Tour Down Under - Stage 1
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0011.jpg

This years opener goes from Prospect to Lyndoch. Last year pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Vanoverschelde won this stage. This year the opponents are even stronger and hence it wouldn`t only be a surprise again but even a sensation if he can repeat this.
The top favourites are obviously the star sprinters pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Kump.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0014.jpg

The award for the first attacker of the race and hence the stage race season goes to one of the youngest in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Biermans followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Vallee.

But several others decided to do the same and it was up to 10 riders of mainly young talents and outsider teams. Hence no chance as Indosat decided it was too dangerous.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0020.jpg

In the end the early Cat.2 was a big reason to join the break and hence no group really has formed yet. Only 2 riders are ahead of the peloton at the moment of which pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Svab takes the glory of winning the KoM today and hence wearing the shirt for at least 1 day now.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Sanikwathi just a bit behind him while Tolhoek, Zaraliev and Khalilikhosroshani (already dislike those names for reporters) took small points while working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Svab then was for a while solo as Sanikwathi was only there for the mountain sprint. But after some kilometers he was joined by young pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Mas, who was already part of the very early stage attempt and more experienced pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Jallays as probably strongest in this group.

This trio was allowed to create couple of minutes in between while the GC/sprinter teams worked namely Fablok, Indosat, Kraftwerk, Generali.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0029.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0031.jpg

No fun with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Svab today. After the KoM points he also takes the two intermediates easily. Twice Mas and Jallays only saw his back.

So far a perfect day for Isostar, which must feel good in that situation seeing they have a top rider today and for the GC but the freedom to save energy behind with Svab in the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0037.jpg

It took until the 5km mark when Jallays was caught as last rider. The sprinter teams form their trains and no big surprise to see Kraftwerk vs. Fablok.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Park - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kreder
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Cohen - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Mohs - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Guardini

Surprisingly both with their main man in the middle.

Indosat also trying to form a train but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss a bit ahead of his 2 team mates Colbrelli and Nathegi.
Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Vanoverschelde, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Guillén, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Serebriakov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Pelucchi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Kump decently placed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0055.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Theuns, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Itami found their way to the front and with a bit over 3km to go it`s still wide open.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0061.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson in the Aussie NC jersey decides to go early to surprise the stronger sprint trains and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Theuns immediately follows him in the slipstream.

Fablok now a bit ahead of Kraftwerk with Guardini starting to move around Mohs for a late final leadout.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0064.jpg

Same with Kreder and Cavendish now. But neither Mohs nor Cavendish are right behind their late leadouts and a small gap for both of them.

Meanwhile Nelson still in front but just meters ahead of Guardini while Theuns can`t follow that fast pace.

Kump, Pelucchi, Guillen or Itami with good positions as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0067.jpg

500m and Nelson has done it all. No chance for him with the others now passing him. Guardini first and his gap is rather big still.
Behind a lot closer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0069.jpg

And wow. He really makes it. Not sure if planned or just happened. But it worked out perfectly for Fablok as Mohs comes over the line in 2nd making it a 1-2.
Then 3rd for Kreder ahead of Cavendish. So also Kraftwerk with a decent result but probably they had wanted to win today.

5th goes to Itami as best of the rest ahead of Goss and Guillen. Then Kump not able to gain bonus seconds but he is with the fastest and ahead of Bouhanni and Pelucchi to complete the top10 while Nelson after his brave sprint dropped down to 11th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0075.jpg

Unfortunately also some not so nice news as there was a late crash with 5km to go. Two teams got hit the hardest which are Ferrero and Lierse.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Quevedo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Barbin crashed first and many other riders couldn`t go around and also hit the tarmac. Those are:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Palini
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Waeytens
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Mutsumine
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Hatanaka
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Von Hoff
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Berdos
and some others.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Tanovitchii and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Morales even had to give up the race at this point already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PCT/TdU/mg2017_tdu_01_PCM0073.jpg

For the others and in especially Waeytens, Barbin and Palini this means losing 3:10 min already and all their GC hopes.
