Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres off the southeast coast of the African continent. And it is also a place of this year's African Championships. Today, it is time for road race.
The biggest favourites are surely Eritrean stars Kudus and Berhane, but other riders like Meintjes, Ndayisenga or veteran Samwel will surely try to beat them.
After many unsuccessful attempts, the riders that finally got away from the peloton are:
Chipongo
Monese
R.Janse van Rensburg
Ajibade
Sendeku
Adriamihajanarivo
Hoareau
Peloton not allowing them to build a bigger lead than just 4 minutes. Eritrean team is doing mostly all the work.
Things start to get interesting when 30 kms before finish both Belgasem and Girdlestone crash. The peloton has just 61 riders at the moment.
Here is the situation with 25 km to go:
In the front there are still last remaining riders from the breakaway - R.Janse van Rensburg, Monese and Chipongo.
Behind them is the group of favourites, where Rwandan domestiques are doing all the major job. The group now has just 18 riders. These are:
Uwizeyimana
Hadi
Meintjes
Berhane
Venter
Seibeb
Augustyn
Anguilet
Ndayisenga
Jim
Kudus
Eyob
Samwel
Teklehaimanot
Grmay
Niyonshuti
Baz
Kimeli
Only behind them we can see a group with riders like Seboka, Kebede, J.Janse van Rensburg, Reguigui. The steepest part of the climb is coming up soon.
A while later Kebede, Reguigui and Kamzong are able to bridge the gap to the group of favourites. Seboka was able to get there as well, but almost immediately drops again together with Eyob.
The situation changes quite a lot after a while. Ndayisenga and Kudus get up from their saddle, make the pace of the group way faster and we have a lot of riders dropped. Baz, Kebede, Hadi, Uwizeyimana, Niyonshuti, Kamzong, Kimeli, Grmay, Jim and Reguigui are now all dropped as well.
And Kudus attacks, but he has Ndayisenga and Anguilet on his wheel.
But after a while nobody can't keep the pace of Kudus. Only his team mate Berhane trying to catch him now, as Ndayisenga is visibly empty and Meintjes is only pacing himself from behind.
On the top of the climb Kudus leads. Berhane is around 30 seconds behind him, as Meintjes almost catched him climbing up on his own pace.
Ndayisenga got himself to a deep trouble and is around 1.30 behind Meintjes at the moment. Another 30 seconds back is Anguilet who has around 40 seconds advantage on group of 10 with Seibeb, Venter, Samwel, Grmay, Reguigui, Teklehaimanot, Kebede, Augustyn, R.Janse van Rensburg and Kamzong.
In the downhill Meintjes is quickly able to catch Berhane, but both of them are quickly getting closer and closer to Kudus as well!
And they caught him!
Behind them, Ndayisenga is going for a 4th place, but Venter and Teklehaimanot attacked from the bigger group and quickly overtake Anguilet. Augustyn and Kamzong are not too far behind them.
Everything is going to be decided in the final sprint...
But it is Kudus who wins easily! Berhane completes 1-2 for both Eritrean team and Eritel. Meintjes did not have enough power for a sprint, but a bronze medal is surely a nice result for him.
Behind them Ndayisenga finishes 4th, but it is Augustyn who comes from behind to win the sprint for 5th, when he edges out Teklehaimanot. Venter finishes 7th not too far behind them. Kamzong, Anguilet and Grmay complete the top 10.
