Tour du Faso - Stage 3
Tamijo

Tour du Faso

Stage 3/3 Kaya – Dori 127.0 km

The final stage starts Kaya where it finished yesterday, form there north east to Dori, Séno Province.

This will be an extremely hard stage, with more than 60% of the route raced on roads covered with lose bricks and desert sand or gravel. There will be absolutely no time to relax, off guard for a second and you may be in the wrong group.

There will be bonus seconds and points on three intermediate sprints: Pissila after 31.0 km, Tougouri after 65.5 km and Taparko after 88.0 km.

In 2015 the stage was won by Yauheni Hutarovich from BelarusBank Pro Cycling, with the financial collapse of his former team after the 2015 season, Hutarovich is now with VisitUkraine, a team not taken part in this race.

It is sunny, with a light breeze.

The attacking starts right away, many rider would like to be in a breakaway, prior to entering the first brick road section.

After 9 km the first riders hit the first section of irregular road surface, at this point we got a front group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm_mor.png Abelouache, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Davison, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Tempier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Thill and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Venturini, best placed in GC at 4’35”.

At 1’01 a pursuit with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Boem, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Farantakis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Fernando and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Griffith

At 1’20 the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/1.jpg

As soon as the peloton hits the bricks the pace increase, probably not due to respect for the break, more likely just the fight for position, and the option to isolate favorites or important domestics.

With 111 km left, just 17 km behind them, most of the breakaway is already reeled back in. Just pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Venturini alone in front with a gap of 1’21 to the peloton, and 18” behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm_mor.png Abelouache and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Tempier.

The road surface is not only hard on the riders, it is also tough on the equipment, it will be impossible to mention every puncture and crash under these conditions, can just say that we already have 7 riders more than 3 minutes after the bunch.

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Darmonov leading the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/2.jpg

Not everyone of the stronger riders, have managed to place themselves near the front of the peloton, and over the next two kilometer we get a sudden split, very fast a group of 63 riders lose 2’07 to the first half of the peloton.

Amongst the better riders caught in the wrong end of the split are :
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Wynants, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Walsleben, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png De Haes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Kurth, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Vreese, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Marcos

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/3.jpg

It is mainly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Laporte, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Rathe, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png De Haes and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Terasaki burning energy to close the gap.

The pace in the peloton is not extreme, but you can sense a sigh of relief from many team manager cars, when to two huge group melt together. In the process many rider have been left behind.

96 km to go, and now the situation is:

First pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Ticos Air Costa Rica and a little later also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Isostar – Adriatic send up several riders to increase the pace.

23 km left, the breakaway is over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/7.jpg

We are now at the final hard brick road section, everyone looking at each other expecting an attack, and we don’t have to wait long.

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker, there was obviously a reason why his team wanted to bring the breakaway back, at exactly this moment in the race.

At this crucial moment we got a 20 km/h head/side wind. It is getting windier now.

21.5 km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/8.jpg

20 km to the line.
With such a dangerous attack, the selection came very swiftly, 10 riders made it into the line behind Drucker.
The pack lost 30” over just 1.5 km.

The 10 riders are:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb_cur.png De Maar, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Thomas, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Kasperkiewicz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Bridges, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Boonen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Lindeman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Bush, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Ariesen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Andersen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker is not satisfied whit the results, he accelerates again, only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Lindeman attempt to follow the push.

15.5 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/10.jpg

With the 2nd group losing time, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Thomas realize that if he want to win this race, he has to close this gap alone.

14.5 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/11.jpg

12 km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Lindeman was very close to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker but never really able to sit with him, now he has been caught by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Thomas

The situation is:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker in front.

At 11” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Thomas & pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Lindeman

Now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Thomas has accelerated further, forcing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Lindeman to drop his wheel.

9 km left for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker

5 km to the line
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Thomas has closed the gap, now sitting on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker’s wheel, they got 1’09 to group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Kasperkiewicz.

Meanwhile group Kasperkiewicz has caught pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Lindeman, but now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Boonen has lost contact, sitting 29” after.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Bridges at 3’36”, peloton at 4’20”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/14.jpg

3 km to the line, from the poursuivant, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb_cur.png De Maar has attacked now 24” in front of the others, he got 51” up to the stage leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/15.jpg

Together pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker & pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Thomas passes under the red kite.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb_cur.png De Maar at 49”

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Boonen at 2’10”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/16.jpg

The duo in front keep going right up to the last 200 meters, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Thomas starts a short sprint, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker just look down on the bricks, he has nothing left.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Thomas claim the stage as well as the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb_cur.png De Maar, has also more or less exploded, crossing the line at 1’21”.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Bush wins the sprint in the next group over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Lindeman and thenpcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Kasperkiewicz.

Quite amazing race by Kasperkiewicz, holding on to the GC podium, a rider not even considered for the preview. Frown

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/DuFaso/Stage3/18.jpg

To round the reports from Tour du Faso, I can’t help mention Niki Østergaard, he had an early puncture, he came back to the peloton , then he crashed on the 2nd brick section mid stage, but again he came back to the peloton, and then with just 800 meter to the line this:

A bad day at the office.
