Tour of America - Stage 18

Tour of America

Stage 18/21 Ephrata - Ephrata 194.5 km

From Republic the caravan has driven about 200 km south to Ephrata, Grant County, Washington.

The stage start with a circular route of about 110 km into the Beezley Hills, after that a shorter circle passing the same hill 6 times (4 of them as KoM sprint).

With a finish of constant hill climbing over more than 80 km, a route that will fit the traditional Ardennes classics rider types. With many gravel road sections, might feel a lot like Strade Bianche.

Two intermediate sprints, Crescent Bar Resort after 53.4 km and Palisades after 83.2 km.

Six KoM climbs:
Beezley Hills #1 after 7,7 & 132.9 & 145,8 & 158.7 & 171.6 km (cat3). 3.9 km at 5.0%
Beezley Hills #2 after 22,4 km

In 2015 the stage was won by Martin Kohler, his team is not here this time.

It is sunny, with very little wind. Might be a bit dusty, otherwise perfect conditions.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Kamzong attacks right from the start, soon to follow pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar wins the first KoM sprint over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Kamzong.

On the downhill also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov joins the group.

On the 2nd climb pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Kamzong and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti are in trouble, losing 30”.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov wins the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford

Peloton at 2’04.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Kamzong and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti close the gap.

5 riders in front passing the intermediade sprint, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov first, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford and then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti.

Peloton at 2’48.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/3.jpg

The Peloton keeps a controlling pace, never letting the break get more than 3 minutes, mainly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png KAYAK - Clas Ohlsen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Eritel – Sonatrach taking turns at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/4.jpg

The breakaway passes the 2nd intermediate sprint with 2’31, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti

111 km to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/5.jpg

With about 70 km to the line the riders enter the final section, form now it is up and down over 7 hill tops.

The riders in the breakaway pass the KoM together, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Kamzong wins the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov

Peloton at 2’19, 61 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/6.jpg

Again today we spot pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis, not able to sit with the peloton, sad to see what should be a podium candidate in this situation, based on an unfortunate crash.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/7.jpg

Next KoM, the breakaway still 5 riders, seemingly working together for a stage win.
The KoM goes to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar.

Peloton at 2’28 with 49 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/8.jpg

Next climb, front group still united, KoM goes to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png World Cycling Centre are now leading the peloton, may seem a bit strange with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford sitting in the breakaway.

Can it be a signal that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo is feeling very goods today ?

88 riders left in the peloton, at 2’48 with 36 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/9.jpg

On the 2nd last climb and last KoM the breakaway split up, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov alone in front.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford at 24”

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Kamzong at 1’01”

Peloton is getting closer now at 1’38, World Cycling Centre no longer in front, it is now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Reguigui setting pace up the hill.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar wins the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford gets the last 2 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/10.jpg

At the botton of the final climb, just 12.4 km to the line.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar alone in front
At 15” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov
At 44” the peloton, now 64 riders.

Half way up, 10.8 km to the line, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira attacks from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/11.jpg

Oliveira did not get away the peloton reach the top together. Then a new attempt, this time pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Osorio, countered by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Gaimon and again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira

9.5 km to the line, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar just a few seconds in front of the attackers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/12.jpg

Behind the peloton we see GC top 10 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ratiy, some groups back, losing time quickly. Right now at 2’19”, the peloton is 44 riders.

5 km to the line, a front group of 3 riders pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Osorio, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Gaimon and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira, not far behind them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar

Peloton at 15”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/13.jpg

The trio is still leading with 11 seconds passing under the red kite, with 800 meter to the line pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Osorio opens the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/14.jpg

But soon it is clear that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira got the legs.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira wins the stage in the Beezley Hills. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Gaimon takes a very close 2nd in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Osorio.

They gain 17” on the peloton. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič wins the bunch sprint over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage18/15.jpg

NB: Just to clarify a technicality, for some obscure reason Anders Ekh Dahlberg (KAYAK-Clas Ohlson) was handed 2 KoM points on the stage by the officials, but he was never ever close to any KoM sprint. An official complaint has been send to UCI.
