An interesting course awaits us today - a look at the favourites list suggest that it favours those sprinters who can get over a hill, but you never know how it’ll turn out.

i.imgur.com/2BhUTDl.png

The break would be allowed to form early on, consisting of just three riders today - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Kosic, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png van Zyl and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Insausti. The gap back to the peloton would peak at 8 minutes with 150km to go, and from then on steadily decline.

i.imgur.com/262VIFN.png

Nothing then happens for the next 115km, until with 35km to go and the break leading by around 2 minutes, we get our first attack - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck going for it on the descent! To give you an idea of the race speed so far, no one has been dropped from the peloton yet.

i.imgur.com/3BTTRI6.png

The peloton then decides to up the pace to catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck, and as a result a split forms! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs is the most notable name of the sprinters caught behind, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boivin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Kreder are also in that group. They’ll face quite the battle to make it back, 1’30 behind the peloton with 29km to go.

i.imgur.com/pQUAvYw.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck is caught shortly after, and up front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Kosic has been dropped by has companions. The two remaining breakaway members have 40 seconds to the peloton with 25km to go.

i.imgur.com/Lm1gjPb.png

As we crest the penultimate climb with 20km to go, we get news that the second group has reattached itself to the peloton - but at this stage those in it may find positioning an issue. The break remains a threat though, now leading by 55 seconds!

i.imgur.com/Wt4mHnZ.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png van Zyl realises that he’s the stronger of the breakaway duo and launches an attack with 15km to go, immediately gaining 15 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Insausti. The peloton seems either unable or unwilling to chase him down, the gap now at 1’05.

i.imgur.com/MF1Y6jz.png

We crest the final climb with 10km to go just as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Insausti is caught, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png van Zyl still leads by 55 seconds! The peloton consists of 132 riders at this point, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Tsatevich, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kreder, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Farrar, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Meyer the most notable names missing.

i.imgur.com/7cYb3qr.png

5km to go and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png van Zyl still has a lead of 28 seconds, but Pokerstars and Evonik are leading a charging peloton behind. Riders are falling off the back of the peloton due to the pace - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Guardini the latest casualty.

i.imgur.com/7cYb3qr.png

And with 2km to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png van Zyl’s resistance proves futile as he’s caught. A messy sprint seems in prospect though with only Pokerstars able to form any semblance of a leadout train. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen are at the front - with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Guarnieri the next sprinters of note, but down in around 15th position.

i.imgur.com/w85HwZT.png

The catch is the sign for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb to launch his sprint, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis clinging on for dear life - while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen fights to catch up. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dzamastagic, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Guarnieri lead the charge from behind, but you’d think they’re too far back.

i.imgur.com/ltLc8mT.png

Under the flamme rouge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb is still in the box seat, but can pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen find enough to come round him in the closing stages? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift looks the strongest of the rest, but 4th seems to be all he’s fighting for.

i.imgur.com/BiXepWW.png

It turns out that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis does in fact have something left in the tank, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb begins to fade 700m from the line. But here comes pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen…

i.imgur.com/29PnqdB.png

300m to go and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen seems unable to gain any more - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis may just have this in the bag. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb has completely faded, but his 3rd place seems to be secure.

i.imgur.com/W2iu3Je.png

And indeed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis does take the win! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen has to settle for 2nd, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb ends up 3rd after launching too early.

i.imgur.com/Wpw8YK5.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss is best of the rest ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Roelandts, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dzamastagic, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Boeckmans, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora_gbr.png Kennaugh round out the top 10.
