Tour of America - Stage 10
Tamijo

Tour of America

Stage 10/21 Montpelier - Equinox Mountain 207.9 km.

The Caravan has traveled some 180 km west to Montpelier, Vermont. From here the route moves south into the Green Mountains passing some climbs, before the finish at Equinox Mountain in Green Mountain National Forest.

The stage looks a bit like yesterday, with a hard steep summit finish. The last climb not as long but with a harder climb at Dorset Peak leading up to it, just some 26 fast downhill km before the start of the climb to Mount Equinox. Won’t even mention what devastation a crash here could do to a team.

Two intermediate sprints, Brandon after 102.2 km and Rutland after 133.3 km

Three KoM climbs Dana Hill after 38.0 km, 4.4 km at 4.6% (cat4), Brandon Mountain Road after 90.4 km, 6.3 km at 4.6% (cat3), and Dorset Peak after 173.0 km, 4.8 km at 8.2%.

There are additional 20,14,12,10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1 KoM points at the finish on Equinox Mountain, 7.7 km at 11.7%.

In 2015 the stage was won by Thomas Lövkvist, he is not here.
The sky is clear with little wind, just up to a light breeze.

After just 4 km it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Joeaar and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Magnusson who opens up what is to become a breakaway of 9 riders.

The other are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Christian, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Lemus Davila, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Rodas Ochoa and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag attacks on the climb, but too early. Instead it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Lemus Davila in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo

3’07 to the peloton, 170 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/2.jpg

145 km to the line and quite suddenly on relative flat dry road, we have got a coalition, at first just 2 riders, but taking a lot more with them. Impossible to say how many are injured but all of them continues.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Fothen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Shushemoin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Ochoa Quintero, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Lowe, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Russom, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Kononenko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Briceno, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Atapuma

Unbelievable to see all those down at the same time, and the peloton splits in two with all the riders falling back to help. The will of course soon be back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/3.jpg

2 km to the KoM on Brandon Mountain Road, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo attacks with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina clutched.

Rodriguez Galindo burns up, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina takes it.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Rodas Ochoa 2 nd. and then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag.

4’16 to the peloton with 117 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png In-n-Out p/b Carrefour is leading the peloton and the distance has stabilized around 4’00-4’20.

The breakaway roll over the sprint in Brandon, without fighting for the points, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo first then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Christian and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Magnusson

Then the distance begins to crumble away, at the sprint in Rutland it is down to 3’01”. Again they roll over in a nice line. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Rodas Ochoa, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Lemus Davila.

74.3 km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/5.jpg

The breakaway hit the foot of Dorset Peak with 2’54

Soon the break is split on the steep slopes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Christian and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Magnusson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Joeaar, can’t keep up with the hectic pace.

Further back we also see strong rider I trouble, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Fothen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pirazzi no longer with the favorites.

The group with Christian and Magnusson gets caught.

Result at Dorset Peak:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Lemus Davila10points
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag 8points
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo6points
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina4points
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Rodas Ochoa2points

Peloton 55 riders at 2’51

After the climb the front group is split again, now also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Rodas Ochoa and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Pakthusov have to let go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/6.jpg

7.7 km to the top

When the trio in front reach the foot of the final climb they got 2’08” to the peloton and 56” to Group Rodas Ochoa.

6.4 km to the top

Group Rodas Ochoa is caught, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina has attacked and is now 33” in front of the other two and got 1’25 to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/7.jpg

5.4 km to the top

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano attacks from the peloton, soon getting contact with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Lemus Davila.

4.8 km to the top

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Le Bon has closed the gap, most of the favorites is sitting not far from the front of the peloton.

But the cameras have found pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Ardila Cano and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič, dangerously far back in the peloton

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman sitting in the middle of the peloton, not actually in trouble but time to move forward, before everything falls apart.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina is 52” in front, 49 riders left in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/8.jpg

4.4 km to the top

Over the last 400 meters there has been a huge selection from the back, the favorite group reduced to just 16 riders, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman made the cut.

A new attack form the peloton it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/9.jpg

4.0 km to the top

With an impressive display of determination pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Reguigui close the gap for this captain pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane, in the same move also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina adventure is over, a favorite group of 16 riders are now in front of the race.

Some of those who are here:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ratiy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Hardy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Ochoa Quintero, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/9-5.jpg

3.0 km to the top

Another dramatic development, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis have attack again.

22” behind, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Reguigui, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ratiy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Ochoa Quintero and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina

52” behind a group of 6 with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Peterson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Hardy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Osorio

26 riders further back at 1’35”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/10.jpg

2.0 km to the top

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Reguigui and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane have now closed the gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis, 4 riders lead the race.

At 46”, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ratiy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Ochoa Quintero have been caught by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo, 5 riders in 2nd group.

At 1’27, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Osorio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina

At 1’48 – 2’23 a total of 16 riders in mixed sized groups, the rest more than 3’08 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/11.jpg

1.5 km to the top

3 riders are now in front, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Reguigui is slowly falling behind, no longer able to withstand the hard pace set by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis.

At 53’
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ratiy pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Ochoa Quintero pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo,

At 1’16
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman seems to lose time fast. Paying the price for helping the better placed teammate John-Lee Augustyn.

At 1’57 now a larger group of 5 riders.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Osorio, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Belgasem, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Peterson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/12.jpg

Under the red kite

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis still leading the first group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane clued. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano also there looking fine.

At 30” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Reguigui having a hard time after fighting for his captain all day.

At 49”
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ratiy pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo

At 1’11 now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Ochoa Quintero alone.

At 1’32 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman

Everyone else at 2’24 or more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/13.jpg

400 meters

The trio still together in front.

At 41’ pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ratiy pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo is closing in slowly and they have caught pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Reguigui

At 1’07 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Ochoa Quintero also gaining a little on the front group, they may by going to tactical now, or boiling I bit.

At 1’44 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman

At 2’49 Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič, still 5 riders, the next group close to 4 minutes behind.

Closing in on the finish line pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis raise his arms in celebration, sure he won’t miss this one and he wins on Equinox Mountain, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano 2nd in the same time.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane can’t keep up on the last few 100 meters, he comes in third losing 18”, but surely ok with that as he takes over the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage10/14.jpg

In the next group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ratiy is clearly the strongest on the last 400 m, gaining 16 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn who rounds of top 5.

Current Blue Jersey holder pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo was not having a feast. He comes last in what was the 2nd group, losing 1’11.
