A long flat afternoon under the Australian summer sun (well, rain) awaits the peloton today. As ever with flat races in the CT, predicting a favourite is difficult - so we’ll avoid doing so.
By the time we’re 50km in, a break of three has formed with an advantage of 3’30 - Partridge, Weber and Lecourt de Billot.
At the halfway point with 101km to go, the break’s advantage would peak at 6 minutes. The peloton would then start to reel them in, and with 67km to go the gap would be back down to 3’30. News reaches us at this time of a fall for Richeze, Manan and Schwarmes - sadly for them they wouldn’t make it back for another 15km, burning precious energy.
With 36km to go, Horton attempts to bridge the 1’00 gap to the break for some unknown reason, but is unable to get more than 15 seconds of advantage.
As the peloton chases down Horton though, a split occurs due to high winds and the increased pace. Ratto, Bogdanovics, Cimolai, Kreder, Corti, Harrison and Bennett are the biggest names caught behind. Richeze meanwhile has dropped further back, feeling the effects of his crash.
Horton is quickly swept up, and with 20km to go the break has only 48 seconds - as Meersman attempts to bridge over to them. The second group is now 2 minutes behind the peloton, so it looks like game over for them.
Meersman reaches the break almost immediately, and Christian joins him in what looks like a lost cause. The winds are now at 47km/h though and likely to cause further havoc.
The peloton closes this down rapidly, with the gap quickly down from 40 seconds to just 15. But this in turn tails off another 20 riders, with Croket the most notable.
With 13km to go it all comes back together, and we look set for a sprint of the 74 remaining riders in the peloton. The dropped group is now over 3 minutes back.
But then with just under 9km to go, Gilbert takes a flier - and the peloton can’t immediately shut his move down.
5km left and Gilbert has 25 seconds. What’s more, the peloton is now down to only 32 riders! Rowe, Castaneda and Vanderaerden have all been caught behind a split here. Havik is drifting off the back now as well, and will also be dropped.
3km left - Gilbert has 40 seconds, surely this is his to lose? The peloton is now just 25 riders, Haller, Van Poppel, Clarke, Granjel Cabrera and Horton the biggest names in there. But now we see a move from the peloton! Tennant and Haller attempt to bridge to Gilbert, will we see the Belgian lose this at the last?
1.5km to go and the juncture is made, as Gilbert has completely faded. Behind, Van Poppel and Verbist can be seen trying to judge to this trio - but Haller must be feeling confident here.
Under the Flamme Rouge and Haller is leading this out from the front. Van Poppel has reached this trio and is attempting to sprint from a long way back, a tense finish awaits us!
500m left and it seems clear Haller has this, with Van Poppel and Tennant contesting 2nd - but the peloton is looming large behind, so can they hang on?
Haller takes an impressive win! He followed the right move and then showed his dominance in the sprint today, now we wait to see who will join him on the podium.
Van Poppel takes 2nd by half a wheel from a very impressive Tennant, while Granjel Cabrera leads home the remaining sprinters. Gilbert will be disappointed only to take 5th after animating the race, but he hangs on ahead of Smukulis, Santambrogio, Verbist, Ford and Clarke who complete the top 10 today.
Bizarrely, PCM decided not to give time gaps for the first 183 riders. I think this was due to riders crossing the line in ones and twos at the end - when Haller crossed the line there was at least 4 minutes between him and the original dropped group.
