Welcome again in Costa Rica's capital city San José, where local fans will be surely cheering for local superstar Andrey Amador.
The biggest favourites are Amador, Alarcon, two Americans Phinney and Dombrowski and team Colombia.
Today's breakaway of the day includes just 2 riders. These two are:
Meier
Rodriguez
Their maximum advantage over the main field was around 6 minutes, but in the end they were without any chance against strong teams.
With just one lap and climb remaining with 35 km to go, we have no real action between the favourites so far. There are still 43 riders in the peloton.
The only better climbers who dropped are these who did some great work as domestiques like Salinas or Anacona.
And here we go! The real actions starts as Monsalve attacks!
Monsalve quickly gainst around 40 seconds of an advantage.
As the pace in the peloton drops and nobody wants to do a major work for other favourites it is Amador who decides it is his time to attack. The riders trying to immediately try to follow his attack are:
Úran
Nazaret
Campero
Dombrowski
They all create a chasing group.
After a while Dombrowski decides to put in another attack!
No rider was able to react.
Here is a perfect picture of the situation with 16 kms to go with just a few remaining on the climb:
The current leading rider of the race is Monsalve
The first chasing rider is Dombrowski 30 seconds back
Around 45 seconds behind is a group of Amador, Úran, Nazaret and Campero.
Another half minute back is a group of 6 riders of all remiaing riders from the peloton where Carapaz is doing all the pace, while he has Phinney, Alarcon, Rujano, Henao Montoya and Duarte all on his wheel.
All other riders including riders like Quintana or Eastman are further minute down the road or even more.
And Amador attacks! Only Úran at least tries to stay with him, but even he is not successful to do so.
Here is a perfect view of the situation on the top of the climb:
Dombrowski almost catches Monsalve
Amador is 45 seconds back with Úran a few seconds back behind him.
And furter behind we have a group of Nazaret and Campero who are just catched by Phinney, Alarcon and Henao Montoya as they drop Carapaz and Duarte in the process.
Dombrowski creates a leading group with Monsalve really soon.
Amador is coming closer to the front duo when coming back to San José, but with less than 5 kms to go, he still has 20 seconds disadvantage.
The situation with 1.5 kms remaining is clear, it is going to be between Dombrowski and Monsalve in the final sprint.
Behind them, it is Amador losing ground a little bit with Úran still following him, while Phinney shows up from nowhere after a really great downhill while going really fast!
But Monsalve is empty and can't really do a fast sprint, Dombrowski wins easily!
And Phinney almost catches Amador, but it is the home hero who just takes the bronze medal!
Úran comes in comfortably 5th.
The sprint for 6th wins Alarcon, who edges out Henao Montoya and Campero.
Nazaret takes a nice 9th place for Brazil, while Duarte wins the sprint for 10th place over Carapaz and Solis.
The winner of the day - Joseph Dombrowski.
