It's taken 8 stages to reach the first summit finish, now we see if this is the stage that finally forces some real time gaps to emerge. 17 riders are very much in the GC race right now.
There's a crash at the start, and TV cameras pick up our best young rider Pedro Pablo Pereyra in a war of words with one of the control team riders.
In fact there were others in the crash as well, and the cause was Juodvalkis who crashed of his own accord - from near the front of the peloton - causing others to trip over him.
It also caused a curious situation, as a breakaway chasing Andorra, along with race leader Rujano, have a gap over the main field!
It lasts for a bit, making it a right pain for the crashed riders to chase back on, but eventually Andorra recognise that a day-long breakaway is hardly straight forward and sit up. They go back to the peloton, and the breakaway of 10 riders is allowed to create a lead.
Dmitri Medvedev Eddie Stobart Alexander Rybakov Goldcorp - Nordstrom Rack Enzo Moyano SanCor Geremie Nzeke Xero Racing p/b Octagon Richard Ochoa Quintero Azteca-NBCSN Pedro Sequera Aeropostal Venezuela Ciclismo Mirsamad Poorseyedi Telia-Brussels Airlines Hussein Manfred The Balkan Cycling Project Gregory Hugentobler Sauber Petronas Racing Rob Ruijgh Philips - Continental
The best placed in GC is Sequera, who is 29th, but over 6 minutes down.
There's two stages of the climb today, a long gradual Cat 3 opener, before a flattening out ahead of the steeper rise to the finish.
The break still lead by 3 minutes at the end of the first part and the entire breakaway go for the points, but it is Nzeke, the only rider in the break already with KoM points, who takes 6 more here. 22.5km to go now.
The last climb is 11km, and by this point the break lead by 1 minute. Positive signs of aggressive racing come immediately, as Moschella attacks.
The intermediate sprint is on the climb, sat at 5.5km to go, and sadly not much happens until then. The break maintain a minute's lead on the peloton, Moschella roughly halfway inbetween, and his teammate Sequera picks up 6 relatively meaningless points and seconds.
Moschella joins the front group, as still the peloton waits opportunities. The breakaway sense a victory opportunity, and the man on the move for a 3rd consecutive day is Manfred - and now he attacks! Medvedev follows.
Plenty of GC contenders lined up towards the front of the peloton, none of them wishing to make the first move.
But now here we go, 2.6km to go but better late than never. The breakaway are caught, and picking his way around their tired bodies, and forwards onto an attack is Rafael Valls!
Following him intently are Atapuma, Diaz and Bardet.
Then comes Mannion, Pozzo, Pozzovivo, De Marchi, and Anton.
There's a gap behind the first 4 attackers!
De Marchi, Mannion and Anton still fighting to stay involved and riding side by side at last, Pozzo and Pozzovivo come next.
Into the final kilometre and Valls is pressing on - he looks to have cracked Diaz.
It's a powerful pace, and then in a final acceleration as the line nears, Valls takes the stage win! Time bonuses for sure, and time gains on the road too.
Bardet finishes 2nd, while Diaz recovers to pip Atapuma for the valuable 3rd place time bonuses. Bardet loses 11 seconds on the line, the other two lose 19.
At 28 seconds, Anton, De Marchi and Cataldo lead in a group of 14 riders. Mannion takes 8th, while Poorseyedi from the breakaway is 9th!
A bigger gap emerges behind, with a larger group finishing at 1'28. It's a very poor defence of the leaders jersey for Rujano, finishing down in 62nd. An all round bad day for Andorra too, as Solis was in this time-losing group as well.
The other leading Venezuelan, Roman, is also here, as 17 contenders become 14 - but our contenders are now separated by 48 seconds, rather than 24.
Rafael Valls takes the race lead, just 7 seconds ahead of Romain Bardet. Anton places 3rd at 28 seconds, in front of fellow time bonuses winners Diaz and Cataldo - with Atapuma into 6th, in front of Penasa. The other 7 together at 48.
Salleh keeps the points jersey lead but Valls is into 3rd, and only 10 points behind. Valls is also on the up in the King of the Mountains competition, and is the new leader on 23 points. Bardet has 22, Rujano and Serrano remain on 18.
The leading U25 riders all finished together, Pereyra was not hurt by his crash, and while Telia were the strongest team on the day - gaining time on the rest - they are only 3rd overall. Aeropostal open up a 9 second lead on the Balkan Cycling Project. Despite a flat stage blunder costing Karnulin his GC race, the Balkans have Destribois flying their flag in 13th overall, and are placing themselves well on the climbs. Aeropostal's climbing depth is starting to show though.
