Qatar Oil Mountain Classic

Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%201.jpg

It is characteristically sunny, but uncharacteristically windless here in the desert of Qatar. This is the first edition of the race going up these man made mountains prepared just for this occasion.

We see two separate groups in the early breakaway. The four man group at the front has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Frank, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brandle, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Dayer Quintana and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Antunes.

Spoiler
For the rest of this report, I will call Nairo Quintana as Nairo and Dayer Quintana as Dayer, to not have to write full names every time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%202.jpg

Trailing by 20 seconds at the moment, is the next group, also having four riders - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Geniez, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Grigrian, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Baz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Alizadeh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%203.jpg

The peloton is a minute down. 14 riders have already been dropped, midway up the first climb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%204.jpg

The two groups in the break come together in the first descent.

On the second climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lpu.png Senni and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Jang attack out of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%205.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Frank, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Geniez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Baz have been dropped from the break. They are being caught by the recent attackers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%206.jpg

As the second climb starts, a group of 11 riders, including some race favourites get a gap to the peloton. The riders in this group are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Signorini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Sarmiento, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Pantano, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Geniez, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Jang, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Meier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Brandt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Simon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Barguil.

The peloton are 32 seconds behind and has most of the other race contenders.

Further behind, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brajkovic and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Shikai are the first of the big names to be in trouble today. They are in a big group almost two minutes behind the peloton. The only positive is that the size of the group will probably allow them to get back to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%207.jpg

Everything settles down and the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brajkovic group makes it back to the peloton by the time they reach the summit of the second climb. The break now have a lead of 4'48".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%208.jpg

There is 85 km left now and we're on the sixth descent. A group of riders is dropped containing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schelling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%209.jpg

They do make it back to the peloton on the next climb.

But the good news doesn't last. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brajkovic are dropped again on the seventh climb!

The race situation with 60 km left, after the seventh decent is as follows:
E1 -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brandle, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Dayer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Antunes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Alizadeh, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Grigrian

Behind them is the peloton, still having quite a few riders.

Further behind, trailing at 1'14" to the peloton is the group containing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brajkovic and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2011.jpg

The pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brajkovic group returns to the peloton on the eight climb, but they are already a couple of minutes behind the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran group.

We have an attack with 55 km left. It's in the break! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brandle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Alizadeh are dropped as the others speed away. The break have started lapping riders now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brajkovic and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte are dropped by the peloton again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky makes it back to the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran group but the others are distanced for good. Eventually pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Brenes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Choi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png De La Cruz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Maillet are also dropped. The chasers are now 7'37" down on the break.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Grigrian is dropped from the break on the eighth climb. It's down to just pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Antunes and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Dayer at the head of the field.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2017.jpg

We are on the monster climb to the finish and there's 18 km to go now. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Alizadeh and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brandle have been picked up, but not shaken off, by the group containing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Sergio Henao, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Barguil and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Marquez. The gap to the front two is still over four minutes. Which way will this race go?

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Grigrian is still in no man's land, 90 seconds ahead of this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2018.jpg

9 km left now, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Grigrian is caught by the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti group. The gap to the front two is down to 1'28".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2019.jpg

Behind them, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Berhane, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Brenes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Choi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Nazaret, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schelling, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png De La Cruz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Maillet are riding together now.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Sergio Henao is dropped from the favourites' group! This is a big surprise as the Colombian was the top favourite for the stage win. Also dropped is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brandle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Alizadeh. Their efforts in the break are catching up to them. 7 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Grigrian is dropped from the favourites group. The deficit from the break is now 50 seconds. 6 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky is now dropped from the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti group with 3.5 km to go, leaving four men chasing the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2024.jpg

1.5 km to go and the gap is increasing! The break have pulled their lead to over a minute now. Will they actually hang on?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2025.jpg

1 km to go, and the lead for the break is 1'8". Surely, it comes down to these two for the win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Marquez is dropped by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Barguil.

500 meters and the lead is 50 seconds. They're not sprinting yet. The cameraman makes a cameo appearance on our screens.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2028.jpg

400 meters and the sprint is launched.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2029.jpg

200 meters. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Dayer is much stronger. He seems to have this!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2030.jpg

And he does! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Dayer Quintana takes a phenomenal win from the day's break narrowly edging out pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Antunes at the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2031.jpg

He raises in hands in the elation of victory and hasn't he earned this one!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2039.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Barguil powers through to 3rd to make it a double podium for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Ticos. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti complete the top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2032.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Marquez finishes 6th. Berg also enjoy a good day's racing.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky is 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2034.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Grigrian hangs on from the break for 8th place!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2035.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Denifl has made up a handful of places in the final kilometers to finish 9th. He is followed to the line by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Brenes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Alizadeh (again from the break), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Nazaret, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Henao, who has gone off the hill at the end!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2036.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Berhane and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brandle are next. The breakaway have done well for themselves, all finishing within the top 16.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Qatar%20Oil/QOM%2037.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png De La Cruz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schelling, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Maillet and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Choi round out the top 20.
