Apparently this stage is hilly, but it features two Cat 2s and a Cat 1 - so I’ll let you make up your own mind on that. It should be an interesting stage for the GC battle nonetheless, especially if Mohoric can put in another stunning performance.

We ended up with an 8 rider breakaway - Kaczmarek, Veyhe, Moshoeshoe, Yzeiraj, Lammertink, Quicibal, Contreras and Sweeck. The Intermediate Sprint would be won by Veyhe, ahead of Moshoeshoe and Contreras.

Over the top of the Cat 2 Col de Montgenevre the breakaway would fracture. Quicibal would lead over Lammertink and Veyhe, with the other 5 riders all between 30 seconds and 3 minutes behind - and the peloton at 4 minutes. Only Moshoeshoe and Yzeiraj would fail to make it back on the descent before the climb to Sestrieres though.

Quicibal was by far the strongest on the climb and he summits it with 62km to go, 1’25 ahead of Contreras and Sweeck, 2’31 ahead of Veyhe and Lammertink, 2’47 ahead of Kaczmarek and 3’47 ahead of Yzeiraj. The peloton is at 4’59 and down to 57 riders, though only sprinters and time trialists have been dropped so far.

Next up was a very long descent, that would shake the race up even further. When the riders hit the bottom of the descent with 19km to go, Contreras, Sweeck and Quicibal were the only remaining breakaway riders - together 1’10 ahead of the Ayubowan lead peloton, Herklotz having 5 teammates remaining in the 51 rider group.

As we headed up the Cote de Pramartino, the race would fracture again - a flurry of attacks were unleashed from the peloton. Halfway up the 7km climb, and the situation is as follows:

Quicibal
Kung +35
Sweeck, Ndayisenga +1’13
Shirota, Contreras, Herklotz, Potocki, Cataford +1’25
Peloton containing all other GC contenders + 1’41

1.5km to the summit, and the picture has changed once again. Kung has pushed and passed a cracking Quicibal (+30), with Kudus trying to bridge (+43) and a strong Herklotz lead group just behind that (+51) featuring Ndayisenga, Shirota, Vasyliv, Mohoric, Carthy and Potocki. The other GC riders remain in the peloton (+1’36), a 32 rider group at this point.

Kung leads over the climb, with 32 seconds of advantage over Kudus and 11.6km to go - all downhill. Herklotz is 10 seconds behind him, before another 25 seconds to the group he was in before - having chosen to strike it out alone.

8km to go and Herklotz has bridged to Kudus, but they both sit 40 seconds behind Kung. The group of 7 behind is 40 seconds down, but a minute ahead of the peloton - with Cataford and Tanovitchii attempting to bridge to it.

4km to go and Kung is ahead by 1’05 - Herklotz and Kudus unwilling to work together, despite it being in their interests to put time into Vasyliv. Indeed, they only have 15 seconds of advantage to what is now a group of 8 - Cataford having bridged.

Kung takes an impressive win! Kudus and Herklotz are sprinting behind, and they look like they may close the gap - his celebration brings him almost to a complete stop.

Herklotz takes 2nd, with Kudus in 3rd - the German dominating the sprint here.

Mohoric sprints to 4th, while Carthy is in 5th - a great result for the young Brit after working for Herklotz all day. Shirota, Potocki, Ndayisenga, Cataford and Vasyliv round out the top 10 - with no time gaps being given as the three groups coalesced in the sprint at the end. 2 minutes is the gap to the other GC riders such as Heymes though.
