followed closely by Trofimov and Hagen. Remember that Trofimov is just 2 seconds behind Sagan in the GC!
The chase is being led Bakelants and Sagan.
The attackers are caught with 6 km left. The front group has been reduced to 25 riders.
At the third intermediate sprint, the calm at the front is broken by a rocketing Houle, who tries to take the points. He only manages 2nd behind Hagen, having started off a long way down. Trofimov takes 3rd and moves closer to Sagan.
Ignatiev, Kangert and Zakarin are the among the latest to be dropped.
At the 3 km mark, Ponzi accelerates again and manages to drop Pichon and Gastauer, among others, from the elite bunch.
With 2 km left, it is Ginanni pulling back the gap to Ponzi. He drops Bobridge, Sagan and Borges (Porto-Prio) with this effort! The Slovak can see his leader's jersey slip away now.
The front group now consists of Ginanni, Ponzi, Bakelants, Skuijns, Hagen, Trofimov and Van Garderen.
Van Garderen is distanced with 1 km to go as Ginanni still pulls.
600 meters, and it is Trofimov now dropped. The Tinkoff rider still has a sufficient gap to Sagan to take the lead after the finish. It remains to be seen whether Hagen can take enough time to jump from 3rd to 1st.
Hagen and Skuijns are now dropped. Just 300 meters to the line.
100 meters left. Bakelants coming up from the outside to challenge Ginanni. Ponzi is surely too far back now.
Sagan is more than a minute down, riding with Bobridge and Borges (Porto-Prio).
But Ginanni does enough to hold off the Strava rider and take the win. A great effort, together with Ponzi, which basically saw the field being ripped up in the final kilometers. Speaking off the latter, he comes in behind Bakelants to take a well deserved 3rd place.
Van Garderen finishes strongly, dropping Trofimov before the finish, but has to be content with 6th place, behind Hagen in 4th and Skuijns in 5th.
Trofimov does just enough to take the GC lead, a mere 6 seconds ahead of Hagen.
Bobridge, Borges (Porto-Prio) and Sagan come in next. Sagan goes from 1st to 5th while Bobridge once again cannot keep up with the top contenders.
Behind them, Mohoric's 19th place on the day means that he takes the lead in the U25s. Watson loses more than three and a half minutes to the Isostar rider and now trails him by 5 seconds in the standings.
First day's leader Rolland has fallen to 33rd place in the standings after this stage!
