Tour of America - Stage 7

Tour of America

Stage 7/21 Kingston - Mount Greylock 175.4 km

The Tour busses have traveled 75 km east back to Kingston, New York. Today we are heading north east for Mount Greylock, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, part of the Taconic Mountains.

The route is flat at first, but on the last third we got two peaks before a hard summit finish at Greylock, a stage suited only for the top climbers. We may expect another major change to the GC after this one.

We got three intermediate sprints, Saugerties after 18.7 km, Albany after 88.3 km and finally Williamstown (Massachusetts) after 153.9 km, just 6.5 km before the final climb starts.

Two KoM climbs:
Dunham Reservoir after 118.7 km, (cat4)
Mount Raimer after 141.5 km, 5.4 km at 6.7% (cat2)

There are additional 16,12,10,8,6,4,2 KoM points at the finish on Mount Greylock, 13.8 km at 5.5% the mid-section a lot harder the first, and especially the last section, with a 4km false flat up to the finish line.

In 2015 the stage was won by Natnael Berhane.
It is partly clouded; the riders will have a fresh to strong breeze right in the face all day.

We see the usual suspects pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Magnusson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Christian attempt to get in different breakaways but the peloton reel everything back and get to the first intermediate sprint with no one in front.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Christian wins in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Ardila Cano

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/1.jpg

Other attacks are also reeled back providing for an unusual hard morning, but eventually after some 40 km, we get a breakaway that seems be allowed to stay in front.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Dahlberg, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Gebrezgabihier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Perry, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nitu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Hung

Hung best placed in GC as 44th, 5’27 after, Clifford best in KoM as 6th with 10 points, a breakaway that should not pose a threat to anyone.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/2.jpg

The peloton is led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Team Telkom for Africa, and even though the breakaway may not seem to be a threat, they keep up a good pace. So far the breakaway haven’t got beyond a distance of 2’30. The headwind doesn’t make things easier for the breakaway either.
100 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/3.jpg

The breakaway is working together quite well, everybody taking their turns, and just passes the sprint in Albany without fighting. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Perry in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Dahlberg and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford.

The distance is 2’28 with 87 km to the line

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/4.jpg

The breakaway gets to the first KoM. From 1.5 km pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince attack, not a great idea as he burn out to early. In the back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Perry struggles and has to let go.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Hung wins in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nitu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford

The distance is 3’04 with 56 km to the line

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/5.jpg

On the 2nd and much harder climb pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nitu attacks early. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Perry and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford lose contact. The peloton is coming closer starting to swallow the breakaway riders falling behind.

The distance between Nitu and the peloton is 1’43 when he passes the top.

Result of Mount Raimer:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nitu 10points
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Dahlberg8points
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag6points
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Hung4points
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince2points

After the climb we got 3 riders in front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nitu pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Dahlberg and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag

But we also get a dangerous attack from the peloton, race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Stetina and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Russom building up a gab of 34 seconds very fast.
All the other important riders are in the peloton (62 riders)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/7.jpg

Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn gets caught when the descent flattens out and the peloton also get close to the 3 riders in front.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nitu wins the intermediate sprint in Williamstown in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Dahlberg and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag
Right after the sprint pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Dahlberg attempts to extend the breakaway with a final attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/8.jpg

That was off course a waste, Dahlberg boils over and gets swallowed, and a bit later the break is over.
Team Telkom for Africa has set up a terrifying lead with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ratiy and then race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn

8 km to the top, the peloton is down to 41 riders.

The cameras have spotted pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Camargo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Hardy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Le Bon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Baltazar, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Ardila Cano and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Anguilet no longer with the favorite group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/9.jpg

4,5 km to the top, the peloton is down to 30 riders.

The first attack from the favorite group at Mount Greylock, it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn react fast and get contact, with 4 km to the top the group has 28” to the peloton.

The hardest part of the climb is over, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič on paper the best sprinter on a relative flat finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/11.jpg

2,0 km to the top
The distance is 36”, in the back of the 2nd group now 21 riders, we see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Fothen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ratiy definitely not looking good.

Under the red kite
The distance is 48”, first under is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman, but all five together still looking fine.

Behind them the pursuit is led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Lowe into front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/12.jpg

500 m to the line

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo starts the sprint, right behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman stares down on the tarmac, he is in pain. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn looking good passing Eastman on his left side, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano and lastpcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage7/13.jpg

300 m left

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn is moving in on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo but is it enough?

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman won’t hold 3nd pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano moving in on him fast, but will he hold 4th?

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Domenico Pozzovivo wins on Mount Greylock, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn, who will most likely be happy with the result, as he holds on to the race lead with a nice margin.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Rujano took the last podium in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman, who managed to get to the line without time loss even though he was not feeling well in the end.

Last year’s winner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Natnael Berhane will have to settle with 6th losing 40”. Was this a signal that he is not where he was last year, or just a one-off? Only time will tell.
