Tour du Faso
Stage 3/3 Kaya – Dori 127.0 km
The final stage starts Kaya where it finished yesterday, form there north east to Dori, Séno Province.
This will be an extremely hard stage, with more than 60% of the route raced on roads covered with lose bricks and desert sand or gravel. There will be absolutely no time to relax, off guard for a second and you may be in the wrong group.
There will be bonus seconds and points on three intermediate sprints: Pissila after 31.0 km, Tougouri after 65.5 km and Taparko after 88.0 km.
In 2015 the stage was won by Yauheni Hutarovich from BelarusBank Pro Cycling, with the financial collapse of his former team after the 2015 season, Hutarovich is now with VisitUkraine, a team not taken part in this race.
It is sunny, with a light breeze.
The attacking starts right away, many rider would like to be in a breakaway, prior to entering the first brick road section.
After 9 km the first riders hit the first section of irregular road surface, at this point we got a front group with Abelouache, Carthy, Davison, Tempier, Thill and Venturini, best placed in GC at 4’35”.
At 1’01 a pursuit with Boem, Farantakis, Fernando and Griffith
At 1’20 the peloton.
As soon as the peloton hits the bricks the pace increase, probably not due to respect for the break, more likely just the fight for position, and the option to isolate favorites or important domestics.
With 111 km left, just 17 km behind them, most of the breakaway is already reeled back in. Just Venturini alone in front with a gap of 1’21 to the peloton, and 18” behind him Abelouache and Tempier.
The road surface is not only hard on the riders, it is also tough on the equipment, it will be impossible to mention every puncture and crash under these conditions, can just say that we already have 7 riders more than 3 minutes after the bunch.
It is Darmonov leading the pack.
Not everyone of the stronger riders, have managed to place themselves near the front of the peloton, and over the next two kilometer we get a sudden split, very fast a group of 63 riders lose 2’07 to the first half of the peloton.
Amongst the better riders caught in the wrong end of the split are :
Wynants, Walsleben, De Haes, Kurth, De Vreese, Marcos
It is mainly Laporte, Rathe, De Haes and Terasaki burning energy to close the gap.
The pace in the peloton is not extreme, but you can sense a sigh of relief from many team manager cars, when to two huge group melt together. In the process many rider have been left behind.
96 km to go, and now the situation is:
Alone in front Venturini
At 1’20” Abelouache
At 1’59 The peloton (83 riders)
53 rider scatter in smaller groups all more than 3’46” behind Venturini
Result of the first intermediate sprint in Pissila
Rider Points Time Venturini6 -3 Abelouache4 -2 Ariesen2 -1
80 km left.
Abelouache at 1’05”, Peloton at 2‘28“
75 km left
Abelouache at 53”, Peloton at 2‘41“
Camera spot Nuyens in the rear end of the pack.
60 km left, Abelouache have almost caught Venturini as they pass the 2nd intermediate sprint in Tougouri.
Peloton at 3’25
Result of intermediate sprint in Tougouri
Rider Points Time Venturini6 -3 Abelouache4 -2 Van Leijen2 -1
50 km left, peloton at 2’36”, Van Leijen leads the pack.
First Ticos Air Costa Rica and a little later also Isostar – Adriatic send up several riders to increase the pace.
45 km left, peloton at 1’40”
Result of intermediate last sprint in Taparko
Rider Points Time Venturini6 -3 Abelouache4 -2 Junor2 -1
37 km left, peloton at 44”
23 km left, the breakaway is over.
We are now at the final hard brick road section, everyone looking at each other expecting an attack, and we don’t have to wait long.
It is Drucker, there was obviously a reason why his team wanted to bring the breakaway back, at exactly this moment in the race.
At this crucial moment we got a 20 km/h head/side wind. It is getting windier now.
21.5 km to the line.
20 km to the line.
With such a dangerous attack, the selection came very swiftly, 10 riders made it into the line behind Drucker.
The pack lost 30” over just 1.5 km.
The 10 riders are:
Drucker, De Maar, Thomas, Kasperkiewicz, Bridges, Boonen, Lindeman, Bush, Ariesen and Andersen.
Drucker is not satisfied whit the results, he accelerates again, only Lindeman attempt to follow the push.
15.5 km left.
With the 2nd group losing time, Thomas realize that if he want to win this race, he has to close this gap alone.
14.5 km left.
12 km to the line.
Lindeman was very close to Drucker but never really able to sit with him, now he has been caught by Thomas
The situation is:
Drucker in front.
At 11” Thomas & Lindeman
At 46”
Bush, Kasperkiewicz, De Maar & Boonen
At 1’20”
Bridges
At 1’45”
Ariesen and Andersen.
Now Thomas has accelerated further, forcing Lindeman to drop his wheel.
9 km left for Drucker
Thomas at 12”
Lindeman at 32”
Bush, Kasperkiewicz, De Maar & Boonen at 1’01”
Bridges at 2’13”
Peloton, 72 riders at 3’10”
5 km to the line
Thomas has closed the gap, now sitting on Drucker’s wheel, they got 1’09 to group Kasperkiewicz.
Meanwhile group Kasperkiewicz has caught Lindeman, but now Boonen has lost contact, sitting 29” after.
Bridges at 3’36”, peloton at 4’20”.
3 km to the line, from the poursuivant, De Maar has attacked now 24” in front of the others, he got 51” up to the stage leaders.
Together Drucker & Thomas passes under the red kite.
De Maar at 49”
Group Kasperkiewicz at 1’36”
Boonen at 2’10”
The duo in front keep going right up to the last 200 meters, then Thomas starts a short sprint, Drucker just look down on the bricks, he has nothing left.
Thomas claim the stage as well as the GC.
De Maar, has also more or less exploded, crossing the line at 1’21”.
Bush wins the sprint in the next group over Lindeman and then Kasperkiewicz.
Quite amazing race by Kasperkiewicz, holding on to the GC podium, a rider not even considered for the preview.
To round the reports from Tour du Faso, I can’t help mention Niki Østergaard, he had an early puncture, he came back to the peloton , then he crashed on the 2nd brick section mid stage, but again he came back to the peloton, and then with just 800 meter to the line this:
A bad day at the office.
