Tour de Pologne - Stage 2
Tamijo
[HC]Tour de Pologne

Stages 2/7 Toruń - Warszawa 232,9 km

From Jelenia Góra the tour caravan has moved about 400 km northeast to Toruń, Toruń was established in 1233 by the Teutonic Knights. Today a city of about 200.000 inhabitant. From Toruń the stage is heading for Polish capital Warszawa (on introduction needed).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/profile.jpg

The 2nd stage is the longest of the race, 232.9 pancake flat kilometers with just an almost symbolic cat 3 climb ”Plock” after 100 km, two intermediate sprints ”Kamion” after 138.9 and ”Kopytow” after 187.4, will provide some action before the expected mass sprint in Warsaw.

Media favourites:

The Race

We still got a full peloton of 177 riders, today the weather has worsened very clouded and some winds. Rain and wet roads must be expected.

After 4 km pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon opens the race, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Stachowiak with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Hivert on wheel counters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/01.jpg

Within the first 10 km we also got attempts from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Prades, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Halme, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Ebejer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Er Rafai but none of them makes it to the first group.

It has started to rain a little from time to time.

The Peloton slows down, the tempo set by Podium Ambition pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Le Court, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Lilovski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Lawless doing most of the work
Others teams are participating, Kraftwerk Man Machine’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Park the most active.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/02.jpg

The trio in front build an early lead of almost 11 minutes, with 2 km to the only KoM climb, is has been reduced a little to 9’16, 124.5 km left.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Stachowiak attacks for the KoM, but that may have been too early because he runs out of energy, it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Hivert taking the 6 points, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/03.jpg

Up to the first intermediate sprint, the distance is slowly but steadily decreased. With 94 km left it is now down to 6’21 km.

Again we see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Stachowiak open the sprint, but it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon taking the 6 points.

The weather is getting worse, heavy rain and more wind, now wind speeds at 41 km/hour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/04.jpg

With 78 km to the line for the first time we see Carlsberg - Danske Bank taking part in leading the peloton to protect the yellow jersey, it is now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Contador and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Schumacher setting the pace around 41-42 km/h, the distance is reduced to 5’00.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/05.jpg

Another 33 km up to the next intermediate sprint, the distance is now 3’14, 45 km to go.
Again we see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Stachowiak open the sprint, again it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon grapping the 6 points and bonus seconds in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Stachowiak.

The rain has stopped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/06.jpg

Passing the intermediate sprint the final hunt to bring back be trio begins, it is Podium Ambition setting most of the team up front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Lilovski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Docker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Lawless and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Le Court, upping the pace to more than 55 km/h

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/07.jpg

With 31 km to the line the distance is 2’13, not looking particularly good for the break.

The high pace stretch the peloton to the point where small gaps appear, now is not the time to be caught hanging low.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/08.jpg

Under the 20 km banner the distance is 1’07

With 16 km left the peloton has the trio in sight, besides the last desperate attacks to keep a gap open, it is over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/09.jpg

5 km to the line

Indosat Ooredoo – ANZ’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Colbrelli have been caught off guard, he is in a 2nd group at 2’07. A total of 88 riders left in the first group.

In front the Kraftwerk Man Machine train, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Mehr-Wenige, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Irvine, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish

Right next to Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden and behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Lavoine and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Maksimov in that order.

The pace is 58 km/h.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/10.jpg

Further back Podium Ambition has lost contact with a few meters, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Docker trying to close up with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan on wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/11.jpg

4.2 km to the line
Something quite strange happens in the peloton, the pace suddenly drop to just 46 km/h behind the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kraftwerk Man Machine train, opening a gap of 10-15 meters.

It seems like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden couldn’t keep up with the pace, and no others want to take over, until Podium Ambition reach the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/12.jpg

3.7 km to the line
What may seem even stranger is that the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kraftwerk Man Machine train is also slowing a little, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates is hammering forward at 60 km/h with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan on wheel, passing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish, the only Kraftwerk Man Machine rider keeping a high pace is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Park.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden still in front of the next group but 10 km/h slower than Yates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/13.jpg

2.3 km to the line
We now have a situation where Podium Ambition is leading the first group.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Docker is back, now on Ewan’s wheel.

At Docker’s right side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kreder and behind Docker pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden is back.

At Van Heerden’s wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Maksimov, behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Kupfernagel.

We also see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Serebriakov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Lavoine, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Mansilla in the picture, but a long way to the front, with the sprint opening very soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/14.jpg

The sprint opens with 1.7 km to the line.

In the middle of the road pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Docker in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden on wheel.

To the left of them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Maksimov

At the right side of the road pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish have now caught up, sitting on the wheel of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kreder.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Kupfernagel sits clued to Cavendish rear wheel.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates is in the picture but he is falling back. Everybody else has now lost 15-20 meters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/15.jpg

Under the red kit the situation has changes again, Podium Ambition has lost momentum.

In front at the right side of the road we see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kreder with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Kupfernagel

At the left side still pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Maksimov on par with Cavendish

In the back of the group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan has just passed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Docker.

Further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden seems out of it, at least 10 meters behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/16.jpg

400 meters to the line
The last domestic pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kreder is falling back, we now has 4 sprinters left, fighting for a win in Warszawa

A few 100 meters ago pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Maksimov was leading, but it seems like he has been alone in the wind for too long, now last amongst the four.

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish first, just centimeters behind to his left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Kupfernagel, in the middle pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan a cycle length behind Cavendish

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/17.jpg

200 meters to the line
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan have found a gap between the two now almost side by side with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish, at the left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Kupfernagel has lost just a little.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan wins in Warszawa in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Kupfernagel takes the last podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage2/19.jpg

Behind them it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Maksimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kreder, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Docker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden.
