The first stage in the high mountains today. Will Kudus have recovered from his crashes after his awful last two days, and can Herklotz and Vasyliv threaten Mohoricâ€™s GC lead on their favoured terrain?

We start the day with the climb of the Col du Galibier, and as we reach the summit the race has exploded - only 12 riders remain in the front group with 142 km to go! Potocki, Shirota, Ndayisenga, Carthy, Ranaweera, Kudus, Heymes, Herklotz, Mohoric, Kung, Vasyliv and Moscon the names. Ayubowan, Meiji and Kenya set a frantic pace going up the climb and this is the result. Cataford is already at 37 seconds, Tanovitchii at 1â€™25, Ludvigsoon at 3â€™14, Enger at 3â€™48 and Benito at 5â€™57. Shirota would lead over the climb ahead of Ndayisenga and Carthy.

The long descent would however cancel out a lot of this advantage, and so at the sprint with 88km to go the peloton contained 48 riders - Shirota leading over Potocki and Shrestha. However, the sprint also marked the start of the Col de la Madeleineâ€¦

Again, Meiji and Ayubowan push the pace alongside Isostar - and at the summit this time the group is thinned out again, though this time only to 22 riders. Shirota would lead over Potocki and Heymes, with Benito, Mamykin and Ludvigsson the most notable names missing. But would this group push on this time?

The answer would be no, not really. However the flat section before La Plagne would see a breakaway form - Herrera, Mayho and Wurtz present. None of them were huge threats, and at the foot of the climb they had an of 1 minute to Benito, who was trying to bridge, and 1â€™30 to the main group of 23 riders.

Indeed, their attempt would be doomed and with 15km to go (all uphill) the front group of 22 would be back together again, containing all the big GC favourites. Meiji and Kenya seemed content to ride tempo, with Ayubowan and Isostar waiting in the wings. With 10km to go, a group of 19 remained - Potocki, Shirota, Mohoric, Ndayisenga, Kudus, Heymes, Herklotz, Vasyliv, Carthy, Kung, Moscon, Mayho, Ranaweera, Cataford, De Leon, Rybalkin, Herrera, Godoy and DeVos.

This would all change in the next kilometre though, as many riders cracked - De Leon, Ranaweera, Cataford, Rybalkin and Herrera in one group about 45 seconds back, De Vos and Godoy at 1 minute. Tanovitchii sat further back at 1â€™20, but looking like he was recovering. His 2nd place on GC looked to be lost though.

Carthy would lose contact next, followed by Heymes, Mayho, Moscon and Kung. And that would be the signal for Kudus to attack! Vasyliv and Herklotz reacted quickest, with Mohoric trying to follow but struggling to hang on.

With 5km to go, the race situation is as follows:

Kudus would continue to stretch his advantage, while with 3.5km to go Ndayisenga managed to bridge to a visibly cracking Mohoric - now 2 minutes down on Kudus. Herklotz and Vasyliv remain at 45 seconds, but seem unable to close the gap.

With 1.5km to go itâ€™s clear that Kudus has this in the bag. He has 1â€™10 to his two chasers, with Ndayisenga at 2â€™50. Mohoric has exploded and is 3 minutes behind, while the group of 6 that Ndayisenga left are at 3â€™25.

And Kudus takes the win! After an awful couple of days, what a way to bounce back and to put himself back into GC contention.

Vasyliv would take second ahead of Herklotz - the two of them finishing 1â€™25 behind, with Herklotz taking the GC lead 2 seconds ahead of Vasyliv, and 18 seconds ahead of Kudus.

Ndayisenga would take an impressive 4th after working for Kudus all day, losing 4â€™07 in the end however.

Mohoric rode bravely to take 5th, but heâ€™ll lose the GC lead (4â€™54 down) - having almost being caught by the group of 6 at the end lead by Shirota (5â€™12 down for him and Potocki, the others at 5â€™27), with Carthy the next rider on the road after them finishing in 12th but 5â€™55 down on the day.
