Two (more or less) sprint stages behind us. Now time for the GC riders to get back the lost time against the tougher sprinters.
The favourite list for today is basically same as for the GC. That said having a decent sprint helps as the finish is after the steep Corkscrew Climb.
De Vos
Bazhkou
Walker
Costa
are todays breakaway. All four have already lost a few minutes and hence not a big danger GC wise but decent puncheurs. Smart move to try it via the breakaway today.
Later on with a bit less than 50km to go Sanikwathi goes for the mid stage attack. Not really the kind of rider you`d expect to do this move but surely an experience for him to make.
Not a big surprise though that this attempt didn`t last very long.
30km to go and just 80s left.
Orange, Indosat, MOL, Generali and Fablok all with helpers in front. Not a big surprise as those are the teams with top favourites. Others such as Meiji or Kraftwerk still waiting.
13km and Walker goes solo. He got rid of his former companions and is soon to reach the high speed descent before the Corkscrew section. 45s for him to the dup behind as De Vos lost contact already even more and another 30s to the peloton.
6,4km for Walker! Still 80s for him as the descent didn`t see much changes time wise.
But now the Corkscrew Climb starts and sees a height difference of almost 400m on 3km length making it almost 8% in average.
Good spot to attack surely and Ulissi immediately doing so. It wasn`t a very active first two stages for Generali and hence good to see him being aggressive here.
Behind Froome, Schreurs and Kinoshita following quickly.
Khalilikhosroshani surprisingly next. Maybe more or less pacing only for Anuar Aziz while Di Maggio and Gautier also go out of their saddle.
Nicely done by Walker. The gap quickly was lost but he just saved himself over the top and hence taking the KoM lead this way.
Behind Ulissi, Froome, Schreurs, Kinoshita and Di Maggio. Those made it into the first group with Gautier being just a few seconds behind.
5km only left and several riders missed out and now need to react.
Flügel is the first to accelerate. The 2016 winner surely wasn`t expecting to lose time here.
Kump and Anuar Aziz right behind him with Watson, Khalilikhosroshani and Mohoric following. But it`s 20-40s already to Gautier and the top group.
That said also 30s to the bigger peloton behind including.
Still in there Kadri and Paulinho to attack now as also the riders of Euskaltel, Lierse, UBS, Novatek and obviously GC leader Modolo.
2km to go. Ulissi not getting much support. Hence the Italian is doing everything in the wind. Surely the strongest sprinter of those but also the biggest worker since his attack to initiate the group.
Not supporting Ulissi surely favoured Gautier to make it back and also Walker still is with them. Now with 1km to go the sprint really starts.
And Ulissi quickly struggles after all his work.
Instead Schreurs now going into the lead with Froome and Kinoshita behind.
And the Orange leader takes the stage. No chance for the others to come around.
Froome with a good sprint moving him into 2nd and hence important bonus seconds while Ulissi at least got ahead of Kinoshita for smaller seconds. Strong ride in general for him and surely the stage win if other teams had supported him on the final 7km.
Kinoshita and Di Maggio without bonus seconds but within todays first group, which already is important seeing the time gaps.
Gautier just being rated s.t. as well while Walker lost 18s in the end. Strong ride by him but GC wise no chance to really get something out of it. But KoM lead for now.
Good ride as well by Kump. 8th in the end and just 28s behind Schreurs still having decent chances for a high GC with 2 more chances for him to gain time.
Flügel right behind him and surely lost unnecessarily time today.
Anuar Aziz leads in the 48s group in which Mohoric, Watson and Khalilikhosroshani are surely small surprises for their teams as they did okay today to finish ahead of the "peloton".
Last years stage winner Caruso then at 1'24 including Waeytens, Lavery, Zingle and also GC leader Modolo.
Still ahead of the next incl. Reichenbach, Paulinho, Vogt, Mehr-Wenige or Klemme as big losers today.
The GC lead goes over to Schreurs as gaps were big enough to distance the sprinters out of the ~40s danger zone with 2 sprints to come.
Also to mention that Pokidov of the Novatek team did not end todays stage.
