Thanks for checking in! This is my new blog, which will follow me along the UCI WorldTour. My name is Alex Edmondson, and I'll be riding for the Orica-Scott squad for 2017.
Since I was a young boy I've been riding bikes competitively, mainly on the track. In 2012 I achieved my lifelong dream of riding at the Olympics for Australia. I was only 18 and was the 2nd youngest Australian Olympian ever. Since then I've achieved great success as a team pursuit cyclist representing Australia, capped off with 2 gold medals at the World Championships in 2014, in team pursuit, and individual pursuit.
My trainers always told me I had the build to be a strong road cyclist, especially in the northern classics, and I'd always enjoyed riding against the clock in a time-trial. I took their advice and in 2015 began riding the U23 WorldTour. I had a great year and was highlighted by my victory at the Tour of Flanders. This win really pushed me over the edge in terms of wanting to pursue a career as a road cyclist.
I signed on to Orica - BikeExchange for 2016, yet I had a quiet year as I focused on the track in build-up to the 2016 Rio Olympics. I decided that this would be my final competition as a track cyclist, at least for now.
The silver medal in the team pursuit was a great way to say goodbye to the track. Now it's 2017, and I'm focusing on the road. It's a great privilege to be able to ride for an Australian WorldTour team and I can't wait to get out there.

We're all here in Adelaide for the presentation of the Orica-Scott squad for 2017. Our team is quite similar to last season's but for a few new faces, so I know this squad pretty well. Here's a little rundown of our team leaders.
Esteban Chaves
17/1/1990, Climber
Esteban is an amazing climber, and a proven one-day rider, as shown by his victory in Il Lombardia last October. He has finished twice on the podium of a GT so will look to go one better this season with his debut Grand Tour victory. He will be our leader in the Giro d'Italia, aiming for the general classification. He will also be a part of our strong Ardennes squad, looking to earn the team a podium spot there.
Adam & Simon Yates
7/8/1992, Stage Racers
They mightn't like it, but I'll talk about these guys together, because not only are they twins, they're very similar riders. Gifted climbers and two of the most impressive young stage racers in the world. Adam will lead the team at Le Tour de France, where he finished 4th overall last season. He will aim to defend his best young rider's jersey. Simon's season will peak later, at La Vuelta a Espana. We have high hopes for them both and I'm sure they won't dissapoint.
Michael Albasini
20/12/1980, Puncheur
A veteran of the tour, Albo has been consistently winning races for the last decade. An absolute workhorse with terrific punch, he'll be aiming to perform again in the Ardennes just as he did last season. He will also ride La Vuelta with hopes of a stage win, and of course his home races, the Tour de Romandie, and the Tour de Suisse.
Caleb Ewan
11/7/1994, Sprinter
After setting the U23 circuit alight, Caleb turned pro and continued his terrific displays of speed. Our team's #1 sprinter, he will aim for stage wins at the Giro d'Italia, as well as various 1-day races that suit that his abilities. He'll start his season at his home race the Tour Down Under.
Simon Gerrans
16/5/1980, Puncheur
Similar to Albo, 'Gerro' is a true veteran of the peloton, with a proven pedigree in one-day races, as well as various stages at all the Grand Tours, he's a true Aussie legend. He's been Orica's most consistent rider since their inception, but will take more of a leadership role in moulding younger riders like myself. But no doubt he'll be an integral part in our classics team.
Roman Kreuziger
6/5/1986, Stage Racer
Roman joins us from Saxo-Tinkoff for this season, and he will be a key rider in our hopes for GC and Monument success in 2017. An outstanding climber, he'll be a super domestique at the Giro and La Vuelta. But he will also get chances to lead the team at Volta Ciclista a Catalunya & Tour de Romandie.
Matthew Hayman
20/4/1978, Northern Classics
Our road captain for the season, Matt is our most experienced rider and will provide invaluable leadership on the road. His victory last year in his beloved Paris-Roubaix was an ideal cap on a terrific career, and he'll lead us again in the northern classics, leading our youthful cobbles squad.

We've got a strong Australian presence so to be able to have that jersey in our squad for the year would be amazing. Then we have the TDU, where I'll be working for our Esteban and Caleb. After the 1-day race on the Great Ocean Road, I'll stay in Victoria for the Herald Sun Tour.

After a three week break comes the part of the season that I'm most looking forward to. The northern classics. I've worked hard in the last 12 months to improve myself riding on cobbles and on sharp and short climbs, and this year's cobble season will be my first real test at the Pro level. We'll be working with our strong squad led by Matthew Hayman, Luke Durbridge & Jens Keukeleire to try and get podium spots in Belgium, before we try and defend Matt's title at Paris - Roubaix.

My racing starts again in late July at the Tour de Pologne, in prep for the BinckBank Tour where we're bringing a strong squad. Then after the French classic in Bretagne, I'll head to Canada for a 10 day series of races, finally completing the year in Italy with two one-day races.
All in all a challenging season, with lots of highlights and things to look forward to!
I'm stoked to get into it and help the team get some great results, all while developing my own skills and taking any chances for glory I can get along the way.

I really like stories like this where it's written... I don't really get what you're doing. It sounds like a rider, then a team where said rider is not?

Edit: In this very case, I was missing eyes. Third was a charm. I looked for a TT or NC specialist and younger than 23.
Hey guys,
Here in Buninyong today for the nats, excited to get out there! Before we started though I thought I'd share some details about my specific strengths and weaknesses as a rider.
My track background means I can generate some real power and speed, but I'm yet to develop the stamina and strength to hold that effort for a long period in an extended time-trial. However in prologues and short TTs I can really put the foot down and expect some good results there.
As I've said previously, I think my real skills are on cobblestones. My win at the U23 Tour of Flanders proves that. I have great bike control and I feel very comfortable powering along those bumpy roads. I also fancy myself a decent climber, but my stamina isn't quite there yet so I'll stick to the short and sharp hills more than the long mountains. And if I find myself needing to sprint to the line, I'm confident in my abilities to get there first. On the track it was all about pure speed and power so luckily those skills carry over.
Places I need to improve are my recovery skills, I'm not used to the gruelling length of a full season on the road, so improving my fitness and stamina will be very important. I also need to get more confident in my ability to ride downhill, it's an integral skill in modern road racing and something I'll definitely be working on.
Australian National Road Race Championships - NC
Buninyong - Buninyong 160.2kms
My first competitive race of the year, as it is every year for many Australians, is the national championships road race in Ballarat. Since we're an Australia-based squad, we obviously have a very strong team here. We've brought 6 of our best, led by two-time champ Simon Gerrans, and Caleb Ewan if we can keep the group together for a bunch sprint. I'm here to stretch the legs and help out my teammates on what is a very challenging circuit.
Riders to look out for here today are Michael Matthews (Team SunWeb), Richie Porte (BMC Racing Team), Jay McCarthy (Bora - Hansgrohe), Nathan Earle (Team Ukyo) and Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing Team). As with all NC races though, it's anyone's race.

Race Report
Early on in the race, some lone wolves knew the only way they would have a chance is in a breakaway. A few riders got out in front and Orica-Scott took it upon themselves to head the chase, led by Alex Edmondson and Rob Power.
With 60km left all attackers were brought back and the pack was together again. BMC were led here by Richie Porte and Rohan Dennis, so teammate Miles Scotson was given the go-ahead to attack, and took the advantage to try jump ahead. Orica - Scott were sick of working at the front so they sent out skilled climber Damien Howson after him to try and form a front group.
With Orica no longer chasing, Scotson, Howson and the quick thinking Sean Lake formed a 3-man group, and they were working together to create a large gap.

Soon the pace lifted in the trio, and despite his best efforts Sean Lake was dropped off. Howson tried to do the same to his punchy compatriot but couldn't manage it and the two sped down for the final lap.
It was clear that Miles Scotson was very strong today, as he attacked Howson on the final downhill before the final ascension.
Damien Howson can feel the champion's jersey slipping out of his fingers.
On the final climb Howson dug deep and just caught up to Scotson, hopping on his wheel as they battled up to the finish line.
Who would be crowned Australian champion?
Both riders were absolutely cooked from the 160km up and down slog, but Miles Scotson was known for his quick finish and despite a valiant effort from Howson, made it over the line first, to earn the Australian champion's jersey for 2017!

Several minutes later, Sean Lake made it to third just ahead of the main group, where Michael Matthews led them over the line. A dissapointment for the main favourites but a great show from Miles Scotson.

It was a quiet day for me, but when I checked the final results saw I was in the top-10, which was a nice surprise. Damien was so close yet so far today, but he deserves a lot of credit for a very gutsy ride. Congrats to Miles, who is an old friend of mine from my days on the track! We rode together at the 2014 World Champs so was great to see him win today.
The season proper starts next week at the Tour Down Under, see you there!
Here we are! The start of the TDU, Australia's biggest week on the WordTour calendar, and we're here to defend our title. Last year's winner Simon Gerrans isn't here as he's having a slow build-up to the classics season, so we've brought our main man Esteban Chaves to lead the attack uphill. And of course Caleb Ewan is here, with intentions to win a stage and the points jersey. He'll have some stiff competition though, as it seems the world's best sprinters are here. Kittel, Greipel, Sagan, Cavendish, Matthews, Demare, Modolo.. It'll be tough but Caleb is in great form for the early season so we're gonna give it our all. Robert Kluge will be his lead out man bringing him to the line.
My role here will be as domestique to whoever needs me, whether it be Caleb or Esteban. I'll be protecting riders, chasing down breakaways and getting water bottles.
Today's first stage isn't pan flat, but I dont' think the hills will be enough to stop a bunch sprint. Here's Caleb's first chance for glory. Enjoy!

Race Report
With the King of the Mountains jersey up for grabs, there was a lot of competition to get into the first break. A 6-man group formed, and Julien Duval of AG2R was the first to reach the top, meaning he grabbed 10 points and would wear the jersey tomorrow.

With so many teams set on a stage win for today, the breakaway didn't stand much of a chance. However their lead hovered around the 3 minute mark for most of the race, and with about 40kms remaining the pack put the squeeze on, and the lead began to diminish. All the pre-race favourites were well positioned heading towards the finish line.
Lotto, Bora, Orica & Quickstep were leading the charge.
The break wasn't giving up though, and the strongest riders began to show their difference as the break began to split due to a heavy pace. Despite having teammate Marcel Kittel behind him chomping at the bit, Maximilian Schachmann of Quickstep was leading the break.

Orica's Alex Edmondson was the one putting the foot down now, emptying the tank at the front of the peloton. It worked a charm too as the former track world champ started picking off the breakaway riders one by one. With 15km left the pack was back together again and the leadout trains began to form.
Edmondson's pure power was too much for the break to hold off.
The leadouts were in fine form today, with Ewan, Greipel & Sagan all in perfect position, with Modolo, Viviani & Kittel all on their wheels. Kittel swung around Ewan, who was being led by Roger Kluge, and kicked first. Ewan jumped on his wheel. It was on, who would make it to the line first?
Whose train would reign supreme?
And in an almost photo finish, Andre Greipel just holds off a charging Caleb Ewan to grab the win! Kittel was very close too, as Greipel steals it by a whisker! What a finish!
The smallest of margins is enough to give Andre Greipel his first win of the year.

Ahh, so close! We had a perfect leadout but Caleb just kicked a second too late I think. A great day for me, I was working hard at the front to bring back that pesky break and now I'm sore! But onto tomorrow, where I'll work for Esteban on the uphill finish. Before tomorrow's stage I'll give you a quick rundown of all the GC favourites, so you know who to look for.
@Reveille Scotson is quite a performer in this game it seems, he's a jet IRL so very realistic!

Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 2 - UWT
Stirling - Paracombe 170.4kms
Stage 2 is here, and with it comes the first chance for the GC riders to have a crack at grabbing the overall lead. A lumpy route through to the last 40kmswhere it plateaus, and then we head up a tough climb into Paracombe. The strongest riders will be able to grab some gaps on that final climb.
Obviously Esteban is our man for today, he's feeling good and will ride aggressively today to try and distance himself from the rest of the field. He'll be up against it though, with some great riders here to challenge for the title. Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky), Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Julien Alaphillipe (Quick-Step) amd Rui Costa (UAE) will all try and explode up that final hill, while Peter Sagan (Bora - Hansgrohe) and Michael Matthews (Sunweb) will hope they can survive to the sprint where their speed will be very dangerous.
Caleb won't be able to hold on today, so he'll just relax in the peloton. I'll be protecting Esteban today up until the final climb, where Damien Howson will lead him up the climb.
Race Report
A break of the day formed, highlighted by Tobias Ludvigsson (FDJ), Julien Duval (AG2R) & Angel Vicioso (Katusha - Alpecin). With no mountain points and only a few sprints points available, they were there for TV time and the slight chance they could make it to the finish.
Duval makes it into another breakaway for AG2R
The break were being reeled back in, and on the final ascent before the major downhill section, Edmondson & Howson were leading out their man Esteban Chaves for an attack!
Orica working hard to put their man in position
Chaves sped off the front and soon he had caught up with the breakaway, a minute or so ahead of the peoloton. He tried to work with them but they were too tired to help out.

Team Sky were here for their man Kwiatkowski, and were having none of Chaves' attack. He was brought back with the rest of the breakaway and settled back into the front group.
Sky brought a strong team and Chaves' couldn't hold them off
Chaves was feeling very good today clearly, as just before the final finish Damien Howson led him down the hill to try create a gap.
Chaves really wanted to be first to the line today!
As the final climb began Chaves was still ahead, but the group were on his tail, led by the imposing Kwiatkowski. With only 50m or so left, and all the favourites were surfacing! A very steep final climb, who would make it to the line first?
Chaves leads a strong group to the line, who will win?
And more heartbreak for Orica as Kwiatkowski steals it from Chaves on the line! Very similar finish to yesterday as Valverde finishes right with them. Some great competition here to start the season!

Wow, Esteban was on fire today! He came so close to holding off those other guys but just like yesterday we were pipped! He moves into 2nd overall though, and we'll look to go one better on Old Wilunga Hill on stage 5.
Tomorrow is more flat stuff, another chance for Caleb.
Stage 3 to Vic Harbor is a flat stage, another chance for Caleb to snag a victory, After my effort yesterday though, the DS has told me I've got free reign to attack today and try join the break! Very exciting as I'll get to ride for nyself, and give my teammates a break from chasing. Let's see how we go!
Race Report
And right off the bat we have attacks, this time it's Australian champ Miles Scotson (BMC) showing off his new jersey, followed by Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Daniel Teklahaimanot (Dimension Data) and Alex Edmondson (Orica-Scott). A few more riders jump on and they create a strong 8-man group. They are let go by the peloton and quickly grow out to a 4-minute lead.
Perhaps today the breakaway will survive?
The hot sun was beaming down on another 30+ degree day. The peloton was tiring and with no Orica to help chase, the break was holding on to a strong lead with only 20kms left. 3 minutes separated the pack from the break, with the Australian champion fronting the charge to the line.
Edmondson, Scotson & Teklahaimanot seemed to be the strongest riders in the break.
There was only 5 kilometres left and the pack was chasing hard, but the break was just holding on. Miles Scotson attacked on the downhill as Edmondson tried to follow. The rest of the group was looking shot.
Could this be a famous victory for one of these young Aussies?
They were so close, but under the 1km banner the rampaging peloton ate them up, just as the sprinters were preparing to go. A valiant effort but not enough today on a stage that was always seen as one for the fast men.
The exhausted breakaway riders get swallowed into the chasing peloton.
And a crash at the back! Several riders caught up in it, including Julian Alaphillipe, Nathan Haas, Damien Howson & Ramunas Navardauskas. Luckily there's no serious injuries but they will all lose nearly 3 minutes on the stage.
The crash caused some major splits in the peloton! One of those caught up is Caleb Ewan who loses the wheel of his lead out man. Arnaud Demare and Sam Bennett get caught as well. The sprint at the front was now on, with Greipel & Sagan looking in perfect position.
A chance for Sagan maybe?
Another heartstopping finish but Greipel grabs another victory, just ahead of an explosive Sacha Modolo on the far right. He seems to be the fastest guy here, but after Sagan's performance here and yesterday, may struggle to grab the points jersey. Ewan recovers well but can only manage 8th spot. A disappointing day for him.

Another super eventful day! It's a shame me and Miles couldn't work together to make it to the finish, I would've loved to race him to the line just like in the old days. Alas it wasn't to be, and disappointingly for Caleb that crash caused some splits and he couldn't compete for the win. Tomorrow is a new day though, and I'll be back in the saddle working for Caleb.
A bumpy profile here for stage 4, but again, I doubt it'll be enough to split the peloton and we should end in a group sprint. Caleb will be looking for redemption after yesterday, and we'll be working all day to get him in the best position. I enjoyed my day as a free rider yesterday but I'm a pure domestique today.
Race Report
A big break formed again, with Tom Leezer, Marco Marcato, Patrick Bevin, Roy Curvers, and once more, Miles Scotson. The Aussie champion keeps fighting on. Over the only mountain sprint of the day Marcato grabs the maximum points, and the break speed ahead.
Another strong break formed, with Scotson showing his will to win.
Now with the break out to around 4 minutes ahead, Bora-Hansgrohe & Lotto-Soudal take up the role of chasers for their respective sprinters. Orica lends a helping hand too.
Two strong teams at the helm of the peloton
Despite pressure from behind, the break was proving very strong, and held onto a decent lead. With 15kms left Orica were sick of waiting and jumped on the front, and the break was in their sights. Alex Edmondson & Sam Bewley were pushing hard.
Could this be Caleb Ewan's day?
The peloton hit tremendous speeds in their chase of the break, and as a result just past the 5km to go banner, a nasty crash near the back! A big pile of bodies on the road, however only one abandon, Daniele Bennati of Movistar. Unlucky for him, Orica's Damien Howson is down again after his fall yesterday, as well as team-mate and lead-out man Roger Kluge. Mitchell Docker will have to take over those responsibilites. Rohan Dennis is another notable name down, who will lose time today.
The peloton paid for the risks taken to catch the break, and many riders hit the deck.
As a result of the crash, the peloton slows, and the break survive a little longer! As the final sprint began, with a vicious peloton following, the break were just ahead! Would they be caught?

And somehow, Miles Scotson wins! His second victory of the year, and another astonishing ride after yesterday's efforts! What a way to kick his season off as Australian champion.

The sprinters miss out by just a few metres, as Greipel, followed by Matthews and Ewan, comes in first for the peloton. No time differences at the front, so a win for pride and glory for the young BMC rider.
