Final stage in Trentino and it`s a tough one with 3 big mountains in the end.
Penasa is having a rather comfortable lead right now 1'40 over Valls. Salinas, Cataldo and Suaza follow within the next 40s.
Seeing the first two mountain stages it`s hard to predict really. If Suaza has the legs again, he can surely make a comeback. Eastman as well waiting on the day with the little extra.
First of all though the break of 8 with none being closer than ~8-9min.
Ruijgh
De Clercq
Zoidl
Vuillermoz
Cuming
Le Bon
Baltazar
Curfs
A group of very similar and decent climbing skills and hence one that will make it difficult for the peloton.
McCutcheon and Kamzong join them a bit later making it a total of 10 but those two clearly the weakest climbers of them. They are on 20 and 18 points though in the KoM competition and hence a danger for Pirazzi, who is leading at 48.
One sharp corner and one rider down equals several riders hit the tarmac.
Suaza is one of them and this is not a good sign ahead of three long climbs when in need to gain time.
Others are Jim, Burmann, Pozzo, Nakane or Hacecký, who clearly will be missing their leaders now as it`s soon to go uphill.
They all make it back in time though. Good news at least.
Valls must feel good and very confident. 4 of his helpers in the first rows working for him.
GC leader Penasa must be happy with this and only having one of his team mates working.
Meanwhile in the breakaway the first riders get dropped. Within those the KoM threats Kamzong and McCutcheon.
Also De Clercq, Ruijgh and Cuming can`t follow.
On the top Zoidl has gapped the remaining 4 of the break and takes the 16 points.
Interesting that a total of 48 points can be gained today, the exact total of Pirazzi. Zoidl had 0 and could in theory get the shared win!
The first climb already is a huge benchmark for the stage. Lots of selection and one team really going for it.
It must have really been a shock for Penasa, when Pozzo crashed. But good that no injury is seen. The Italian actually having paced up the climb and totally splitted the group. Only 2 more riders with the Kulzcyk duo!
Valls and Karnulin and both isolated from their support. In especially Repsol looked so strong until now.
Behind them the Azteca train as Eastman still has Ochoa Quintero and Weber with him. The only other rider then is Salinas trying to defend the podium.
Then Anacona with Karnulin`s helpers Burmann and Manfred.
Moschella, Campero, Cataldo, Hacecky, Atapuma, Girardi and Cunego next but huge gaps already!
Panayotov, Tvetcov, Diaz, Suaza behind them. Not sure if later injured or once again not concentrated.
Even further behind Bennett, Rujano, Solis, Medvedev, Mannion.
Strong ride by Eastman. He is back with the GC leader group which is still led by Pozzo.
The long descent then saw some groups fusion. 20 riders in total now hunting the Penasa/Valls/Eastman/Karnulin group. Within those Suaza, Salinas, Cataldo, Atapuma, Anacona, Panayotov, Diaz, Campero, Moschella...
A bit behind still Bardet, Anton, Stetina, Rujano as also further behind Bennett or Khripta.
Moschella once upped the pace for his leader Atapuma and immediately the group of 20 did split.
Suaza and Panayotov behind as also Diaz, Tvetcov, Pozzovivo.
This means only Campero, Cunego and Hacecky with them while Salinas and Anacona are in between.
Pozzo has done enough. He can`t follow hte pace and Penasa taking over. This immediately sees Eastman as well being dropped. Really not his best race it seems.
Ouch. The next one. Valls is having a nice race in general but he as well can`t follow now. Penasa clearly being the strongest in Tirreno this year and a surprisingly strong Karnulin being the only other GC rider left now with him. 7th in the GC at the moment for him but big chances to improve today.
2min only behind Zoidl and seconds behind the other 4 former breakaway riders. So stage win is possible.
And just a bit before the KoM it`s also saying goodbye for Karnulin. Just when they joined the break, Penasa accelerated and goes solo.
Hence it`s now a duel between him and Zoidl, who is having a 2min lead still.
Well. It was a duel at least. Just 12km later after the descent, the gap is gone and we have 2 riders in front.
And again just 2km later and there is again a gap. Though this time Penasa in the solo lead going towards stage and GC win.
Karnulin still going strong being in 3rd position and 80s ahead of the Valls/Eastman group.
Then gaps become bigger. Another 2'44 for the Atapuma group, which have 38s on Salinas and Cataldo, who are having a rather weak day here.
Suaza even behind them shows that he clearly is handicapped after his crash. At least a bit. Still performing better as Bennett in the later groups, who is clearly losing his top10 today.
Zoidl also caught by Karnulin now. 8km to the finish line.
1'40 is the gap to the next and hence a long fight for the Austrian to at least get a stage podium.
In the next group Eastman not got rid of Valls, finally showing his climbing skills. But it`s incredible 4min for Penasa already as he was the only one going fast all day never stopping, never waiting, never relaxing.
And hence fully deserving his title. Not even celebrating before the line, probably beating every record on this climb. Pure domination, today and in the GC.
Karnulin in 2nd! Huge ride as well by him. Might have been the most important stage to have a brilliant day. Hence consistency until now and then a strong final day might deliver him a podium even.
Behind Zoidl really gave his best and is rewarded with the stage podium. KoM wise he obviously would have needed the win here but still climbs up to 3rd with all points collected today. Penasa up to 2nd just 2 points behind KoM winner Pirazzi.
Eastman comes over the line next ahead of Valls, who is just around the corner. It was 3min for Karnulin. 4'13 for Eastman and 5'09 for Valls. Just wow.
This moves Karnulin in 2nd in the GC, Valls goes onto the last step of the podium and Eastman to 4th as gaps behind are big.
Diaz wins the sprint for 6tth ahead of Hacecky and Bardet. 5'30 for those. Decent race as well for SanCor with 2 stage wins and Diaz in 8th in the GC.
Behind and 7s slower Panayotov, Atapuma, Mr.Trentino Pozzovivo and more. Later with a 9th in the GC yet again with a decent performance in his age in especially.
Cataldo, Anacona and Salinas one of the bigger losers today. 7'50 for them and hence a bit more than 2min behind the other group.
GC wise Salinas down to 5th ahead of Cataldo and Atapuma. Anacona even down to 17th.
Suaza with his crash today drops out of the top10. 12th for him in the end as he lost 10'27. Same for Bennett, who is dropping to 14th.
Also some riders abandoned today: Centrone, Ssabagwanya, Losch and Vandousselaere.
