2nd day in Down Under and with Guardini surprising yesterday kind of, it`s a tough day for him to defend the jersey.
The finish in Stirling is quite hilly despite the flat rating and surely favours other sprinters a lot more. If the pace is really high even gaps are not impossible.
Top favourite today surely is Kump and also Kreder showed good form already.
Bookies also rate the Generali duo high in Ulissi and Theuns while Modolo as other sprinters and lots of decently fast puncheurs are also listed.
Blue-White again a very popular colour in the peloton it seems. Four riders in those form todays breakaway:
Olsson
Le Roux
Daspuntsag
and yet again
Jallays, who really justifies his fighting spirit so far.
That said Indosat`s producer still working on red jerseys and apparently they were shipped too late.
The early Cat.4 was less of interest to all as there was no chance for anybody to get the lead. Still some attacks and Le Roux in the end went for the 6 points with Olsson and Daspuntsag next.
Fablok, Generali, Meiji worked a lot early on and reduced the gap of maximum 6min to under 2min again.
Then it`s Orange, Isostar and Ferrero with their colours in the first rows. Schreurs apparently willed to give it a go while Kump and Modolo are the obvious riders aiming this stage.
22km left and it`s the 2nd of 3 passings on the Stirling finish area. 1min only for the four in front.
Awful bad luck for Euskaltel`s leader and last year`s top10 GC and stage winner Caruso. He punctures with 8km to go just before the final uphill section starts.
Not ideal neither for him that Ferrero have accelerated a lot now with Walker and Toelhoek to prepare the sprint for Modolo.
It`s also the time the breakaway is caught.
Guardini though still in the 5th position at the moment and obviously willed to show himself again.
Incredible leadouts by both Ferrero and Isostar today.
Mansilla - Jans - Kump obviously is great sprint power with decent hill strength. Bole of VMP with a perfect position next to them.
On the other side a different tactic. Ferrero with Pavarin - Barbin - Modolo. Less sprint speed in comparison but better hill quality. Behind them Schreurs and Anuar Aziz with great positioning.
Guardini, Pelucchi and Nelson following with a gap but clearly struggling on the uphill sections.
Not much to see from the expected Generali men.
The waves and in especially the uphill parts really favour the Ferrero train a lot. Isostar might have the speed for the final kilometer but is lacking from 5-1 to go.
Still Pavarin with the leadout and Barbin/Modolo sitting behind him nicely.
Meanwhile Kump already partly in the wind trying to not lose contact.
Final kilometer. Only uphill left and hence a slowish but tough sprint.
Pavarin totally done for the day but Barbin now fresh in the wind while most other sprinters already have been for a while. And Modolo even in 2nd position only.
Pelucchi, Bole and Jans-Kump next with Schreurs and Anuar Aziz clearly not having the sprint speed.
700m and Barbin perfectly prepares the finish for Modolo, who is now going around a bit behind him.
Then the group of good positioners while Generali and the GC riders in the 3rd group.
Only 200m left and Modolo having the gap, Barbin prepared for him. But the fastest clearly is Kump now.
But it`s enough for the Italian. After yesterdays bad luck for the Ferrero leaders, today is a nice compensation and a brilliant win.
Kump the "unlucky" 2nd but in the end going for the wrong kind of leadout might have been key.
3rd and 4th for Schreurs and Anuar Aziz. While saying they don`t have the sprint speed, they had a rather decent speed for longer and hence positioning delivers the first bonus seconds for a "pure" puncheur.
Bole, Pelucchi next ahead of the Ferrero leadout duo.
Disappointing day for Generali surely with Ulissi only 12th on a stage perfectly suiting him or his team mate Theuns. Next up the real test for the puncheurs though.
Also Guardini, who was well placed until 5km to go, lost and finished 61st in the end. Hence Modolo takes over the GC lead.
Caruso unfortunately lost time on his own against the fast peloton and is 3'31 down and hence might go for another stage win as seen last year already.
