The last flat stage of the race, but those who have done their research will know that a breakaway won this stage last year. Henrique Avancini took the win, but with the sprinters right on his tail. He certainly won't repeat that though, he is without a team this season.
Petili, Vila, Nieves, Kaislavuo, McCutcheon and Juarez tried, but were chased down. Three had got clear ahead of them, and the peloton were keen for only those 3 to be the ones.
Tormod Jacobsen Statoil Pro Cycling Owain Doull Eddie Stobart David Per Philips - Continental
First crash in the race! Hochmann, along with Jiriakov and Haavardsholm. Geoghegan Hart drops back, and they make it back to the pack.
But on the climb Hochmann is dropped again, and is in for a long day.
The break battle it out for the KoM points, and Per takes the 6 for 1st. It only puts him joint 5th in the standings, so not much meaning in it. Jacobsen would then win the sprint.
On the descent, another crash in the peloton. Dahlberg, Vuillermoz, Moyano, Schlegel, Britton and Cedric Lebris - who is forced to abandon.
With 20km to go, Per attacks the break and goes solo!
Action at all ends of the race. The wind has picked up again and the peloton is splitting! This time many of the climbers are immediately caught out. Of those who made the front group yesterday, this includes Destribois, Suaza, Bardet, Rujano, Godoy, Mannion, Pereyra, Roman, Lemus Davila, Prado and Shaw. Balkan and Sauber are the ones leading the peloton chase with a 1'30 deficit to Per and now 15km to go.
Per is fighting hard, and holds on to that lead through the intermediate sprint and into the final 10km.
Sauber can't be accused of giving him an easy ride, they are really pushing, and the peloton is now down to 35. Dropped also now are: Salinas, Khripta, Pozzovivvo, Solis, Kebede, Manfredi and Atapuma, amongst others.
Reddit cling on at the back, with Anacona and Kip. It looks like the only ones in here, from the front group on Stage 4, are Anton, Finetto, Valls, Penasa, Cataldo, De Marchi, Bennett, Moschella and Anacona. Is this a key race selection in action?
Kip is soon shelled out too, as Dowling of Wiggle helps out Othman and Hugentobler of Sauber Petronas.
5km to go, and that lead is coming down! The Slovenian Per now only has 43 seconds.
We are seeing the relays turn into sprint trains as Finetto follows Dowling, and Salleh follows Othman. Other sprinters making the cut are Mezgec, Angarita, Haussler, Sonnery, Kreder, Delage, Andriato and Martinez.
They're going to have to go early but initially there's some reluctancy.
Salleh realises and does launch his sprint to go charging after Per. It's not only the stage on his mind, but with his two closest points jersey rivals dropped, this is his chance to score as much as possible - and hope it can hold off the climbers later in the race.
Final kilometre for Per!
Sonnery is coming after Salleh, but Haussler hasn't left his lead out man yet.
It's going to be a Stage 5 breakaway win yet again! David Per wins the stage for Philips - Continental!
Haussler's strategy works well for him to take 2nd place, as he passes Salleh on the line. A deserved 3rd place and Points jersey lead for the Malaysian though. Mezgec, Angarita, Sonnery, Kreder and Gatto follow.
A group of just 21 remained, with Valls, Bennett, Penasa. Cataldo, Anton and De Marchi there from the GC riders. There seems to be a clear gap in front of 22nd place Nieves.
But it isn't given. And it looks to be a let off for all of the team leaders in the end, as the Top 82 are credited with the same time. So no changes today - but it is into the mountains next!
