Giro del Trentino - Stage 2
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0035.jpg

The first of 3 mountain stages in Trentino today. Favourites are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Eastman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Suaza as best climber and then a long list of challengers, that in fact aren`t far off. Valls, Penasa and so on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0036.jpg

5 in todays breakaway which formed on the downhill section early on.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/avc.png Pirazzi
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Nzeke
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png McCutcheon
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Magnusson
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Lietaer

Quite a big difference actually in climbing skills. Early on a mix of Repsol and Kulczyk riders organize the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0044.jpg

Later on Reddit and Azteca join them and hence show their interest in todays stage.
Eastman, Valls, Penasa, Anacona. Clearly 4 of the best riders and hence their teams hope for big results.

The first long Cat.1 climb already was too much for some riders and hence they abandon the race. Some clearly once hit the ground as well and decided to recover instead for future race. In especially Sancor hit hard with 2 of their riders.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Trillini
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Richeze
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Schwarmes
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Sanogo

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0054.jpg

Also Andorra with a problem. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Rujano is behind the peloton. Not cleared if a crash or simply a split. But he is 3-4min and without team mates.
Sure Solis is in the top group still but even at 35 years of age, Rujano showed his skills in Tachira impressively and might even be the better stage racer as Solis, who is a climber only.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0058.jpg

46 km to go and just before teh Cat.2 starts, a group of 4 decides to attack. Interesting move really seeing the riders in there:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png De Clercq
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Medvedev
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Le Bon
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png La Lavandier

3 of them are mediocre stage hunters, but Medvedev makes it really interesting as Eddie Stobart has no big support but more a strong climbing duo of him and in especially Suaza. Hence they did not chase much today and instead go into the attack with their co-leader now to put the pressure on other teams instead and allow Suaza a "free ride" in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0064.jpg

Pirazzi is the strongest uphill and gets teh big points. behind him Nzeke coming over the line next while the group of recent attackers joined the remaining breakaway in the background.

Though also the peloton is within 1min already and the long climb yet to come.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0067.jpg

19km left and Repsol`s Nakane is leading the peloton into the climb. The break including the late attackers all got caught now and hence the Eddie Stobart tactic not playing out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0081.jpg

Nakane really powering on the first kilometers and hence lots of splits appear.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0082.jpg

With him only 4 riders!
His leader Valls as also Eastman with team mate Stetina and Penasa as lucky rider now isolated though.

In Briceno another Azteca helper actually following next showing the impressive climbing depth by the team.

Then Anacona and Tvetcov with another Repsol in Serrano and Penasa`s first support Pozzo while the next Azteca coming solo afterwards. So clearly some strong climbing support for mainly Azteca and Repsol.

Cataldo then also ahead of the big peloton of remaining leaders which includes Suaza, Bennett, Panayotov, Solis, Salinas, Karnulin, Campero, Moschella and many more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0087.jpg

Mainly Xero working now with Anton-Salinas-Bennett in first positions. Moschella right behind and Lewis as well working for Suaza a bit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0091.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Penasa working clearly the most having a good day it seems.

Surprisingly only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Valls able to follow as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Eastman just got dropped! 14,5km ahead of the line! Wow.

The quintett of Anacona, Tvetcov, Nakane, Stetina, Serrano follow ~90s later.

Then 6 riders including the Xero train Anton-Salinas-Bennett plus Suaza, Moschella, Hacecky another 20s later and as well 20s ahead of hte peloton where Cataldo is dropped into again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0093.jpg

Those two smaller groups then fusioned and also others such as Karnulin, Campero, Cataldo made into this bigger group of 21 riders now (missing out still are e.g. Solis and Panayotov!).

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Suaza though finally has enough of waiting and attacks, now being the first chaser of the trio in front. 90s to Penasa and Valls, 15s less to Eastman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0096.jpg

Stunning climb by Suaza now! It took him only ~4km until he catches the trio! Though most likely the top 2 slowed down a little bit due to the long way to go still as also Eastman was able to join them. So 4 riders in front now with 9km to go.
2min advantage to the next group of 20!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0098.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0099.jpg

No longer 20. Yet again a split in this 2nd tier group as 6 riders got a gap.
Bennett proving to be the strongest of Xero plus Anacona, Karnulin, Atapuma, Cataldo and Pozzovivo, who is the most successful Trentino rider in the history of the race and yet again shows his qualities late in his career.

Behind him a rather unknown rider in Burmann, who is Karnulin`s support but also going strong and ahead of the following.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0104.jpg

Now Valls the rider doing the most in the front group. And yet again Eastman the first rider to struggle. Not his day it seems and clearly a level below the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0106.jpg

Also in the 2nd group one rider now struggles and it`s Xero`s Bennett and suddenly the strong climbing team finds themselves with no rider in the top10 positions at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0108.jpg

Not a lot happened until 2km to go. The trio having a 30s gap over Eastman, who is fighting to avoid a bigger time loss and still is in sight. Another 70s for the riders behind and hence decent gaps but far from the potential gaps with 15km to go when the initial move had started.

Now though the move for the win maybe? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Suaza goes around the other two and none of them can follow immediately.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0110.jpg

They also can`t follow later. Incredibly fast Suaza has opened a 20s gap and increasing still with the Flamme Rouge almost reached.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0112.jpg

This must have been the fastest kilometer climbed in history. The Colombian simply didn`t slowed down and neither showed any sign of exhaustment here which was clearly shown by all others at the end of this 20km climb. What a huge victory and he gained lots of seconds on this final part!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0114.jpg

Penasa wins the sprint for 2nd against Valls. Those two really are very similar strong climbers on paper and in reality as seen today. But both lose more than a minute on Suaza! Was this already the decision?

Another ~50s later Eastman crosses the line. 4th is good but as top favourite he surely had hoped for better. Apparently not the divisions top climber as was expected pre season.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Trentino/mg2017_trentino_02_PCM0116.jpg

Cataldo then over the line next but more than 3min down. With him Pozzovivo, Anacona, Karnulin and Atapuma.

Surprisingly behind Salinas already as first Xero rider and in front of Bennett!

4 riders missed the time limit: Trillini, Schwarmes, Richeze and Sanogo.
