It's an interesting gamble for Thaouta to go in the breakaway, as he is one of the 5 riders left in contention for the U25 jersey. It could see him move closer to the lead, or could see him lose time if the breakaway is caught early.
Meanwhile Meurisse is straight back in the breakaway after sharing the KoM lead yesterday. There's no climbs today though, so this doesn't seem like the wisest of moves.
The first part does go to plan for the Gabonese rider though. The strongest sprinter in the break, Sinclair, did not contest the sprints - and Thaouta won both of them. A gain of 6 bonus seconds, to move to 1 second behind Moscon.
And a further twist was to come in the U25 classification. With the wind blowing hard, a split forms in the peloton. And Lierse have been badly caught out. Moscon is dropped, and so is Oomen - also in the U25 Top 5. Magnusson too, but none of the sprinters.
The breakaway held out until towards the top of the climb at the end of the stage - at 6km to go. It meant a fast pace from the peloton, with Reckweg on the front when the capture was mode, followed by some of Fablok's national champions.
Reckweg kept on riding, only to suddenly find all the sprinters behind him as the descent began, led by his team leader.

But Reckweg neither intended to be a lead-out man, nor was willing to attempt it. He pulled over and dropped back, leaving a confused state amongst the sprinters.
Stepniak rushed forwards to provide a platform for Mohs, but the German then switched back across the road at the sight of other sprinters launching the sprint already at 2.7km to go: Serebriakov and Haller.
Mohs settles in behind Haller, with Guerao and Vantomme close. Kump has nobody to follow so goes already too, Nelson tucked in on his wheel.
At 1.5km to go Haller realises he has been far too adventurous and can no longer continue sprinting, so Kump goes ahead and into the lead.

It's an ideal position for Australian champion Nelson but just as he launches his move for victory, there's a slip of the chain, a foot out of the pedal, and his chance is lost. Guerao and Nizzolo also falling back now, with Modolo and Goss moving forwards.
All eyes on the near side now, as Van der Sande takes the lead! Jocelyn Bar is one of the strong men of the race and is also looking very threatening, defying his weaker sprint stat.
Mohs isn't out of this yet though! He has timed his effort well today, and moves up alongside Van der Sande.
And Erik Mohs wins Stage 3 for Fablok - Bank BGZ! 2nd for Van der Sande, and a very strong 3rd for CT rider Bar.
4th yet again for Vantomme, but he closes the deficit to race leader Kump, as does Van Asbroeck who came through to beat the Slovenian for 5th. Van Poppel, Modolo and Goss are next - with Goss' teammate Cheng Ji coming through for 10th place, ahead of a capitulating Nelson.
And the gamble paid off for Thaouta! The local rider hung on for 51st, with only 52 left in the group at the end. He takes the U25 lead on a great day for Haute Route - Mavic - with now only Alberto Bettiol left as a close rival.
At the top of the standings, Kump has 5 seconds on Van Asbroeck, 9 seconds on Vantomme, 16 on Van der Sande and 26 on Guerao and Modolo. It's a 4 point lead for the Points jersey over Van Asbroeck, with Mohs now 3rd there.
