Tour of America - Stage 11

Tour of America

Stage 11/21 Billings - Red Lodge 140.2 km

The riders have flown west across USA to Billings, form here the route is heading south west to Red Lodge in Carbon County.

Compared to what we are getting used to a short stage, sort of a breather between the mountain stages and the hard ITT coming up tomorrow. A stage where we could see a breakaway win from one of the many fighters ready to take a challenge, but also a nice option for the sprinters after a few days out of the spotlight.

Two intermediate sprints, Laurel after 25.3 km and Belfry after 91.6 km

One KoM climbs Bear Creek Hill 127.7 km (cat2), 5.7 km at 5.4%, the actual climbing longer as the last 4-5 km leading up to it, also rising 2-3%.

In 2015 the stage was won by Raúl Granjel Cabrera, can he do it again?

The sky is clear with little wind, just up to a light breeze, a lot like we saw it at the eastern states.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio initiates the early breakaway, soon also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Alawi joins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage11/1.jpg

As we have seen lately the breakaway doesn’t care about the intermediate sprint, they just roll over the sprint in Laurel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Alawi in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag.

The breakaway builds up a lead of 5’46 before the peloton react, with about 85 km to the line a group of teams decide to increase the speed, it is mainly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Aeropostal and Telkom’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Janse van Rensburg taking the hardest workload, but also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Porto – Prio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Eritel – Sonatrach takes turns in the pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage11/2.jpg

When the peloton gets to the 2nd intermediate sprint the lead is down to 2’54”, again they just roll over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage11/3.jpg

With 1.5 km to the top of Bear Creek Hill pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag attack, quite logically the much weaker pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Alawi can’t follow this, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio can !!

They got 2’53 over the top.

Result of Bear Creek Hill
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio10points

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Alawi6points

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Janse van Rensburg2points

For a while now and also on the entire climb it has only been pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Janse van Rensburg setting the pace in the peloton, and I guess both his own teammates and other sprinters are happy with the result, because behind the peloton we can see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Van Heerden in serious trouble.

20 km to the line, the breakaway has 1’35

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage11/5.jpg

15 km to the line
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag are now alone in front with 1’27”

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Gonçalves is setting pace in the peloton, 51 km/h at a 1.7% slope, the distance is melting very fast.

Under the 10 km banner the breakaway is basically caught.

3 km to the line

So far we only got one long line of riders in front.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera in his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Benfatto.

Then a tiny gab to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Hoffman and on his right pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho, on his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Martinez.

The other sprinters not connected to any the train, so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage11/7.jpg

2 km to the line
In front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia swings right to make room on his left side for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera

Behind them now 3 separate lines of riders all side by side.

To the left at Granjel Cabrera wheel now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Hoffman, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Altanzul
In the middle pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Benfatto on wheel.

And at the right side, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho, on his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Martinez, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Sonnery and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage11/8.jpg

1.5 km to the line

In front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera on wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Hoffman

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia now almost right in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig, hard to say if that will turn out to be a problem for Selig.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Altanzul now on Selig’s wheel.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Benfatto on Altanzul’s right rear side.

One the right side is still a train pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Martinez. And a little further right pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Sonnery and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla

There are no gabs, so the distances between the mentioned riders are limited.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage11/9.jpg

Under the red kite

First pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Hoffman, almost wheel touch wheel.

Now a gap of 2-3 meters back to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig, another meter to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski side by side.

Behind them at the left side is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Altanzul about 3 meters behind Selig.

Another 4-6 meters back we got pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Martinez, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Sonnery pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Benfatto and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Gaimon

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage11/10.jpg

500 m

Soon after the red kite pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig makes an almost unreal acceleration and quickly sits at pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera left rear side in 2nd position.
A few meters behind Cabrera’s right side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Hoffman side by side with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso who is now done and decelerating.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Altanzul and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski 5-6 meter behind, the latter looking very cooked.

Another 4-5 meter back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Martinez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Sonnery in that order.

At least 8 meters to the next group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage11/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera takes another stage win in Red Lodge, his fourth win in the race so far.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig 2nd in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Hoffman.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho has a great last 500 meters, overtaking Altanzul, and also getting very close to Hoffman.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Altanzul rounds off top 5.
