Vuelta al Pais Vasco Stage 2

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%201.jpg

After a topsy-turvy Team time Trial, where even the winners pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Generali are likely to be quite unhappy after their leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi was dropped, along with a host of others, the first hilly stage comes to us with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Hagen the best placed among the favourites.

This is a hard hard stage in all aspects, with eight categorized climbs and no sustained respite from climbing in any section of the route. The big guns are all present and ready to fight it out for the win. Besides the ones already mentioned above, riders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Gastauer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skuijns will all look to improve from yesterday's showing. It is very difficult to call a winner. Also look out for riders trying to get into the break to score the big KOM points available.

As the racing gets underway, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Le Gac are the first riders to form a break. They go past the first KOM sprint in that order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%202.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Pavarin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski attack out of the peloton on the first descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%203.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Le Gac drops pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk en route to the second KOM sprint. He takes those points for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Euskaltel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%204.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk is meanwhile picked up by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Pavarin. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski sat up and was back in the peloton by this time.

Approaching the third climb, the three riders in the break are now together. Already, some riders have been dropped from the peloton. This includes the overnight White Jersey, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Carlos Verona. He did make it back some time later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%205.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Le Gac takes top spot in the third KOM sprint, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Pavarin.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Pavarin, in turn takes the first intermediate sprint points and time bonus.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%206.jpg

The pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Ferrero rider wins the next KOM too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%207.jpg

The first crash of the day involves pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Bodnar, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Meier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Denz. They have been dropped from the peloton now with 60 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%208.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Strava, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Evonik and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Hugo Boss lead the peloton forward for the time being. The break have 2'20" over them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%209.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Pavarin takes the bonus at the second intermediate sprint too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2010.jpg

On the fifth climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk took the points, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Le Gac and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Pavarin.

The break is caught with 35 km left. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Strava still lead the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2011.jpg

At the next KOM sprint, there is no urgency and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Didier takes it leading the pack. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Rolland, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Zakarin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants take the other available points.

Approaching the summit of the seventh climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge attack! They don't get far and are brought back into the bunch after the KOM sprint. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skuijns takes 3rd place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2012.jpg

Crash! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haas are down. They have been dropped from the peloton and with just 11 km to go, it doesn't look good for them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2013.jpg

And an even bigger crash! And just take a look at the names involved! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Dyball, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nardin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Stuyven, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Cornu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Kolesnikov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Grivko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Siskevicius, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Dall'Oste have all hit the floor. They fall more than two minutes behind the reduced peloton and there's just 10 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2014.jpg

The injuries are too much for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Cornu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Dall'Oste and they have to resign. Absolute disaster for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Euskaltel here after pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Caruso was dropped by his teammates in the TTT yesterday!

With 5 km left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Hagen attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2015.jpg

4 km left now, and six men chase the attackers. Overnight leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Rolland looks to maintain his jersey, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Pichon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Watson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Smirnovs keep the effort high.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2016.jpg

The group containing the riders who crashed with 10 km to go are now in the peloton of fifty riders, 2'20" down on the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2017.jpg

With 2.5 km to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan goes solo! He takes the KOM points available and builds a gap. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants all try to counter, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Hagen is uncharacteristically restrained.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2018.jpg

1 km to go now, and it's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan still leading with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Van Garderen 14 seconds behind. The group of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Hagen lie a further 16 seconds in arrears. Behind them...
E4 (59" ) -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginnani, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Pichon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Rolland, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Gastauer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skuijns, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Watson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Ignatiev
Peloton (2' ) -> 60 riders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2019.jpg

And there is no change in the final kilometer descent as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan hangs on to his lead to take another win this season! He also takes over the leader's jersey! He has the celebration to go with his ride. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Van Garderen takes 2nd and time off his other rivals. He moves up to 4th in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov wins the sprint for third. He is down just 2 seconds to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan in the GC. He is followed home by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi, in that order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni takes 7th, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Pichon and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Rolland. The overnight leader falls to 5th in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Gastaeur completes the top 10, outsprinting pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skuijns. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi also gets the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2023.jpg

The group containing the big name crash victims come in 2'33" behind! There is news coming in from race radio that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristian Dyrnes is a late retiree! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Aker have just lost their second leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS2%2024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan climbs the podium to claim his jersey.
