Intro
I've started playing PCM '07 at the beginning of this year. After playing a few months with Agritubel and 1 season with Panaria, I installed the PCM Spain 2007 database and played 1 season with Saunier Duval (all on normal difficulty). In the mean time I surfed the internet for tips and tricks. And after reading or scrolling through a lot of the stories on this forum, I wanted to start my own story. When reading Crommy's guide he talked about it is important to have fun with the story. Well at that time I was enjoying my career with Konica Minolta (still the PCM Spain database) my first career on a hard difficulty setting. I thought why not tell that story although I'm already at the end of the first season. That means that I won't have any screenshots until season 2.
Currently (and for the next half year) I'm working on my graduation project. That is why I don't have a lot of time to play PCM and update a story. But it is an nice "stress" relief and we'll see how far I get. So here it goes.....
Looking back at the first season
December 2006
I was very surprised to get a call from a South African team, but after hearing what they had to say I got interested and decided to fly to South Africa and sit down at the table with the team management.
They told me that after a disappointing 2006 season the team wanted to make a few drastic chances.
They had already talked with the sponsor, who agreed to raise the budget to 2 million euro's with as most important condition that I if the team didn't finish in the top 20 of the continental circuit they would step out of the cycling sport at the end of the season. That would almost certainly mean the end of the team.
The management wanted to make it an all African team. First sign young African talent and in the coming seasons persuade the best African riders to join the team. This way they wanted to become one of the big continental teams within a few years. All non African riders where sold last year and they managed to keep a few youngster. Only losing John Lee Augustyn (South Africa's biggest talent) to Barloworld, which was a big disappointment for the team. But they where about to sign a handful of other African talents and saw in me the manager/coach that could help to realize this vision.
After this info I could only make one decision. GO FOR IT!!

January 2007
When I started my job in January I had some talks with the sponsor and the team management and decided on what would be our season goals.
As you can see our first goal was already at the end of January and the second one would shortly follow. So as preparation I managed to get a budget to take the team to Malaysia on a training camp for a week. This would also be a good opportunity for the team to get the know each other. At the end of the week I would decide which riders would go to Gabon for our first goal.
By that time the team for the 2007 season also got his final shape. Below is the team roster. The first 9 riders where already part of the team. The second 9 where signed in January just in time to join us to go to Malaysia.

Before I start telling about last year results, I first want to introduce some of my riders.
First 4 sprinters.
Juan van Heerden: We are very happy Juan signed with us. At only 20 years of age he is a talented sprinter, who has the potential to win classics. To achieve that he has to develope his hill and/or cobblestone skills. But he already has the potential to win some of the more difficult sprint stages.
Daryl Impey: Daryl also is a big sprint talent, but a few years older then Juan. Daryl is more of a sprinter for the stage races. With his quick recovery and impressive acceleration he will score good results even in the later stages of a stage race.
Pieter Seyffert: Pieter was already part of the team, but we see in him someone who can be a great lead out for Juan or Daryl. And even get a great result of his own if he manages to start the sprint in a good position.
Rodney Green: Rodney is already 32 years of age and gets dropped at every obstacle, but at this moment we're prepared to keep him around to be a mentor for our young talents and we're convince he can still come up with some top finishes.

4 stage racers
David George: David is the only rider we signed that is not under 25 anymore. With his 30 years his is even our oldest rider besides Rodney Green. But at this moment he is our best rider and he most provide us with some top overall finishes.
Chris Froome: Chris is our biggest talent for stage races. This season he will need to gain experience, but we're convinced he will become a very wanted rider within a few years.
Jay Thompson & Dan Craven: Jay and Dan will mainly help out David and our sprinters, but we're curious how they will develop them selfs and if they will earn the leadership in one of the smaller races.

4 other riders I want to mention
Rafaâ Chtioui: Rafaâ is a big time trail talent. Besides that he is a very all round rider. He has a decent sprint, which makes him a perfect rider to sent in the break away and also to serve as a lead out man for our sprinters.
Hassan Ben Nasser: Hassan is our hilly classic rider for the future. It will be probably take a few season before he becomes a real contender for classic win, but we will already give him the leadership in a few one day races.
Tiaan Kannemeyer: Tiaan is a great helper and fighter for in the mountains. With 28 years old he is a bit to old for our futher plans, but at the moment he is one of our better riders.
Abdelkader Belmokhtar: Ab is a great fighter and will pick up a lot of KOM points and even jerseys for us. Perhaps he can even develop into a rider for the hilly classics.

La Tropicale Ammisa Bongo (16-21 January)
This 6 day race features a prologue, 1 hilly stage and 4 flat stages. It was not only our first races of the season, but also our first goal. I knew it would be hard to preform well here after such a short preparation, but this is one of the very few African races of the season. That is why the sponsors wanted a stage win.
I send David (George) for the overall, Bassie (Abdelbasset Hannachi) and Jay (Thompson) for the break away. Our sprint would be provided by Pieter (Seyffert), Rodney (Green) and Herman (Fouché).
As I feared we didn't win any stages. We even didn't manage to get a top 10 result in any of the 6 stages. The only rider that showed some form was Bassie, who was part of the breakaway in a few stages and won us our first price of the season: The KOM jersey!!

Tour down Under (17-21 January)
I was surprised that we managed to get invited to the 'Tour Down Under'.
It was a nice experience for our riders, but of course we didn't get any results (you can't aspect miracles in the first HC race).
There was however 1 South African who did very well. Sadly he wasn't one of our riders. Robert Hunter (Barloworld) first managed to win the 'Tour Down Under Classic' (16 January) and then basically dominated the 'Tour Down Under' with two stage wins, three 2nd place finishes and the sprinters jersey. The only thing that went wrong for him was that his team didn't manage to catch Nicki Sörensen (CSC) in the final stage with as a result that Hunter missed out on the overall victory by 21 seconds.
Hunter had already been contacted by the team. He likes what we're trying to accomplish, but he won't be an option for next season. We also can't pay what Barloworld is asking for him.

For the Tour de San Luis (23-28 january) six of our riders where in Argentina. Abdelbasser Hannachi was showing great form by again taking the KOM jersey.
Meanwhile I booked an early trip, for me and six riders, to Malaysia for again a trainings camp in preparations of one of our biggest seasons goals, which was also in Malaysia:
Le Tour de Langkawi (2-11 january).
I was very hopeful that we could get some good results this time. Winning a stage wouldn't be easy, but we had 10 stages to achieve our sponsors goal (a stage win). There where no TT's or hilly stages, stage 3 and 8 where mountain stages and the rest where more or less flat.
Langkawi is a HC race, so there where 5 ProTour teams (Bouygues Telecom, Credit Agricole, FDJ, AG2R and Unibet.com), Panaria (with Sella and Pozzovivo) and Tinkoff (with Petrov)
Our team consisted out of;
David George (The man for the overall classification)
Daryl Impey & Juan van Heerden (Our big hopes for a sprint victory)
Chris Froome, Rafaa Chtioui & Tiaan Kannemeyer (as helpers and for the break away)
The team had an outstanding 1,5 weeks and got some great results, but...

The closed calls where;
stage 4 (Juan with the first podium place of the season)
stage 6 (Daryl won the sprint of the peloton, but 2 riders stayed ahead of the bunch.)
stage 7 (Tiaan was in a successful break away, but couldn't out sprint Cyrille Monnerais.)
stage 8 (A brilliant performance by David. Only losing to Emanuele Sella, which he can't be ashamed off. It also resulted in the 2nd place overall.)
Although we didn't get the win, the sponsor were very happy with the results. Which also placed the team in the top 10 of the continental circuit.

The rest of February we didn't get any results. This was also because I wanted my best riders to prepare for THE race of the season:
Giro del Capo (6-11 March).
We want to preform at our best in our own country and hopefully get our first victory.

Giro del Capo (6-11 March)
I had great expectation for this race. The team was in top shape, wanted to perform well for the home crowd and finally go home with a stage win.
We were only allowed to enter 5 riders:

This was a 9 km TT. The team immediately showed their great form and we had 3 riders in the top 5, but didn’t manage to get the win.

Again it’s a hilly stage. Despite some attempts nobody is in front when the peloton starts the last 10 km. Just before the foot of the last 3 km long climb to the finish Rafaâ is setting the pace when Chris attacks. David immediately jumps on his wheel. What are they doing? Is this suicide? Chris gives all he has got and Rafaâ tries to hold up the pack, but it seems the two in front will be reeled in very fast. Then David starts his sprint. A few riders try to bride the gap, but they come to late. Finally! First win of the season, first goals achieved and with Chris hanging on to second place it’s 1-2 Kinoca Minolta!

My first season wasn't very long because a took a huge break from half July until about the end of August. So I hope to be up to date within a week and then I'll make screen shots and see how that works out. |

Milano - Torino (10 March)
When I was at the Giro del Capo, Hassen Ben Nasser earned his first continental points by finishing 4th of the bunch in Milano - Torino. That resulted in the 9th place in the race, because 5 world class riders got away and fought it out for the win.

Our main goal for the month of April was the Tour de Georgia (16-22 April) on preparation for this HC stage race we started in two 1 day HC races:
U.S. Open Cycling (7 April)
David showed he was still in good shape and that he is our best rider at the moment. Great 3th place in a race where CSC deserved the win.
