Stages 5/7 Golebiewski Karpacz - Jelenia Góra 176,3 km

From Katowice the caravan have traveled almost 300 west, back to Karpacz where it all started, just like stage 1 we are heading towards Jelenia Góra but on a different route.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/profile.jpg

The first obstacles of the stage is two relative short cat 3 climbs coming up after 32.3 and 40.7 km, after that about 80 relative flat kilometers with two intermediate sprints, after a total of 55.7 and 63.3 km.
Then we get to the last 50 km, with 2 cat 1 climbs before the final climb up to the finish line. About 5 km each with long sections of 7-9%. The finish also count as a cat 1.

173 riders are starting. It is a beautiful sunny winter day with a moderate breeze.

Media favourites:

The Race

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kraftwerk is pulling very hard on the first 25 km, making it impossible so attack. Then after about 30 km, 5 riders are establishing what could look like todays breakaway, and it seems as if everyone is content with that.

A strong group with rider well equipped for a hilly terrain, it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Samwel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Vink, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Paulinho and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lindau

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Vink opens the KoM sprint from 1.3 km, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter in 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Paulinho should in theory the the strongest on those kind of short climbs.

Shortly after the peloton passes the KoM is it announced that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lehtinen withdraws, without any reason given. At the same time we see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Pszczolarski attack from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lindau makes a brilliant attack from 3rd position on the next KoM, taking everybody by surprise.

126 km to go, peloton at 3’47”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/02.jpg

On the long flat section we have different teams working at front, but most of the workload is done by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Park, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Sweeting, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Vachon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Keough, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish !!, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Nareklishvili, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Hivert, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Jones, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Geniez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Martin

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Pszczolarski join the front group just before the first intermediate sprint. There is no fight at the sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter is pulling hard up the first cat 1, isolation a group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Paulinho and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lindau.

900 meters to the top, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lindau accelerate, having diamond legs today he keeps the stronger punchers behind him to take the KoM.

Peloton at 2’59”, 42 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/04.jpg

In the back of the peloton larger groups are falling behind, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden already at 7’01 he is clearly injured. 92 riders left in the peloton after the climb.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Pszczolarski

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Park

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Henao, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Geniez, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Zielinski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Jones setting pace on the downhill.

29 km to go, Peloton at 1’15

Between the two Cat 1 climbs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Samwel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Vink, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Pszczolarski are swallowed, now just three riders left in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/06.jpg

Again it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter leading the breakaway on the climb, until pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Paulinho attack with 1.4 km to the top.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Paulinho quickly open a relative huge gap, a late attack from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lindau is not enough to catch up, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter seems to be in pain at this point 28” behind.

Peloton is at 1’56

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/07.jpg

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kreder and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png McEvoy leading the peloton uphill this time.

Result of 2nd. Cat 1

After the downhill the situation is:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Paulinho alone in front

At 28” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lindau

At 59” The peloton with 58 riders, including the race, KoM and Young jersey holders. And all the stage favorites.

Just as the road starts to raise and the peloton gets contact with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter, the first attack. It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sanchez Gil, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Kadri counters and also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Watson is giving it a go a bit further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Watson did not make it and Landau also gets caught.

With 5.5 km to the top pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sanchez Gil got 7” to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Kadri who is now with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Paulinho, peloton at 46”

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sanchez Gil accelerates again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/10.jpg

3.5 km left for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sanchez Gil, he has 34” to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Kadri, 1’01 to the favorites.

Now comes the first attack in the favorite group, It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Van Garderen clued to his rear wheel. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi close behind and a little further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Gautier is also moving fast.

Race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel is sitting in 15 position, can or will not react on the development.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/11.jpg

2.5 km left for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sanchez Gil, he has 42” to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Kadri, 54” to the group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Gautier.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome is pulling with all he got, seem to be very hard for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Gautier to keep up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/12.jpg

1.5 km left for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sanchez Gil

At 48” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Van Garderen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Kadri

At 1’03 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Gautier.

At 1’12 The peloton, 25 riders with the race and youth leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/13.jpg

Without any sign of celebration Netia – Vónin’s 34 years old veteran pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Luis Leon Sanchez Gil takes a solo win in Jelenia Góra, with 40” to the favorites coming in behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/14.jpg

In the next group it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome opening the sprint from 500 meters, at this point the trio got 14” to group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Kadri is still in this group, great performance from him today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Van Garderen outsprint pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome for 2nd, but it will be pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome wearing yellow tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Kadri takes 4th in the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Gautier wins the sprint in the next group for 5th, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Klemme, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Betancourt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Juul-Jensen they lose 1'02

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage5/17.jpg

Further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel’s bad day have turned even worse, he lost contact coming in alone a 1’46, falling bck to 3rd in CG behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter takes over the KoM from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mol.png Michely

Simon Yates, Mario Vogt and Matej Mohoric, all came in together leaving the youth competition unchanged.
