The PCT season begins with the Down Under Classic - an unpredictable race at the best of times.

It would take a while for a break to form, with Le Roux (INO) eventually being the man who would get away and create a small lead with about 60km to go.

10km later and 3 riders have joined him up front - Eaton (NEW), Frohlinger (BGC) and Biermans (LPU).

With 23km to go the gap was slowly melting away, with the 4 riders outfront just 1’20 ahead of the Orange and Valio lead peloton.

A few riders fall off the back of the peloton, but nobody notable - whisperings of a crash are heard but the cameras don’t pick it up. 15km to go and the break still has a minute, but surely they can’t hold on today?

We have 10km left and suddenly huge news comes from the peloton! 3 big name riders are down and out of contention - Daniel (SSC), Van Heerden (ERS) and Ewan (T3A). Devastating for them and their teams.

And then we see another, larger fall, on these treacherous roads! Reinhardt (UBS) and Guillen (TIC) are the biggest names hitting the ground here.

With 5.5km to go we enter the final circuit with news that Ewan and Van Heerden have elected to abandon. The break are in sight, but the gap is still 31 seconds - not what the peloton would have wanted to happen!

3.7km to go and the catch is made though, and now Valio, Indosat, SPAR and Orange are setting up for the sprint. (Note: The Valio wheels glitched out - they seemed fine at the start but apparently disappeared).

Under 3km to go and we can see 3 clear lines forming - one for Kennaugh, Guerao and Goss. Valio have fallen apart, with Lo Cicero nowhere to be seen. And Van Asbroeck and Holloway are hitching rides on the trains.

2km left and suddenly Lo Cicero is back with his Valio teammates. Vantomme, Silvestre and Itami have now also entered the scene.

Under the Flamme Rouge and it all blows apart as the lead sprinters launch - and catch lapped riders. Guerao and Goss both sit nicely, while Lo Cicero has lost Manninen and is trying to reach back onto his wheel. Vantomme leads a gaggle of sprinters on the right.

400m to go and Suryadi is lapped as his teammate Guerao surges towards the finish in
front of Goss - will we see a home winner?

Guerao looks set to edge it, but we’ll have a photo finish for second - will Goss hold on, or will Lo Cicero or Vantomme pip him?

The Spaniard takes the win! Goss clings onto 2nd ahead of Vantomme in 3rd. Silvestre is an impressive 4th ahead of a disappointed Lo Cicero, with Van Asbroeck, Itami, Holloway, an abjectly performing Kennaugh and Maksimov completing the top 10.
