It`s the day after the puncheurs took over the GC with Schreurs being the new rider in the lead.
Today might be another for the sprinters but the finish is tricky as some clear uphill parts on the final 3 kilometers make it difficult and a very good train might be vital to stay ahead of others.
Top favourite on such final must be Kump. Kreder, Theuns, Modolo or Ulissi, Kubobki, Kadri though are here to beat him.
Surprisingly the pace was incredibly high until the early sprint but then no sprinter went for the points and instead the next group of riders just attacking got those.
This group also form the break of the day:
Olsson
Daspuntsag
Ruffoni
Le Roux
Kamberaj
Chances to grab the KoM jersey at the end of the race are slim but anyway some riders go for it. Olsson ahead of Daspuntsag and Le Roux.
Those three are 22nd - 24th in the GC with just a bit more than 2min. Hence not that undangerous.
Bigger news behind though as this short Cat.4 indeed led to a huge selection.
94 riders in the peloton, which means almost as many are missing.
59 riders in a field 2min behind and another 26 riders in the last group another 90s.
But who is missing. Mainly weak puncheurs it seems but also sprinters and their support riders:
Nelson
Guillén
Serebriakov
Itami
Colbrelli
Canola
Waeytens might be the best puncheur behind but he might not care after losing time in a crash already.
Barrio and Palini are others of which the later actually looks injured.
Then some riders decently placed around the 20th such as Mas or Jallays.
With Fablok mainly and Generali as well working hard, it`s difficult for those to make it back.
And even worse another crash.
Paulinho and Klemme
appear to be the biggest names on the ground.
Lavery as 14th in the GC the best placed while Bole might have been a rider for today.
The others are:
Skjerping
Cimolai
Wallays
Lietaer
Vachon
Sagan
Rovny even has to abandon the race being injured.
Really a calm day for Orange as they never really had to work today.
Right now it`s Isostar for Kump and Kraftwerk for Cavendish. With 7,5km they still have 1min to the break as all the chaos didn`t really help them.
Though with Fablok working most during the stage, their train looks less confident, i.e. as stage 1 winner Guardini was used a lot for chasing after the split.
3,6km and it`s just 15s now. Almost caught.
But it was rather chaotic at the front to find the support riders in the train and hence the pace dropped a little bit again.
In the end the two teams working most recently got the right wheels and now go onto the last kilometers.
Irvine - Flügel - Park - Cavendish
Bazhkou - Jans - Mansilla - Kump (though a bit disturbed by the Kraftwerk train).
Then stage 2 winner Modolo once more with the right feel for the situation being just behind Cavendish in a perfect position and also Kruopis isn`t far behind trying to get his position.
Kreder, Ulissi, Kuboki, Goss, Mohs, Reinhardt with a small gap but trying to use the short downhill for joining and then Pelucchi, Theuns, Vanoverschelde, Favilli also somehow in the mix.
But the breakaway never gave up and hence still got a small gap. 2,3km and the last uphill basically starts.
Daspuntsag and Le Roux not having a real chance when Olsson accelerated with Ruffoni and Kamberaj behind.
Modolo being the first rider to get nervous by that gap and starts his sprint early. Still 1,8km to go but his acceleration helped him to open a gap. Can he take yet another win?
1,2km and now Kamberaj being the fastest of the break and going solo.
Behind Modolo has joined the remaining break riders while the peloton still waiting as no sprinter wants to go into the wind too early on that 3% uphill sprint.
It takes until the 600m mark when both Kump and Reinhardt start the sprint.
The gap to Modolo is tiny and surely the Italian has spent a lot of energy already.
But also Kamberaj is still in front trying to take the win.
Meiji also decently placed with both Kuboki and Kinoshita in the first rows while Kruopis, Ulissi, Gautier, Pelucchi follow with Cavendish and Schreurs behind. Clearly not a pure sprinter finish.
400m and Kamberaj back in his saddle. He has almost no energy left and also Modolo not looking good.
Kump just passing him and also Reinhardt shows his skills today.
And indeed the sprinters timed it perfectly. On the last meters Kamberaj lost the fight against the stage favourites and Isostar timed it perfectly today.
Kump with a brilliant stage win while Reinhardt probably can be happy with 2nd today on such difficult finish.
Modolo still on 3rd and Kamberaj in fact just missed out on the podium as 4th. Really the unlucky one today.
Cavendish and Goss next just didn`t have the legs for such finish with Kadi, Pelucchi, Mohs and Theuns next.
Yet again a perfect finish for Generali but their riders didn`t make the maximum out of it. Same for Meiji I guess.
The unlucky crash victims today lose ~5min with the dropped riders even further behind and hence have a good gap now to attack on the remaining 2 stages.
