Tour of America

Stage 8/21 Greenfield - Concord 187.1 km

The caravan has moved about 65 km east to Greenfield, Massachusetts, from here we are heading northeast to Concord, New Hampshire.

We got a sprinter friendly route with just a single climb about 1/3 into the stage, but after some hard day also a possibility for a breakaway win.

Two intermediate sprints, Keene after 61.2 km and Hillsboro after 123.5 km

One KoM climbs at Hurricane Hill after 73.1 km (cat3)

In 2015 the stage was won by Raúl Granjel Cabrera.
It is sunny with very little wind.

A breakaway is established right from the start, it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Andriafenomananiaina, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Appleby, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Schultz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Posthuma, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Perry and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Orue

Appleby best placed in GC 50th at 14’43 and Egidio best placed in the KoM as 12th with 11 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/1.jpg

The peloton is led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Telkom for Africa, in a relaxed pace, the break building up a led fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/2.jpg

The break gets to the first intermediate sprint with a lead of 5’15, working together nicely and rolling over the sprint united.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Posthuma in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Appleby and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/3.jpg

Shortly after on the KoM sprint things are different, from 2km pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio attacks, he doesn’t really get a gap, but hold out enough to finish first, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Appleby and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Posthuma.

The lead is 5’56

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/4.jpg

From the peloton at the start of the climb pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Teklit has a puncture he needs to close 1’50.

The distance grows to just under 7 minutes, when a coalition of teams start to share the workload in front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Aeropostal, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Porto-Prio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Eritel-Sonatrach leads the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/5.jpg

The breakaway gets to the last intermediate sprint with the distance is 3’28, 63 km to go.
Again they pass sitting firmly in their paceline taking turns. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Orue first then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Posthuma

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Benfatto has a puncture, with the pace we got now he will be struggling to get back.

15.4 km to the finish pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Betilson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Anguilet collide both thrown to the ground, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Barclay, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano ride straight into the crash, they are also down. This may be the end of Rujano’s CG although they all get back in the race.

10 km left, distance 1’07, group Rujano 2’36 behind the peloton
5 km left, distance 52”, group Rujano 3’20 behind the peloton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/9.jpg

3 km left

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio first, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Appleby just 16” behind him.

At 24” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Perry pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Schultz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Posthuma

At 36” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Orue and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Andriafenomananiaina,

At 49” the peloton, group Rujano at 4’23

Two trains are forming:
In front to the right, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera by his side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso, right on Granjel Cabrera’s wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Sutton.

To the left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Gebrezgabihier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Afewerki leading for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Van Heerden, on his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Giacoppo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Sonnery, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig.

A bit further back we can see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla not too far behind Selig

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/10.jpg

1.5 km left
Now only to rider in front of the peloton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Appleby, they have 32 seconds.

The Aeropostal train seems to have gained a little more distance to Eritel.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia still first now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso on wheel, leading for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Sutton on his right side.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Gebrezgabihier swung off, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Afewerki leading for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Van Heerden, the riders behind him still the same, but now also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla at the rear end of the train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/11.jpg

Under the red kite

In front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Appleby, with 29 seconds to the peloton, will that be enough?

Behind them at the right side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso seems to have blown up, now just pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia leading for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Sutton a bit further back.

In the middle of the road, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Afewerki has started the sprint for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Van Heerden, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Giacoppo behind him.

In a new line of their own to the left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Sonnery, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/12.jpg

500 m

First pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Appleby, but they won’t make it, now only 5-10 meters in front.

Behind them left of the middle a very fast pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Van Heerden about to pass his lead-out, behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Sonnery, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig clutche.

On their left also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla coming fast.

To the right of Selig pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia.

Trailing about 4 meters behind Selig, from left to right pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Giacoppo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Sutton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/13.jpg

300 m

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Van Heerden is now side by side with the breakaway. Beside that the situation is almost the same, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera seems a bit blown, falling a little further back.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Van Heerden wins the stage in Concord.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage8/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski a very close 2nd in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Sonnery.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla and then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig rounds of top 5.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png José Rujano lost 5'19, very surprising that Aeropostal Venezuela did not send riders back to help their top climber.
