[HC]Tour de Pologne
Stages 7/7 Kraków - Kraków 132,0 km
From Bukowina Tatrzanska the tour have moved about 110 km straight north to Kraków, the 2nd largest city in Poland, the first known settlement dates back to the 4th century, but archaeological evidence proves that people lived here back in early stone age. Today a city with a metropolitan population about 1.7 m.
The final stage of tour de Pologne will start and finish in Kraków, with intermediate sprints in Wieliczka after 23,4 km, a cat 3 KoM at Kraków Rynek after 26,9 km, and another intermediate sprints again in Wieliczka after 106.3 km
172 riders are starting at 7th stage. It's pouring down with rain
Media favourites:
The Race
Immediately Vink opens the stage with an impressive acceleration.
Many other riders attack and it ends up in a 9 rider breakaway, as far as I remember the largest we have seen in this race.
The riders are , Vink, Stöhr. Omarsson, Milan, Hivert, Michely, Craven, Schumacher, Khalilikhosroshani.
In the early part of the stage it is mainly Lilovski, and Le Court
Paulinho pulling the peloton forward, pace about 40 km/h.
The breakaway roll over the first sprint without paying any attention to it.
Michely
Hivert
Khalilikhosroshani
The weather is awful and the unavoidable happens, a large crash.
Rider involved are, Watson, Fuglsang, Tanovitchii, Baz, Mendes, Skjerping, Bazhkou, De Souza, Zaraliev, Samwel, Lunke and unlucky Sagan who won't be able to cross the line in Kraków
The KoM points have no interest for the breakaway either, they just keep the pace only a stage win on their minds.
Khalilikhosroshani
Milan
Vink
The only slightly interesting development over the next period is that Kraftwerk in the form of Vachon have joined the rider in the front of the peloton.
With 95 km to go this distance max out at about 4’30”
Fast forward - 40 km to go, distance is reduced to 1’54”
The same teams is driving the peloton for but with more riders, Le Court, Lilovski, Docker, Paulinho, Park and Vachon sharing most of the workload. Peloton speed 45-47 km/h
Over the next 30 km the pace is increasing little by little, while the distance is slowly shrinking. The sprinters is moving forward trying to position themself without getting to much wind on the nose. 12 km to go for the peloton the pace is 61 km/hour. distance 1’36.
Pulling the train we see in this order, Balloni and Nardin. Flügel, Irvine.
Amongst the top sprinters Kupfernagel sitting in 12 position at the right side, behind teammate McEvoy, behind him Ewan, Lavoine, Maksimov and Modolo
At the right side Moser in 17 position, behind him Cavendish trying to move forward to connect with Kreder.
In the picture we also see Mansilla and Manarelli a few positions behind Cavendish.
5.0 km to the finish, still no attacks between the 9 rider in front, distance 39”
26 rider left in the group of sprinters. Kraftwerk now doing most of the pursuit.
The top sprinter sitting first is now Lavoine at the left side in 7th position. At his rear left Ewan, and right behind Lavoine Maksimov, Moser, Modolo and Mansilla in that order.
At the right side behind race leader Froome, Cavendish with Kupfernagel on wheel.
Serebriakov is disconnected but close, trying to make contact.
Manarelli struckling even further back.
At the same time Hivert attacks in the front group, he get a good gap at first, but Milan accelerate and comes up to his rear wheel. The duo has 51” with 2 km to go.
In the sprinter group Park has no more to give in front and Kreder opens the sprint for Cavendish.
Right behind them Yates, Docker with Ewan
Serebriakov has improved remarkebly now squeezed himself in between Kupfernagel and his leadout.
All the previous mentioned sprinters are in the group, except Manarelli and Lavoine whom both now seem to be out of it, behind the group.
Under the red kite it is Kreder with Cavendish looking very good, looks like they will easily catch Hivert and Milan at that speed.
Serebriakov looking good passing McEvoy with Kupfernagel
Also Moser accelerating nicely.
Not to far behind them Yates is fast, but Ewan is not directly connected, will be costly to close the gap. Everyone else is behind Ewan seems almost impossible that anyone could close the distance up to Cavendish from there.
600 meters left.
Kreder has caught what is left of the breakaway.
It is over for McEvoy but Kupfernagel is fast, now right behind Serebriakov, about 2 meters behind Cavendish.
Moser have lost momentum now back in the group with Ewan, Maksimov, Modolo, Mansilla, more and more unlikely that any of those can take this stage.
Now that is this, Kupfernagel is hammering inside Cavendish and then outside Kreder, with a pace that makes the others look like that are taking a break.
Kupfernagel wins in Kraków, creating gap enough over the last 400 meters, to celebrate before he crosses the line.
To some surprise it is Kreder 2nd, teammate and stage favourite Cavendish have to settle with 4th, as also Serebriakov beats him to the line.
Maksimov fastest in the next group for 5th, in front of Ewan and McEvoy
Best placed form the break Hivert 8th.
As expected the stage had no impact at the top of the CG. Chris Froome wins Tour de Pologne in front of Diego Ulissi and Tejay Van Garderen.
Ulissi lost the points classification to Kupfernagel having a brilliant day in Kraków.
Already secured yester Venter: King of the hills.
Yates best amongst the young riders and MOL-OMV Petrom won the team clasification
