A tough hilly stage awaits us today, with the big favourites being Spilak, Trofimov and Hagen. The better puncheurs will look to gain time before the TT tomorrow, while the stage racers will look to limit their losses.
As ever it’s difficult to get a settled break early on, but Kolar would lead Albert and Fritsch over the first Cat 3 and spark a move. Smit, La Lavandier, Edet, Quevedo, Changpad, Ngock Ngue, Hofland and Bonnin would join the trio up front to create our breakaway today.
Quevedo would lead the group through the first intermediate sprint, but the peloton was chasing hard at this point fearing the strength of such a large break. Some of the riders caught in the crash yesterday would be dropped as a result of this pace - Koren, Dennis, Bookwalter, Kiserlovski and Fiedler the most notable.
Smit would lead Quevedo over the 2nd Cat 3, with the break fracturing on the climb. It would come back together on the descent, but only as a 6 - Edet, Smit, Albert, Ngock Ngue, Kolar and Quevedo the riders remaining.
Albert would win the 3rd Cat 3 with 100km to go, once again resulting in the break being blown apart. Only Quevedo and Smit would be able to chase him down on the descent, with the others dropping back.
The Cat 4 with 59km to go would see Smit go clear, but not by a huge margin. He’d quickly be brought back and Quevedo would lead the trio through the intermediate sprint with 49km to go 2’30 ahead of a 142 rider peloton.
With 33 km to go the peloton had narrowed the gap down to around 30 seconds, and so Smit decided to strike out alone!
It’d all prove to be for nought though as he was caught by the peloton with 23km to go, 2km from the top of the penultimate Cat 4.
Kebede would lead a now 86 rider peloton over that Cat 4, with all the big favourites still present with 21km to go.
Zakarin would lead the group through the final Cat 4, but then the attacks would begin on the descent. Ignatiev, Trofimov, Hagen and Bobridge would be the instigators - but Spilak would chase them down with Koretzky’s assistance.
The descent would be ridden at great speed, and as the road ramped up again with 5km to go then Kelderman would launch an attack - and immediately be chased down by the other favourites. All together again at this point, with 76 riders in the front group.
Hagen would use this as a springboard though, and with 4km to go he would jump clear with Trofimov in his wheel. This move wouldn’t get very far, but fractured the peloton once again - only 33 riders up front, with Van Garderen and Koren the biggest names dropped.
2.5km to go and Bobridge would launch an attack, with Hagen in his wheel. They’d quickly build a gap to Kelderman, Ponzi, Trofimov and Skujins behind - who had managed to escape the peloton.
The other 4 would be brought back, but Hagen and Bobridge would pass under the Flamme Rouge with 20 seconds of advantage. Will it be enough?
The downhill finish ensured it would be, and Bobridge took a fantastic win! Hagen settling for second today.
Ponzi would lead in the main group 15 seconds later. Skujins, Koretzky, Spilak, Ignatiev, Boom, Lutsenko and Kelderman completing the top 10. Bobridge will fancy his chances of winning the GC, but the presence of Coppel in the main group means an enthralling final stage in prospect.
