An interesting course awaits us today - a look at the favourites list suggest that it favours those sprinters who can get over a hill, but you never know how it’ll turn out.
The break would be allowed to form early on, consisting of just three riders today - Kosic, van Zyl and Insausti. The gap back to the peloton would peak at 8 minutes with 150km to go, and from then on steadily decline.
Nothing then happens for the next 115km, until with 35km to go and the break leading by around 2 minutes, we get our first attack - Vanspeybrouck going for it on the descent! To give you an idea of the race speed so far, no one has been dropped from the peloton yet.
The peloton then decides to up the pace to catch Vanspeybrouck, and as a result a split forms! Mohs is the most notable name of the sprinters caught behind, but Kelderman, Boivin and Kreder are also in that group. They’ll face quite the battle to make it back, 1’30 behind the peloton with 29km to go.
Vanspeybrouck is caught shortly after, and up front Kosic has been dropped by has companions. The two remaining breakaway members have 40 seconds to the peloton with 25km to go.
As we crest the penultimate climb with 20km to go, we get news that the second group has reattached itself to the peloton - but at this stage those in it may find positioning an issue. The break remains a threat though, now leading by 55 seconds!
van Zyl realises that he’s the stronger of the breakaway duo and launches an attack with 15km to go, immediately gaining 15 seconds on Insausti. The peloton seems either unable or unwilling to chase him down, the gap now at 1’05.
We crest the final climb with 10km to go just as Insausti is caught, and van Zyl still leads by 55 seconds! The peloton consists of 132 riders at this point, Vesely, Coquard, Tsatevich, Kreder, Farrar, Ulanowski and Meyer the most notable names missing.
5km to go and van Zyl still has a lead of 28 seconds, but Pokerstars and Evonik are leading a charging peloton behind. Riders are falling off the back of the peloton due to the pace - Guardini the latest casualty.
And with 2km to go, van Zyl’s resistance proves futile as he’s caught. A messy sprint seems in prospect though with only Pokerstars able to form any semblance of a leadout train. Mohs, Degenkolb, Tzortzakis and Van Stayen are at the front - with Swift and Guarnieri the next sprinters of note, but down in around 15th position.
The catch is the sign for Degenkolb to launch his sprint, with Tzortzakis clinging on for dear life - while Van Stayen fights to catch up. Dzamastagic, Swift and Guarnieri lead the charge from behind, but you’d think they’re too far back.
Under the flamme rouge and Degenkolb is still in the box seat, but can Tzortzakis and Van Stayen find enough to come round him in the closing stages? Swift looks the strongest of the rest, but 4th seems to be all he’s fighting for.
It turns out that Tzortzakis does in fact have something left in the tank, as Degenkolb begins to fade 700m from the line. But here comes Van Stayen…
300m to go and Van Stayen seems unable to gain any more - Tzortzakis may just have this in the bag. Degenkolb has completely faded, but his 3rd place seems to be secure.
And indeed Tzortzakis does take the win! Van Stayen has to settle for 2nd, while Degenkolb ends up 3rd after launching too early.
Goss is best of the rest ahead of Swift. Roelandts, Dzamastagic, Boeckmans, Guarnieri and Kennaugh round out the top 10.
