Tour de Langkawi - Stage 6
SportingNonsense
This hilly stage is not to be underestimated

David Bernabeu attacked immediately in order to take the first KoM points of the day
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi22.png

A group of 13 came together including Bernabeu and fellow Top-10 rider Panayotov.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi23.png

But numerous teams did not like it and it was brought back. On the long 2nd hill of the day, Jiriakov launched the next wave of attacks.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi24.png

Jiriakov, 11th Overall Matt Cooke, and Stage winner Frischkorn were the strongest, leaving behind Burke, Gibb and a control rider.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi25.png

3 became 5 when the races leading Asian rider Yukihiro Doi and Thomas Bontenackels bridged up to them.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi26.png

Doi took the KoM points and in the subseqeunt long downhill section, Gibb, Burke and the control rider made it across to the 5.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi27.png

The third classified hill of the day was very steep in parts, and the Pearl Jam team were obviously aware of this and took advantage of a disorganised peleton as Berthou, Walker, Panayotov, Rodrigues and more importantly Van Huffel all got away. Nicholas Roche and Andy Bajadali were the non-Pearl Jam riders in there.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi28.png

On this climb, the break of 8 had been cut down to 4, and Jiriakov took the points.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi29.png

Crossing 5th though was Wim van Huffel. The Belgian had used his teams work as a springboard and this is his move aimed at taking the race lead.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi30.png

Berthou, Walker, Rodrigues, Frischkorn, Roche and Bernabeu trail a minute behind Van Huffel. Ospina and Bajadali are slightly behind them, while Mestre's group is further back still.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi31.png

Bontenackels and Cooke stopped working in the breakaway leaving the work to Doi and Jiriakov as with 18km to go, Van Huffel caught up with them.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi32.png

Van Huffel won't believe how well this move is working. The 2nd group on the road has just not been caught by the peleton and it contains Walker, Berthou, Rodrigues, Bernabeu, Roche, Frischkorn, Bajadali and Ospina. This group is 2 minutes and 40 seconds behind Van Huffel's group!
Pluchkin, Hacecky and Bouet lead the 27-man peleton - but are over 3 minutes down and with less than 20km to go, they need to get a move on as Mestre's race lead is slipping away from him.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi33.png

The gaps havent fallen much at all at the intermediate sprint with 12km to go, which Jiriakov wins.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi34.png

And it becomes clear that Van Hufell will take the race lead, the chase behind is not good enough. Doi and Jiriakov begin to struggle in the closing stages as Van Huffel descends towards the finish.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi35.png

And it is a stage victory for Van Huffel ahead of Cooke and Bontenackels.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/langkawi36.png

The peleton arent even able to catch the whole of the 2nd group by the finish. Rodrigues, Ospina, Roche and Bajadali finished 20 seconds ahead of the peleton, and the gap is too big for Mestre - Van Huffel is the new race leader.
