Tour de Pologne - Stage 1
Tamijo
[HC]Tour de Pologne

Stages 1/7 Golebiewski Karpacz - Jelenia Góra 176,3 km

The Tour start in Karpacz south western Poland not far from the Czech border, a circuit route passing over Karpacz Orlinek 4 times, counting as cat 1 KoM climbs every time, before a relative flat finish in Jelenia Góra. The climb is 8.1 km with an avg of 4.3%

Jelenia Góra is the seat of Jelenia Góra County which include Karpacz (spa/ski resort), Jelenia Góra was established back in the 10th century, today the city has a population of about 85.000 people.

Even though the stage is categorized as hilly, there is more than 20 km of downhill and flat before the line, making it unpredictable. We may see a puncher, a sprinter, a breakaway or a late attacker, taking the win today, so hard to tell.

The Race

177 riders start the race the weather is fine sunny and not much wind. Any race starting downhill is dangerous, with a lot of riders attempting to get away.

We get a crash within the first 3 km, it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Watson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Quevedo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Edet, The pace is not too hard and they close the 2’31 gap easily.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/01.jpg

We see an attempts from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Pavarin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Boaro, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vilela, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Schumacher and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Zielinski but they are brought back within the first 15 km. The next attempt seem better pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vilela, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Boaro and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter build a lead of 2’51 before they start the first climb.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/02.jpg

The is no attacks in the first group to take KoM points, they all work together to keep distance to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Lavery
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Keough

Over the top pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Samwel attacks and join the front group at the end of the downhill, 128 km to the line, distance 2’33

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/05.jpg

Not much happens in this period, the distance is frozen just under 3 minutes. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Samwel wins the intermediate sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Boaro and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Lavoine

The peloton have been led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Newton Foundation up to this point, but now other teams are involved in the chase, especially pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Fablok - Bank BGZ. Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Generali – EDF, they can’t have much faith in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Boaro.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/07.jpg

On the 3rd climb pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter puts more pressure on, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vilela seems to be cooked. It looks like an attempt from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter to take the KoM, clearly being the stronger rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/08.jpg

But mysteriously pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter let go of the front just a few 100 meters before the KoM. The distance to the peloton is 3’16, 60 km to go.

Stage favorite pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar Aziz crashes on the descent, having to close a 2’46 gap on his own.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar makes contact to the rear end of a stretch peloton with 45.3 km to the finish, about 16 km to the climb, hard to say if he will be able to play a role in this stage.

The peloton are starting to put a lot of pressure in the breakaway, the distance is melting. It is mostly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Newton Foundation setting a high pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/11.jpg

The riders in the breakaway starts to attack each other, but it is just the final attempts to claim some extra TV time, before the final climb starts it is all over.

The peloton starts the climb in a very moderate tempo, it seems that there are not any teams willing to take chances; the risk may be too high.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/12.jpg

This continues getting closer and closer to the top, but then finally with just 500 meter to the top, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Barbin attacks, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates right behind him. 21.8 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/13.jpg

More attacks at 13 km to go we have pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates & pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Barbin in front
At 16” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Watson & pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Lavery
At 28” the peloton, everything seems unorganized with no team leading.

Result of the 4th KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Barbin
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Watson

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Pszczolarski
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Sweeting
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ghyselinck

There is constant attacks from the unorganized peloton, first it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi getting very close but not catching the four rider now together in front.

Soon after a group of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Juul-Jensen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Omarsson joins pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi from behind.

4 km to the finish
Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates lead (4 riders)
At 20” Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi
At 1’15 the peloton (168 riders)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/15.jpg

With just 2 km to the line the two groups melt together, with the peloton at about a minute the winner must be in this group, all riders reach the red kite together.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi opens the sprint, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Juul-Jensen a cycle-length behind to his right (seen from the riders).

2-3 meters further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates side by side.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Watson in fifth position

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/16.jpg

With about 200 meter left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Juul-Jensen have closed the cap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi, they are now side by side.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates is also getting closer, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel has lost pace.

Behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Barbin with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Omarsson on wheel have passed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Watson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Pologne/Stage1/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Juul-Jensen takes what must be considered a surprise win in Jelenia Góra.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates take 2nd just in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi, it doesn’t look like that of the TV screens, but that is the official result.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel 4th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Barbin round of top 5.

The peloton loses 55”

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Mwangi Samwel will ride in the KoM jersey tomorrow
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Simon Yates leads the young rider competition
